China - New National Standard on Wastewater Discharge for the Leather and Fur Industry

At the end of December 2013, the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection officially published the environmental protection standard Discharge Standard of Water Pollutants for Leather and Fur Making Industry (GB30486-2013). This standard set up specified regulations on leather and fur processing companies about wastewater discharge limits and requirements for monitoring and supervision. The standard added controlling indicators for total nitrogen, chloride ions and pollutants of the same class and refined the maximum discharge volume indicator. The Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard of 1996 (GB 8978-1996) will no longer be effective in the field of sewage discharge control within the leather and fur industry.

The newly published Discharge Standard of Water Pollutants for Leather and Fur Making Industry is more specific and stricter than the previous version.  It takes into consideration the actual situation of the domestic leather and fur industry and specifies 13 pollution factors: pH value, color and appearance, CODcr, BOD5, suspended solids (SS), ammonia-nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, animal and vegetable oil, sulphide, chloride ion, total chromium and chromium VI. New and existing tanning companies are mandated to follow and comply with the new regulations.
