Ironsteel Worldwide Ltd offers durable boots with steel plates and toe caps to comply with European, Australian and New Zealand safety standards.

PRODUCING footwear is an extremely competitive business, yet Hong Kong manufacturers consistently rank among industry leaders in the design and creation of top-notch boots for work and leisure.

Kong Cheong Shoes Ltd, a 13-year-old maker of industrial safety footwear, has a showroom in Hong Kong displaying samples from the more than 100,000 pairs per month emerging from its factory on the Chinese mainland.

"We have our own Rockstar brand of work boots. They are designed in-house and made from top-quality materials, with genuine leather for the shoe uppers and injected TPU for the soles. We offer a wide range of colours," says marketing officer Wendy Lau.

A Desma machine creates the shoe soles, and strict quality-control standards apply. Most customers are from the US, Europe and Asia. Minimum order is one TEU or 500 pairs per style. Shipment is within 50-60 days after order confirmation.

"Prices depend on many factors, but are always competitive, and we welcome all enquiries," says Lau.

Ironsteel Worldwide Ltd focuses on designing and producing work boots with steel plates and toe caps in compliance with safety standards for Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

"Under our Ironsteel brand, we have an extensive range of safety and non-safety footwear. We also produce many designs to customers' specifications," says company representative Alice Ko.

"We use high-quality cowhide imported from the US, South Korea or Taiwan. The workmanship quality is high, and our prices are competitive," explains Ko.

The company's T-21 design with a steel toe and plate, in combination with a gray-suede upper, costs US$17. A chocolate-coloured waxy nubuck creation with steel toe (T-51) is US$17.50. All prices are per pair and FOB Hong Kong.

At factories in Taiwan and on the Chinese mainland, Ironsteel Worldwide produces about 40,000 pairs of footwear monthly for export to customers in Australia, Malaysia, the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy. Minimum order is 500 pairs per style and colour. Shipment is about 60 days after order confirmation.

Shui Cheong Hong Enterprise Ltd applies more than 25 years of experience at its 30,000-square-foot factory producing shoes and boots on the Chinese mainland. The company serves many markets, but especially North America.

"We have excelled for a long time by focusing on quality at all stages, offering excellent customer services and having very competitive pricing," says assistant manager Patrick Ng.

Shui Cheong always offers more than 200 styles and stays flexible on special designs or specifications. The latest range includes leather safety workboots with steel toes (model SC299).

"We use PU, PVC and leather from Taiwan and South Korea. Through our Hong Kong office, we gladly deal with any special requirements or price enquiries," says Ng.

Minimum order is 2,400 pairs for shipment within 30 days after order confirmation.

Eternal Footwear Co Ltd began in 1971. "We have always focused on leisure shoes and built a good reputation by expanding modestly, offering quality products and providing excellent customer service. We know our customers will return to us," says managing director Daniel Chiu.

Although Eternal does manufacture to customers' designs, most products are from its own range, featuring the likes of corrected-grain cowhide uppers with TPR soles (model EH277) at US$9, PU-coated leather uppers with TPR soles (EH261B) at US$8 and leather uppers with PVC soles (EH683) at US$5.20. All prices are per pair and FOB Hong Kong based on 1,000-pair minimum orders for shipment within 30-40 days.

"We manufacture on the Chinese mainland using materials sourced there and from South Korea or Taiwan. Our customers are based all over the world, including Australia, Russia and Europe," says Chiu.

Man Cheong (Chong's) Int'l Investments Ltd has created sports, fashion and hiking shoes since 1992 and today exports more than 130,000 pairs per month to Europe and North America.

"We are very flexible and work to our own and customers' designs. Our reputation has grown by word of mouth and through exhibiting at major trade fairs," says merchandiser Felix Yeung.

Man Cheong's own range has many styles in PVC nubuck uppers with TPR soles starting at US$5.20 per pair FOB Hong Kong.

While producing with 800 workers on the Chinese mainland, the company handles sales and marketing from Hong Kong. No minimum order is required, and shipments follow order confirmation by 4-5 weeks.
