Travel & Leisure Bags
Trolley bags such as this 600D polyester trolley backpack are steady sellers worldwide for Kam Yuen Industrial (Int'l) Co Ltd
Whether packing for travel or leisure, today's consumers are looking for holdalls that not only carry their miscellaneous items but also reflect their individual sense of style.
Savvy Hong Kong bag manufacturer Grand Bag Centre Co Ltd has recognised this desire with its stated aim to make all manner of bags "at the best quality and at a reasonable price".
"The low-end niche is covered by Chinese mainland manufacturers, so we choose to offer medium-range goods with new materials and new designs, as well as selling services to brand name products," explains manager Mimi Chung.
As a result, 80% of the 1981-established business is OEM production for brand names while 20% is ODM, manufactured under its own Surprise and RV Sportage brands.
Typical of Grand Bag's design sense is the youthful Surprise Revolution range featuring PVC that resembles distressed leather, a popular look from last season that Chung says is set to extend into this year.
"The range features a die-cut logo combined with stitching to offer something different," she says. "It is a very good seller, and we have had a lot of repeat orders."
Two unfussy shoulder bag styles, models GC-8880A and GC-8767B, have proved popular with both men (who prefer black and chocolate brown) and women (who can choose from beige, pink and burgundy), while the GC-9224B ladies’ shoulder bag with belt buckle details has also been a good seller.
Designed to hold an A4-sized folder and selling for US$4-5 FOB Hong Kong each, they are available in minimum order quantities of 800 bags per style with 2-3 colour combinations delivered 45-60 days after receipt of an L/C.
Another cotton canvas and checked fabric postman's bag, with a pigment wash effect for a casual look that comes in army-green, khaki and brown shades, has also been walking off the production line.
Grand Bag's factory in Dongguan on the mainland has 450 workers who produce an average of 100,000 bags per month for markets in Europe, South America, Australia, Indonesia, the Middle East, Singapore and Japan.
Also aiming for the mid-price travel and leisure bracket is 1995-established Will-Power Industrial (HK) Co Ltd, 20% of whose output consists of handbags, shopping bags, backpacks and wallets.
Its sporting bags in durable 600D polyester featuring a basketball badge have proved a hit, according to sales manager and collection designer Lo Wan Wai. "We have sold 30,000 bags in this style to the UK market alone during the past year," she says.
Model P-2131 is 73cm long, 32cm wide and 35cm high, roomy enough to hold a basketball as well as shoes, clothes and a towel, and unit-priced at US$5-6 FOB Hong Kong.
Other popular styles include model P-2128, a US$4-5 backpack with a net fabric pocket for holding a basketball and a water-bottle holder, and the model 2125 drawstring bag made of 600D polyester and net fabric that costs US$1-2 each.
A minimum order is 500 bags per style in any colour, delivered in 45-60 days from a 300-worker factory in Weizhou City in Guangdong Province to Italy, the Czech Republic, France and Germany.
Europe is also the chief market for Kam Yuen Industrial (Int’l) Co Ltd, whose competitively-priced travel trolley bags have become its main product line.
The firm has been making travel bags, backpacks, school bags, shopping bags and cosmetic bags for the low- to mid-range market since late 2003.
"We were previously in the plastics business, so we can make the plastic trolleys at a competitive price," claims sales representative Diana Chan. "We gain many orders for our trolley bags, such as our new model 0450008."
This cabin-sized trolley bag, featuring a main compartment and a smaller front pocket, sells for about US$10 FOB Hong Kong each and is made of 600D polyester, although Chan notes it can be produced in any material or size the customer requests.
"Brown-and-black and plain black are the most popular colours, but we have made this model with a colourful pattern on the front panel," she explains. "We can also offer embroidery, but if that is too expensive we advise the customer to go for printing."
The firm works to OEM terms for clients ranging from Disney to medium-sized European brand houses, either providing finished designs or working with customers’ ideas.
"Most of our customers come from Europe, where the order quantity is not as huge as the US," Chan adds.
Minimum orders are 1,000 pieces per style and colour delivered in 45-50 days to major European markets including the UK, the US and Malaysia, using materials such as nylon, PVC and PU sourced chiefly from the mainland.
"We offer competitive prices," Chan stresses, adding that production takes place at an 8,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.
With their wide diversity of styles and functions, it seems that Hong Kong-made travel and leisure bags are great gear at prices that buyers worldwide can happily afford.
