Grand Supersac Co Ltd
These stylish backpacks are just part of the huge and ever-expanding range of bags manufactured by Grand Supersac Co Ltd in a variety of materials including canvas, denim, nylon, polyester, leather and PVC
Grand Supersac manufactures and exports backpacks, travel bags, ladies' bags, briefcases, wallets, waist bags, tote bags and shoulder bags. It also keeps extending its range, although backpacks, an area in which Grand Supersac is an acknowledged specialist, still account for more than half of its business.
"We work with many materials - including canvas, denim, nylon, polyester, leather and PVC," says Lee. "We make our bags under our own or customers' brand names, but either way they are generally based on our own designs - although of course we work with customers to produce the bags they want."
Those customers make an impressive list: Remuar, Lee Cooper and Disney are just a few of the quality-conscious household names with which Grand Supersac does significant volumes of business.
"Big brand names demand high quality and they are always looking for good factories," Lee explains. "Style is very important - we have to keep creating new ranges, with new products coming on line monthly otherwise customers lose interest. We also have to be versatile."
That style is sharply contemporary: for example one range of fashion bags is printed with sporting images to reflect both the lifestyles of the ladies who carry them and the company's own sporty style. Two to three new ranges are introduced each month.
FOB Hong Kong prices for Grand Supersac products start at around US$1.10 for a simple pencil case, and rise according to the quality of the material and the complexity of the bag.
The company's factory in Zhongshan on the Chinese mainland now produces more than 250,000 bags each month. "Our market range is medium to high end, so we're always looking for new ideas and lighter, stronger, materials," Lee explains. "We also insist on durable, reliable zippers - these are fashion items but they must be built to last."
Lee and his team are working aggressively on the mainland to increase production through investment in training and new technology. Internationally they are channelling their energies into building business for the company, which has traditionally done well in Europe but is now looking further afield.
"We also do very well in Turkey, Chile and the Philippines, while Mexico is becoming a very important market for us too," Lee notes. "About half of our production is under the Grand Supersac brand name and about half is customer brand business."
He stresses that he pays close attention to fashion with regard to both style and function. The trend towards bags with wheels and retractable handles, for example, has influenced him profoundly. "One very popular line at the moment is the trolley schoolbag, which makes life easier for kids with heavy books to carry," Lee says.
Grand Supersac also gives a lot of thought to colour. "Young people like sharp colours, but different colours and patterns go well in different markets - fancy colours are very popular in Europe now," Lee notes.
Whatever the trends may be, Grand Supersac is generally one step ahead, and although its OEM business is highly successful Lee wants to see his company's logo enjoy the same prominence as some of the others carried by the products he and his team design and manufacture.
It's early days yet, but that is the Grand design.
