Cosmos Footwear Mfg Co's bright, funky designs are a big hit with trendy kids of all ages

Colourful, fashionable and functional. Hong Kong leisure shoes are made for more than just walking, and that's just what they'll do if resourceful local manufacturers have their way.

For instance Cosmos Footwear Mfg Co, founded in 1989, makes sports, casual and canvas footwear for men and women as well as leather, hiking and children's shoes. Sales director Andy Chan says many of the shoe designs are based on the classic American baseball shoe style and come in a wide variety of colours. "We use a special method to make them," says Chan. "The outsoles are moulded to the upper."

Cosmos is unique in that it has one factory in Hong Kong and another in Fujian on the Chinese mainland. Chan says having a manufacturing base in the SAR gives the company a distinct advantage over its competitors who only make their shoes on the mainland. "A Hong Kong certificate of origin is an advantage at the present time," he says. "There is no need for our customers to be worried about import quotas."

Hong Kong has been a member of the WTO for more than a decade, and therefore avoids quota restrictions to valuable markets like the EU. The mainland has recently been granted entry to the WTO and will be able to avoid import quotas after 2005, "but right now it's an advantage" according to Chan.

Children's canvas sneakers sell for US$2.20 FOB Hong Kong per pair, and children's canvas slippers cost US$2.00 per pair. Ladies' canvas sneakers are priced at US$2.80 per pair, while girls' sateen sneakers sell for US$2.20 per pair.

Cosmos produces 30,000 pairs a month in Hong Kong, and 100,000 pairs on the mainland. The minimum order is 500 pairs and delivery time after order confirmation is 45 days.

Evermax Industrial Ltd was founded just four years ago but already has a wide global market, exporting to Europe, the US, South America and South Africa among other destinations. "Where there are customers we will find the business," says Evermax manager Sarah Li.

The company makes sports and casual shoes as well as sandals. Men's sport shoes are priced "at around US$4.50 FOB Hong Kong for each pair," Li says.

Evermax's factory in Fujian Province on the mainland employs 450 people and produces 120,000 pairs monthly. Minimum order is 1,200 pairs per size range with two colours and delivery time is within one month of confirmation of order.

Jumbo Holdings Development Ltd has been producing a wide variety of footwear products since 1986, specialising in vulcanised shoes, athletic shoes and outsoles. Sales representative Ruby Chau claims the company's manufacturing facility in Qingdao is the largest shoe factory on the mainland, employing 3,000 workers. "The size of the plant means we can offer our customers a wider variety of products than our competitors," she adds.

The Jumbo plant, which was awarded an ISO 9001 certificate in July 1995, produces footwear made from PU, leather, mesh and canvas from Korea and Taiwan. "And it's available in many, many colours," Chau adds.

Vulcanised shoes such as the classic baseball style with flames printed across the side sell for US$2.63 FOB Hong Kong per pair. Ladies' shoes designed with a chunky outsole are priced at US$2.79 per pair, while a model with a denim-style finish costs US$2.48 per pair.

Minimum order is 2,000 pairs for each colour and style, and delivery time is 45 days. Jumbo's main markets include Europe, North America, Japan and the Middle East.

Salland Enterprises Ltd was established in 1993, though its owner has more than 20 years' experience in shoe manufacturing on the mainland. The company specialises in fabric, vulcanised and injected shoes for adults and children of both sexes, which it distributes in the US, Canada, South America and Australia.

Ladies' footwear such as canvas upper, rubber outsole models sell for US$2.60 per pair FOB Hong Kong, while other vulcanised women's designs cost US$2.75 per pair. They are available in a wide variety of colours with a minimum order of 2,400 pairs per style, delivered in 60 days.

Salland manager Tairy Chan says the company always seeks to maintain competitive pricing and prompt delivery times. "Product enquiries and customer designs are always welcome," Chan adds.
