Carry-On Luggage(HKTDC Fashion - Leather Goods & Bags, Vol 01,2003)
Made to Measure
Silverose Co Ltd uses materials from the Chinese mainland to produce items like this EVA trolley case and travel bag for export to Europe
With airlines becoming increasingly strict on the size of personal carry-on luggage, it's important that there is a good supply of bags to meet their requirements. Hong Kong manufacturers have been quick to ensure there is no shortage of bags that fit snugly into the overhead locker.
Silverose Co Ltd, established in 1989, produces a wide range of luggage. "We manufacture a large assortment of bags to meet our customers' wide-ranging needs, but we have specialised in travel bags in the past few years," says merchandiser Terra Chan.
The company has an in-house design department with the dual task of developing its own lines, as well as providing support for customers requiring a tailor-made product. Among its recent additions are the ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) Trolley Case and the EVA Travel Bag, priced at US$8 and US$4 FOB Hong Kong per unit respectively.
"Our prices are based on a minimum order of one FEU, and larger orders can expect some price flexibility," adds Chan who promises delivery within 45 days of order confirmation.
Silverose has a permanent workforce of around 200 at its 100,000- square-metre factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, with sales and marketing based in Hong Kong.
Chan maintains that the company's main customers are in Europe where she says the company has built up a solid reputation for good quality and pricing.
Hon Shing Hats & Bags Manufactory Ltd, registered as a limited company in 1987 but actually having more than 30 years of bag manufacturing experience, exports more than 160,000 pieces per month to customers throughout the world.
"Our major customers are in France, Italy, Germany, and Spain and we count many top brands among them," says marketing manager Xavier Ng.
"We attend the Frankfurt and Hong Kong trade fairs every year, which gives us a chance to meet with current customers and make our name known to potential new ones."
Hon Shing specialises in travel bags and its extensive range includes the Carry-on Bag with Belt and Carry-on Bag and Trolley. FOB prices depend on quantity and specifications, and all enquiries are welcome.
"We have a very innovative design department and most of our travel bags are our own designs with slight modifications from our customers," explains Ng.
The company has a minimum order requirement of 1,000 pieces and will deliver 45-55 days after confirmation of order. Ng maintains Hon Shing's success is due to flexibility, good service and, above all, very good prices.
Equally well placed to understand the latest trends and meet the demands of its customers is Glory Industrial (HK) Co, with almost 25 years in the business.
Managing director Paul Yang explains, "A lot of our customers have been with us for many years and we know what they need. It's essential to see what is happening in the market and currently trolleys, which can be comfortably carried on planes as hand luggage, are in demand."
Glory mainly makes bags to its customers' own designs, using leather, imitation leather and a full range of manmade materials from the Chinese mainland and the Asian region.
Two of its own recent designs, however, are the 20-inch Pullman with telescopic trolley at US$16.28 per piece, and a more basic Travelling Bag at US$9.26 per piece.
All prices are FOB Hong Kong based on a minimum order of 1,000 pieces per item per colour for delivery 35-70 days after confirmation of order.
"We produce our bags at our own factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, where very strict quality control is in operation throughout the manufacturing process," says Yang. "Our reputation is based on high quality, flexibility and competitive prices."
Fortune Handbag Manufacturing Ltd offers a wide range of bags, from handbags to computer cases. Established in 1978, the company has its own range of around 20 different styles, but mainly produces to clients' specifications.
"To compete in the current market you have to be very flexible. Our designers are always there to lend a hand to customers should they need it," says merchandiser Sally Lau.
She says the company has two factories in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland, with a combined space of 60,000 square feet and about 600 workers.
Fortune manufactures in PVC, PU, nylon, leather, denim, and canvas sourced from South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and the mainland. Its own range includes a series of polyester travel bags, ranging in price from US$4.80-$6.00 per piece FOB Hong Kong.
The minimum order requirement is 200 pieces per style for delivery 45-60 days after confirmation of order. "Most of our customers are based in the US and Europe, and by ensuring our quality remains very high, our reputation continues to spread by word of mouth," says Lau.
