Cooler Bags(HKTDC Fashion - Leather Goods & Bags, Vol 01,2003)
These colourful polyester cooler bags from Hing Lee Handbag Mfe Ltd help keep food fresh and drinks cool in the great outdoors
Outdoor activities continue to gain global popularity with the realisation that sports, hiking and even the traditional Sunday picnic in the fresh air are beneficial to health and well-being.
This has resulted in a growing demand for dedicated product lines specifically designed for short-term storage and transportation of much-needed liquid refreshments and foodstuffs.
Established in 1980, Hing Lee Handbag Mfe Ltd caters to the continuing demands of ever-discerning consumers through a variety of cooler bag styles including a thermo bag, multi-bottle cooler and two-bottle wine cooler. Manufactured in hardwearing 600 denier polyester and available in a rainbow of colours, all Hing Lee products feature unique style elements with a multitude of uses.
The company sources materials such as polyester, canvas and leather primarily from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and South Korea. Manufacturing in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland, Hing Lee employs 450 workers to produce cooler bags for major markets including Europe, the US, Australia and Singapore. FOB prices are available on request for a minimum order of 2,000 pieces available 30-45 days after order confirmation.
An awareness of the growing cooler bag market by Action Handbag Co Ltd, which was established in 1988, has resulted in a rethink of the practical uses of this type of product.
"Our market research indicated that there was a great demand for cooler-bag style products to be made available in a variety of shapes other than the traditional box style," says general manager Elvis Leung. "As a result we produce cooler bags in a variety of unusual shapes and sizes including the bottle-holder cooler-bag, the shopper cooler-bag and the backpack cooler-bag."
Leung maintains these styles have become very popular with housewives, who appreciate the advantages of being able to keep perishable shopping items cool. "Our shopper cooler-bag, for instance, also features a mobile phone holder for the user's convenience, while the backpack cooler-bag is conveniently divided into two sections for segregation of food and drink items," he adds.
Action Handbag has a 20,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen employing some 700 workers who produce 270,000 pieces per month; the majority of which are shipped to the company's primary markets in Europe.
"Samples are available according to customer specifications and minimum orders are 1,000 pieces, while maximum orders can be as large as the customer requires as we are able to cater to the largest or smallest customer," said Leung. FOB prices depend on style and are available on request.
Chit Shing P.V.C. Products Mfy Ltd also caters for the growing cooler bag market while being keenly aware of customer demands for practical, functional and fashionable items.
Established in 1970, the company has introduced a number of unique design elements into its cooler-bag collection, including the popular cooler-bag chair. "The cooler-bag chair continues to grow in popularity because of its many uses," explains sales manager Jada Chan.
"Its strong metal frame means the cooler-bag chair can support the weight of an average adult, so it serves the dual purpose of keeping food and drinks cool when being transported and providing users with seating once they have reached their destination. Additional pockets also cater for storage of drink bottles, phones and other items often required by the user when on the move."
Sourcing raw materials from the mainland, Hong Kong and speciality fabrics from Taiwan, Chit Shing P.V.C. Products services major markets in Japan, the US, Europe and Australia. A factory in Dongguan on the mainland employs some 2,200 production staff to produce a growing product range in a kaleidoscope of colours. Chit Shing will accept minimum orders of 3,000 items at FOB prices available on request, with delivery 40-55 days after production.
"We have an excellent marketing plan and an extensive customer database and produce catalogues on a regular basis illustrating our growing range of products," Chan adds.
Kado Industrial Co Ltd, established in 1989, met the challenge of manufacturing a cooler bag that truly catered to customer demand by producing the "Fridge-to-go" cooling container.
"The production of the 'Fridge-to-go' has been timely for the company with demand for a product such as this growing steadily over the years," says Kado marketing executive Jonathan Chan.
The introduction of "Fridge-to-go" in a variety of sizes, the inclusion of built-in "ice blocks" and flexibility of the fabric used, allowing it to be folded and stored in the freezer while the ice blocks freeze, mean the "Fridge-to-go" is literally a refrigerator the outdoor enthusiast can carry regardless of the activity.
Kado produces 5,000-10,000 units per month at a factory in Dongguan. Minimum orders of 1,000 pieces, available at FOB prices obtainable on request, are delivered within 45 days to various major markets, including the US, the UK, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific.
