Evening Bags(HKTDC Fashion - Leather Goods & Bags, Vol 02,2006)
|Intricate beading and embroidery are widely used by Yue Fung Industrial Co to highlight the designs and fine workmanship of its velvet or satin evening bags|
Every woman knows that an attractive, stylish evening bag complements the perfect party dress or elegant gown, and Hong Kong companies are masters at producing a wide variety of styles to suit all tastes.
Take Tung Hing Worldwide Ltd's cream-coloured, pleated, polyester satin clutch with its sprinkling of crystal beads, which was introduced just six months ago and has quickly become a favourite in Japan, Western Europe and the US.
The US$13 FOB Hong Kong bag features a satin lining, is roomy enough for a mobile phone, make-up and keys and also has a small inside pocket for a mirror, says Tung Hing manager Frankie Li.
"We can produce any colour the customer wants but cream matches a lot of outfits that women wear," he explains. "Other colours in demand are black, white and pink, but we find that people don't want bright colours."
The six-year-old firm's 10,500-square-foot, 120-worker factory in Chaozhou on the Chinese mainland is known for producing high-quality evening handbags and scarves.
Evening bags, many of which bear Elle, Espie or OZOC brands, account for about 50% of the 100,000 items Tung Hing produces each month for markets worldwide.
"We have over 500 handbag models and try to keep our designs up-to-the-minute," says Li, adding that Tung Hing's materials include beads, sequins, polyester satin, silk and accessories from Hong Kong and the mainland.
Unit prices range from US$8-16 FOB Hong Kong, with a minimum order requirement of 100 pieces per colour and a delivery time of 40 days after order confirmation.
Taking a more traditional approach is Wing Shing Enterprise Int'l Co Ltd, which specialises in the rich texture and high-quality appeal of brocade evening bags.
For example, the company's soft and generously-sized model LS306VTO8 brocade evening bag costs US$6 FOB Hong Kong, can be ordered in three sizes and features a metal chain handle in handbag or shoulder-bag lengths.
The 23-year-old company manufactures 150,000 handbags per month using brass, genuine leather, PU, PVC, fabrics and other materials from Japan, the mainland and South Korea. "Fabric bags, such as brocade and satin, sell very well, and so do our frame bags and clutches," says merchandiser Karen Wong.
Evening bags represent about 50% of the OEM/ODM firm's total production, with fashion bags taking up the remainder. "About 10% of bags carry our Cawen's brand name," Wong adds.
Wing Shing's bags are manufactured at an 80,000-square-foot, 600-worker mainland factory in Dongguan for export to the US, Europe, East Asia, Japan, Taiwan and the Middle East.
Prices range up to US$10 per piece FOB Hong Kong for brass bags and up to US$100-200 per piece FOB Hong Kong for evening bags decorated with Swarovski crystals. "Minimum order value is US$5,000, delivered 30-45 days after order confirmation," Wong says.
Perennially popular solid brass evening bags from Polly Mfg Co are typically micron-plated in gold or silver colours and sold in the US, Europe and the United Arab Emirates.
The company's best-selling bag, priced at US$14.50 FOB Hong Kong, is oval-shaped and features a rich velvet lining with a rhinestone clasp. "It has a different look and people like it," claims manager Howard To.
Founded in 1994, Polly sources brass from Japan and rhinestones from Austria for processing at a 150-worker factory in Dongguan that produces 16,000 bags per month.
To says prices start from about US$6 FOB Hong Kong for a mini-bag and climb to more than US$200 FOB Hong Kong for a brass bag covered with rhinestones. "We require a minimum order of 1,000 pieces, with delivery 45 days after receipt of a firm order," To adds.
One-year-old Foster Handbag Ltd, meanwhile, divides production of 10,000 pieces per month into day leather bags (80%) and dressy evening bags (20%).
The company's leather specialty is woven or mesh leather bags, while the evening bag division is dedicated to the production of beaded, knitted, wire, embossed or intricately decorated models.
One of the OEM firm's most popular evening bags is a wine-coloured clutch made of cow leather with an embossed croco print, which features a snap clasp, a zippered inside pocket and slots for a mobile phone and credit card and is priced at US$18 FOB Hong Kong.
"Embossing and pebble grain are two newer trends," observes managing director John Yip. "People used to want smooth leather but now they want a little more variety."
Delivery time for samples is 2-4 weeks with production at the firm's 30,000-square-foot, 202-worker mainland factory in Zhuhai normally taking 45-50 days, depending on the availability of a specific leather or material.
"Minimum order is 100 bags," Yip notes, adding that the firm exports 60% of its output to North America, 30% to Japan and the remainder to Australia and Europe.
Women know that an accessory like an evening bag is an essential finishing touch for dressy nights out on the town, and buyers know that Hong Kong manufacturers always have the right bag at the right price.
