Evening Bags(HKTDC Fashion - Leather Goods & Bags, Vol 03,2005)
For example, dressy aluminium metal mesh bags are a specialty of Kau Hing Handbag Fty Ltd, which has been producing handmade metallic handbags and shoulder bags since 1983.
"We can make bags in any colour, but the most popular are black, gold, silver and bronze," says sales manager Ben Lee, noting that the bags include a nylon interior shell with a zippered pocket and a mobile phone pouch.
Kau Hing, which imports aluminium metal mesh from the Chinese mainland, also offers equally distinctive evening bags made of printed brass mesh and aluminium ball mesh.
The OEM firm's 350 workers at its 2,500-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the southern mainland produce 100,000 evening bags per month, along with an equal amount of casual bags in PVC and nylon.
The aluminium metal mesh bags sell for US$6-10 per piece FOB Hong Kong for minimum orders of 1,000 units, delivered 40-60 days after order confirmation.
Japan, the US and the UK are Kau Hing's main export markets. "Japan usually wants more style and decoration on the bags, while the UK is more classic and the US more casual," Lee says, adding that large bags are in demand this year, as well as clutches that can be tucked under an arm. "Sales have risen 20% over the past year."
Japan and the US are equally important markets for Wise Lead Int'l Handbag Ltd, which also numbers Europe and Australia among the 60 countries on its export list. "We have classic bags, trendy bags, shoulder bags and handbags to please every taste and style," claims manager Anna Wong.
She notes that 70% of the two million bags Wise Lead manufactures annually are evening bags made of satin and fashion fabrics, with the remainder consisting of fashion day bags, cosmetic bags and backpacks. "Feathers have also been popular this year, especially peacock feathers," Wong reveals. "There's also more demand for bigger bags."
Wise Lead, which has its own Milami brand, divides its production equally between OEM and ODM orders and has a team of US-based designers.
The medium- to high-end bags featuring satin linings and a zippered pocket are priced from US$2-20 per piece FOB the mainland for minimum orders of 150 pieces per colour per style, delivered 40-45 days after order confirmation.
Wise Lead plans to launch matching shoes for its evening bags this month at its factory in Guangzhou on the southern mainland. "They will be made of leather or PVC," says Wong.
Using a more unusual material is Chung Shing Lucite Handbag & Metal Fty Ltd, whose lucite bags account for about one-third of the 60,000 bags the company produces monthly.
"Lucite is a special, unique material that we make so that it looks like mother-of-pearl," says sales manager Shirley Chan. "We can make any colour."
Chung Shing has been producing bags made of the acrylic-based material since it was founded in 1965. "We do mostly clutch and box bags in square, round and rectangular shapes," she adds, noting that PVC and fabric handbags make up the rest of its output.
The lucite evening bags sell for US$5-15 per piece FOB Hong Kong, while the PVC and tweed, satin, polyester and cotton fabric versions cost US$3-7 each.
Minimum order is 200 pieces per style and 1,000 pieces per shipment, delivered 30-60 days after order confirmation to markets including the US, Spain, Panama, the UK, Mexico, Japan and Malaysia.
Another company that makes use of an unusual material is Hoi Fat Handbag Fty, whose optical fibre evening bags feature tiny pinpoints of light embedded in the surface of its polyester, satin, PVC or nylon bags. "The LED lights stay on or flash, and we can have both effects on the same bag," says manager Chung Chun Kiu.
The 20-year-old company began making the optical fibre bags a year ago and is currently producing up to 50,000 assorted bags per month at its 1,800-square-metre factory in Shenzhen. "We saw some Christmas tree lights and we found a supplier who could use the same technique on our bags," Chung recalls, adding that the optical fibre demands the bags be made of soft materials.
The US is Hoi Fat's biggest customer, but the firm hopes demand will expand to other countries as popularity grows. "It's a good gift or premium item for the holidays, and it can also be used as a novelty with a company's logo," Chung maintains.
The eye-catching optical fibre bag is priced at US$1.50-2.50 per piece FOB Hong Kong for minimum orders of 1,000 units delivered 45-60 days after order confirmation, and comes supplied with batteries.
Illustrating yet again that consumers worldwide can count on Hong Kong manufacturers coming up with dazzling evening bags that meet every fashion need.
