Healthy luggage is providing equally healthy returns for Hang Wang (HK) Enterprise Ltd, which was established in 1988 by chairman David Lau and managing director Panny Liu as a small retail store specialising in luggage and bags.
Today the company has expanded into a successful producer of cutting-edge luggage and bags, employing some 300 personnel producing 30,000 items per month at a factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.
"In this industry, it is important to keep up-to-date with current trends in order to maintain a competitive advantage in the marketplace, so Hang Wang has developed a 'health-orientated' range of designs," says Liu.
The new range caters to the increasing popularity of outdoor activities among people who are conscious of what they wear and carry, even when engaging in physically challenging pursuits.
New ergonomic designs featuring contoured shoulder and hip straps redistribute the weight of the sports bag, so that less stress will be placed on the carrier's back, arms and shoulders when travelling.
The growing popularity of outdoor sports, recreation and adventure travel has also inspired Hang Wang to develop specialty luggage products that add convenience, comfort and utility to the sports travel experience.
These sports ranges are characterised by a mixture of colours and fabric weaves, and feature various compartments to minimise clutter and maximise functionality.
The company's specialised team also develops promotional gifts and premiums, and applies its creative concepts to all kinds of bags and luggage.
Hang Wang produces a range for business executives that includes briefcases and pilot cases with trolleys.
The company has also launched its own Emcora brand, which features a wide range of leather bag and luggage items.
"Our in-house designers study other product ranges, then design items for the Emcora range incorporating what we regard as the leading features from what we have seen," Liu explains.
With main markets in Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia, the diversity of products produced by Hang Wang has broad appeal, contributing further to the company's success and future development.
"Competition on the Chinese mainland is intense," says Liu.
"We have to create something unique and different in order to maintain our brand image, which is our major asset, in the current economic climate.
"We place great emphasis on the relationships we have with our customers and listen to what they regard as future trends in the marketplace."
Liu says the company's ranges are expanding to include executive cases, professional sports bags and lightweight luggage, as well some additional matching ensemble items.
Hang Wang is also targeting new markets for its range of leather bag and luggage products, and is currently promoting the Emcora range in the UK and other European countries.
