Beaded/Embroidered Bags

Rich red is a popular colour for these evening bags from Yue Fung Industrial Co, a supplier serving the interests of women aged 30-50 years.

THE past decade has seen a transformation in the bag business. No longer do ladies' bags conform to set materials and styles. Now, when it comes to materials and trimmings, anything goes. Beads and embroidery in particular have made their mark on fashion and evening bags. Hong Kong manufacturers are quick to supply appropriate new styles.

Specializing in evening and fashion handbags for women aged 30-50 years, Yue Fung Industrial Co offers styles with beading or a combination of beading and embroidery.

The various materials include velvet from Japan or South Korea, grosgrain from South Korea or Taiwan and satin from South Korea or Japan. Unit prices for general styles are US$6-15 FOB Hong Kong, although more expensive models are also produced.

"Some of our bags use Swarovski rhinestones. We sell those models at about US$100 each," says sales manager Fonnie Cheung.

Active since 1981, Yue Fung now makes about 80,000 bags per month at its 350-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. Minimum order is 150 pieces per model per colour. Shipments go out about 55 days after order confirmation.

Yue Fung's Hong Kong-based designer produces about 20 new pieces per month. Resulting ranges are vital to the company's success. "Customers like our designs and finishes. They also find our prices reasonable," Cheung says.

At Wah Ngai Co, makers of ladies' evening bags since 1984, in-house designers freely use numerous materials. The new styles feature satin, shimmer satin, tissue faille, brocade, denim and nylon materials sourced from South Korea, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.

Wah Ngai's evening bags each cost US$1-20 FOB Hong Kong. "Typically, basic smaller bags with little or no embroidery or beading are at the lower end of the price scale," says manager Mandy Kwok. "The more expensive bags include full embroidery and rhinestones."

The company's factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland makes about 60,000 bags per month. Minimum order is 1,200 pieces, with at least 200 pieces per colour per style. Shipments to main markets like the US and Europe are ready 50-60 days after order confirmation.

"We market through advertising and attending exhibitions," says Kwok. "Customers also come to our offices. We work with them to meet their precise requirements. They know us, as well as our range. We are comfortable working alongside them to create what they want."

Active since 1998, Kinstar Industrial Co Ltd offers two main lines: normal fashion bags and more intensely worked beaded and embroidered evening bags. About 20,000 bags per month emerge from the company's 300-worker factory in Guangdong Province.

Kinstar's in-house designer develops new lines each season. The new range features beaded bags at US$3.70-5.20 FOB Hong Kong each.

"This industry is highly competitive so we position ourselves to provide good service and deliver exactly what customers want," says marketing director Stanley Ng.

The company's strengths are quality products and punctual delivery. Shipments are generally within 30 days of order confirmation. The clients range from large-order customers in Europe to smaller importers in Australia and the Middle East.

Minimum order is 200 pieces per style, although this can be flexible. "New customers can try us out by ordering a smaller amount. If they like our products, they can order more next time," Ng says.

Natural items are a speciality for Lap Sun Straw Products Mfy Ltd, which makes straw hats and bags, although merchandising manager Arthur Yau says the company plans to branch out.

"Use of natural materials has become very popular, and we hope to expand into still more different types of products," Yau says.

Lap Sun operates two factories on the Chinese mainland: a 400-worker site in Guangdong Province and a 600-worker facility in the northern city of Qingdao. Shipment can be arranged from Shenzhen in the south or Qingdao. Shipment from Shanghai will soon become another option.

The current range has paper-straw, woven-paper-straw, corn-husk and wheat-straw bags, all featuring embroidery. Unit prices are US$3-4 FOB Shenzhen or Qingdao.

Lap Sun's main market is the US. "We sell to very large distributors, generally chain stores, but also to some department stores," says Yau.

Monthly production is 30,000 bags. Minimum order is 2,000 pieces per style with shipment 60-90 days after order confirmation.

On The Road Again

Travel Bags

Tai Wing Luggage Ltd applies its 40 years of industry experience in providing customers with these and other high-quality travel bags.

AFTER experiencing a dip in late 2001, Hong Kong-based travel-bag manufacturers anticipate a business revival this year.

One confident producer is Tai Wing Luggage Ltd, established in 1962. Its ISO 9002-certified factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland produces luggage, travel bags and computer cases. Europe is an important market, with key buyers in Germany, Spain and the UK, and the company is increasing its visibility in the US.

"Our new products include models 9259C and 9278B, both made from 400D nylon/300D polyester," says sales manager Irene Li.

Model 9259C has carefully placed foam padding to produce a contoured shape on the side panel. The appearance is attractive, and Li says women may find it especially appealing. Dimensions are 48x28x18cm, and the bag features an adjustable shoulder strap and a hook-and-loop handgrip.

For a rather sporty look, model 9278B has two side pockets and the flap-opening main compartment. "There are lots of options to keep various items in the different pockets," says Li. Dimensions are 41x28x23cm. There is a hook-and-loop handgrip and adjustable shoulder strap.

Noting a trend toward more elegant travel bags, Li says the company imports quality materials, mostly from Taiwan, and pays "special attention to the finished quality".

Minimum order is 500 bags per design for shipment 30-45 days after order confirmation. Prices are available on application.

Another firm positive about its business prospects is HY Designs & Promotional Ltd, established in 1979. Its products include travel bags, sports bags, backpacks and shopping bags.

"We ship about 60,000 travel bags a month in peak season," says director Harris Yik. "Our major markets are the US, Canada, Germany and Scandinavia."

Unit prices for travel bags are US$2-10 FOB Hong Kong, depending on the size, materials and number of compartments.

Model HYS-4556 is a sporty travel bag in a combination of grey and black nylon with PVC. "This design sets the tone for attractive overnight bags of good quality at low cost," says Yik.

Access to the main compartment is via double zippers, and there are single-zip pouches at either end. The handgrip has a hook-and-loop fastener, while the shoulder strap features an adjustable comfort pad. Unit price is US$5.90 FOB Hong Kong based on a minimum order of 500 bags. Shipment is 25-40 days after order confirmation.

Buyers seeking trendy designs consult Chit Shing PVC Products Mfy Ltd, which supplies mainly the US, Japan and Europe. "We make to customer specifications, using private brand names and logos, and we do have major OEM clients," says executive assistant Tina Chan.

Good design means more than adding pockets and compartments. "It is important to match the appearance with overall usefulness and price to achieve the best possible product," says Chan.

New from Chit Shing is model 78-008, an all-nylon travel bag combining convenience with elegant style and measuring a generous 55x25x27cm. Along with the main compartment, there are side pockets and hand pouches, all with single zippers. Unit price is about US$5.20 FOB Hong Kong.

Sporty model 76-001 measures 46x23x25cm. "This bag has the familiar fishnet panels. Unit price is about US$4.20 FOB Hong Kong," Chan says.

For night-time activities, the company offers a new flashlight safety-bag series. Model 86-011 comes in seven designs, including all-light-up, all-normal-flash, clockwise-quick-flash, clockwise-slow-flash, swing-flash, anticlockwise-quick-flash and all-quick-flash. Dimensions are 46x25x23cm.

"All bags have handgrips and shoulder straps with hook-and-loop fasteners. We have models with single and double zippers. The materials include leather, PVC, PU and nylon. There are designs suitable for all ages," Chan says. Lead time is 30-45 days. Minimum order is 3,000 bags per model.

Asialuck Co Ltd general manager William Lau predicts a business rebound. "With the removal of US quotas and an early rise in the global economy, we expect full-capacity production for most of 2002," he says.

Established in 1983, the company can produce 200,000 travel bags monthly at its 350-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. "We strive for high quality at reasonable prices. Every bag is carefully inspected using rigorous QA methodology," says Lau.

Asialuck offers travel, sports, promotional and OEM bags. New models include the rectangular AL1786R at about US$4.60 FOB Hong Kong. Made from 420D nylon and 600D polyester, this bag has a twin-zip main compartment, large end compartments and side pockets. There is a hook-and-loop handgrip and an adjustable shoulder strap. Dimensions are 56x28x29cm.

"Our major markets are the US, Southeast Asia and Europe, where we work with private labels and promotional firms," says Lau. Minimum order is 1,000 bags per model for shipment within 30 days of order confirmation.

Buckled Up

Belts & Gloves

Fung Tat Leather Fty Ltd produces Tosca-brand leather goods like this embossed leather belt with an alloy buckle and these ladies' golf gloves with a paw-print motif.

EVER wander through the accessories area of a department store and wonder where those fabulously tooled leather belts come from? Or those lovely embossed snakeskin numbers? How about those fingerless faux leather gloves that evoke memories of Madonna? Like countless other fashionable accessories, many of these are made by Hong Kong companies.

Founded in 1989, Fung Tat Leather Fty Ltd specializes not only in fine leather belts, but also in wallets, organizers, briefcases and golf accessories, all created using leather imported from Italy, Pakistan and India. The products often carry the Tosca brand and sell in Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and elsewhere.

PU and similar synthetic materials are also used. Each month Fung Tat creates 70,000-80,000 pieces of such items. Minimum order is 300 pieces per item or colour. Shipments are ready 35-55 days after order confirmation.

An embossed leather belt (model B-2886) costs US$7.75 FOB Hong Kong while ladies' golf gloves (G-3234) are US$8.77 per pair.

The company's factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland spans 4,000 square metres and employs 400 workers. Company representative Kitty Sin anticipates receiving ISO 9000 certification by September.

Quality and service are deemed vital. "We guarantee the best quality and timely delivery," Sin says.

Glory Industrial (HK) Co produces an array of leather, imitation leather and synthetic fibre products like luggage, computer cases, beauty cases, bags, wallets, belts and various gift items. After nearly 24 years in business, Glory has fine-honed its skills in producing a wide range of quality accessories.

Among the company's leather belts are cowhide model N1023 (unit priced at US$5.83 FOB Hong Kong) and braided-cowhide style model 3010-20S (at US$4.40).

Using materials from Taiwan, the Chinese mainland, Japan and Italy, Glory produces at its 500-worker, six-storey factory in Dongguan. Major markets are scattered throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Minimum order is 1,000 pieces per item and colour. Shipment time is 35-55 days after order confirmation.

Granda Industries Ltd, founded in 1990, operates from its main offices in Hong Kong and a factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. The 20,000-square-foot factory employs 150 workers producing about 30,000 belts per month. The company also makes such genuine and imitation-leather accessories as handbags, purses, wallets, briefcases and portfolios.

Raw materials arriving at Granda's factory from Europe, Bangladesh, South Korea and the Chinese mainland can be tailored into products fully matching customers' visions.

Much of Granda's output carries the Mazinni brand. Prices depend on quantity and if the product has been customized, a service for which Granda is renowned.

"We are very famous on the Chinese mainland for our tailor-makes of genuine and imitation leather goods for international brand names," says sales director Patrick Wong. He says the firm's success with international brand names is due to outstanding grasp of its craft: "Our factory is a favourite for customers because the workmanship is excellent."

Fei Tat Handbag Fty is a company unwilling to be outdone - not in quality, workmanship and design, nor in price and service. Founded in 1989, Fei Tat oversees operations from its Hong Kong office while producing on the Chinese mainland. Its factory specializes in handbags, belts and gloves made of leather and synthetic materials sourced from the mainland.

Representative Louis Li expresses the simple, yet effective, common sense of the company's strategy. "Our business doesn't suffer during hard times because we are consistent in producing excellent quality items at reasonable prices," he says.

The latest product line includes a leather belt (model K1827-3) costing US$3.50 FOB Hong Kong and a pair of PVC/leather gloves at US$25 FOB Hong Kong.

"Designs, sizes, materials or even belt buckles from customers are always welcome," Li says.

Seven hundred workers at Fei Tat's 25,000-square-foot factory produce an impressive monthly output: 50,000 handbags and 300,000 other items. Minimum order is 50 pieces per design and colour. Samples are delivered 10 days after order confirmation. Products are shipped 15 days after sample approval. Major markets are Asia (Taiwan, Japan and Singapore), Australia and South Africa.

Eighteen-year-old Tat Lee Leather Fty Co offers goatskin and snakeskin weave belts, models TB128 and TB139 respectively.

"With more than 2,500 workers at three self-owned factories on the Chinese mainland, we can supply high-quality products at extremely competitive prices," says director Sandy Ng.

In addition to belts, the company designs and manufactures fashion bags, briefcases, rucksacks, wallets, belts and premium items. Its usual materials include snakeskin, cowhide, goatskin, PVC, PU and nylon.
