Back In Fashion

Working women can take this elegant range of backpacks from Wah Shing Hong Ltd to the office

Backpacks have been turned into a fashion statement by the younger generation, who have developed a whole new concept of stylish, elegant rucksacks. And, as befits a manufacturing centre famous for its quality travel accessories, Hong Kong scores top with the production of trendy backpacks in innovative fabrics for both men and women.

"Our designs come from all over the world and are inspired by our trips overseas," says Yick Fung Leatherware Fty Ltd manager Joanna Chung. "Our backpack designs are fashionable, but not too trendy. We do not make anything too extreme in style because it would not last."

The family firm was established by Chung's parents in 1987 and today makes bags in PVC, PU, cotton canvas and leather. "Cotton canvas is currently very popular," notes Chung.

She says Yick Fung's fabrics come from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Korea. "Our best export markets are Europe, the US, Taiwan, Japan and South Africa," Chung reveals. "We produce entirely for export and sales figures have gone up this year."

Yick Fung's 8,100-square-metre factory employing 370 workers in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland produces 120,000 pieces a month. Minimum order size is 500 items delivered 50 days after confirmation. FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$2.50-5.00 for PVC items and nylon and US$6-10 for leather backpacks.

Similarly wide-ranging is the collection offered by One Price Trading Co Ltd. "We make a line of vintage rucksacks for ladies that are designed by our in-house designer," says sales manager Tony So.

He insists One Price doesn't copy international styles, it creates its own. "Women like to have elegant small rucksacks," So believes. "We make special cases for mobile phones, but put them in a safe place close to the wearer."

So emphasises the company's new fabrics. "We have a supplier in Korea who develops them for us," he explains. "Our latest is a new type of PVC which has a shiny appearance, rather like patent leather."

Established in 1967, One Price produces a wide range of bags and accessories under its Pony brand name at a 100,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan that employs 500 workers.

Monthly production is more than 80,000 items and the minimum order is 120 pieces per style and 600 pieces per order delivered 30-40 days after order confirmation. "FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$5-8 according to the design," says So. Key target markets, he says, are Europe and North America because customers are willing to pay a higher price for good quality and elegant styling. "We are optimistic about the future," So adds.

Backpacks may be targeted primarily at youngsters but Grand Bag Centre Co Ltd is aiming higher. "We are doing a special line in backpacks for adults," explains manager Mimi Chung. "We put pockets on the inside for mobile phones and our styles and fabrics are new."

Chung says sales have gone up recently and are really booming, especially in Australia and the Philippines. "We make a backpack of mini-check polyester which comes from the mainland and is very trendy, and another consisting of a new fabric from Taiwan called hexapoly, which is light and strong."

Grand Bag was established in 1981 and produces approximately 100,000 pieces per month at a Dongguan plant that has 300 sewing machines and 450 workers.

Its rugged bags, which appear under the Surprise and RV Sportage brand names, cost US$3-4 per piece FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 800 pieces in any style with 2-3 colour combinations, delivered 45-60 days after receipt of a letter of credit.

Famous names such as Samsonite, BD&A and Sanrio have been turning to Nam Wah Travel Products Mfy Ltd for their backpacks since 1970. "Our sales have remained stable because we are dealing with long-term customers who have dealt with us for many years," claims sales manager Poly Chan.

The company makes school and sports bags, travel bags, rucksacks, briefcases and garment bags to customer designs and specifications. "We follow fashion trends only if our customers require it," Chan adds. "These days, we find that clients want many new features in their backpacks, which have become important fashion accessories."

Nam Wah produces more than 300,000 bags per month at a 90,000-square-foot factory in Ping Hu, Shenzhen, on the mainland, which employs more than 900 workers.

The company's nylon, polyester, PVC, leather and cotton canvas bags sell for an average of US$6 per bag FOB Hong Kong for minimum orders of 1,000 pieces in any style delivered 50-75 days after order confirmation. "We make entirely for export and our major markets are Europe, the US and Japan," adds Chan.

The message is plain - buyers wanting to back the latest trends should head to Hong Kong and bag lots of orders for highly popular fashion backpacks.
