Fancy-Handled Bags

SWITCHING handbags is often enough to move from casual to dressy appearance. More than the size and design of a bag matters. The handle does too. Length of a handle, its design and what it is made from are all potential deciding factors in whether to buy a particular bag.

A beautiful beaded handle on a handbag from Vanessa Brig Ltd indicates the product is purely for evening use or other occasions requiring no heavy items to carry. The delicate handle is consistent with the bag's lovely design.

"These beaded bags are completely handmade," says director John Yip. While woven leather bags are Vanessa Brig's speciality, the company began developing beaded bags five years ago.

"Beaded bags became popular, so we had to change with the market," says Yip. These products are priced at about US$37.20 FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 50-100 pieces, and delivery time is after 45 days. Main markets include the US, Japan, Europe and Australia.

Vanessa Brig began in 1971 and has long-term relationships with most customers. "The designs are a mix of what clients ask for and our own designs. We don't come up with a collection. We make designs to suit each client," says Yip.

The company has a 200-worker factory in Zhuhai, on the Chinese mainland, plus a 20-member research-and-development team. "We also maintain an independent quality-control team responsible only to the Hong Kong merchandising team," says Yip.

More bags with delicately beaded handles come from Celesway Int'l Ltd. Bags with floral-patterned beadwork are classics capable of matching almost any outfit.

Founded in 1989, Celesway also makes garments and fashion accessories. "Our products are mid- to high-end and mostly made of fabric," says manager Heidi Cheuk, adding that the beadwork, crochet work and embroidery are all handmade.

"FOB Hong Kong prices are US$2-30. We export to the US, Europe and Japan," says Cheuk. The company's bags carry the Cachet label in the US, and retail at Superdrug and Kingfisher in the UK.

"We also have our own brand names, Celesway and Seronny. Each month we come out with 30-50 styles our clients can choose from," says Cheuk.

Raw materials from Japan, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland all arrive at the company's mainland factory in Shantou. Minimum order is 300 pieces per style, and delivery time is 45-60 days.

Satin, beaded handbags from Yue Fung Industrial Co are dressy enough for evening, but have sturdy handles to carry heavier items. For these bags, FOB Hong Kong prices are US$7-8.

Founded in 1981, Yue Fung has a 350-worker factory in Dongguan, on the Chinese mainland, and a monthly output of 60,000 pieces.

"We have a lot of experience in different markets. We export to Japan, the US, Europe and the Middle East, so we design according to the markets," says director Ringo Ng.

"Once customers see our several collections per season, they choose and sometimes modify. We e-mail digital photos to clients who cannot come to our showroom," says Ng. Minimum order is 200 pieces per model, and delivery time is 50 days.

Sturdy, all-purpose handbags are always a necessity, and Chun Sing Handbag Mfe Fty designs feature no-nonsense handles. The bags carry various brands, including Finter, Azalea and Kalola.

"Most of our bags are made of PVC from South Korea, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. They are quite affordable and target the low- to mid-range market," says marketing manager Fanny Yau.

"We come out with about 30 styles a month. In addition, we can custom-make bags for clients. We offer quality and service at competitive prices," she adds.

Founded in 1985, Chun Sing has a 200-worker factory, with monthly production of 30,000 pieces, in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. Minimum order is 400 pieces per style, and delivery time is within 60 days. Main markets include the Middle East, Europe and the US.

York Star Co Ltd makes beautifully designed leather and fabric bags with well-designed handles. The braided leather handle on a fabric model enhances the overall design while maintaining sturdiness.

"Our designers spend a lot of time travelling and researching market trends so they can come up with good designs," says managing director Georgiana Chan. Main markets include Italy, France, Japan, the US and Australia.

"Our products are quite high end. Sometimes our bags are even better than those imported brands. I'm very proud about this and try to maintain this level of quality while still selling at competitive prices," says Chan.

The bags appear under house labels Eliana and Prego. The FOB Hong Kong prices are US$20-32. Minimum order is 3,000 pieces, and delivery time is 90 days. The company has a 120,000-square-foot factory with 1,000 workers in Guangdong Province, on the Chinese mainland.

"We have been in this business since 1982. Some clients have been with us for more than 10 years. Customer service is very important to us, and we work closely with all clients," says Chan.

Easy Rollers

Trolley Bags

ARGUABLY, Hong Kong is the best place in the world to source trolley bags and other wheeled luggage. This quick review of a few leading manufacturers demonstrates that Hong Kong is a one-stop-shop for this type of merchandise. Few, if any, other production centres offer the wealth of variety in luggage ranges routinely available from this bustling city.

Lee & Man Co Ltd, a 23-year-old enterprise, makes all types of luggage. Its 3,000 workers, mostly on the Chinese mainland, assemble the product range from imported Taiwanese nylon and polyester. Prices are keen. For example, the suitcase trolley illustrated here costs US$18 FOB Hong Kong.

Monthly production tops 200,000 pieces, and minimum orders should fill an FEU. Deliveries take 60 days. The company's principal markets are in the US, Europe and Japan.

"We believe in the importance of delivering the right product at the right price and the right time. We offer good designs and well-controlled deliveries," says sales manager Marina Lee.

"What's also significant about us is our size. We are big enough to secure good prices from our materials suppliers. This advantage can be passed on to customers in our prices."

Another company rubric is that quality, customer service and prices are all equally important.

Nylon and polyester twill cases from Ban Wah Leather Products (HK) Ltd are made to last. A wholesaler since 1985 and a manufacturer since 1990, the company produces luggage, travel bags, backpacks and trolley cases.

Six hundred workers at the company's factory on the Chinese mainland use polyester, PU and PVC as the main raw materials. With monthly production capacity of 130,000 pieces and a minimum order of 600 pieces, the company can deliver in 60 days. Its main markets are in southern Asia and Europe.

"Prices for our trolley cases are US$7-14. We can quote a Hong Kong price or a Xiamen ex-factory price," says Ban Wah director Lau Lok Hung.

"Mostly we manufacture in polyester and PVC because these materials - with so many colour and pattern choices - optimize costs for customers. Since our business is mostly OEM, this is important. Equally important is that we have our own factory, so we control quality and delivery times. We know customers must get first priority."

Associated Industrial Co Ltd makes elegant and practical luggage. The wheeled duffle pictured below represents a range that covers luggage, travel bags, trolleys and ladies' handbags.

Founded in 1967, Associated Industrial produces 100,000 upright trolleys per month. Minimum order is one FEU, with delivery in 75 days.

Branded as Bon Voyage, the goods are found in major markets like France, the UK, Canada and the US. The principal raw material is polyester from the Chinese mainland, where the company has its main production unit.

Styling is important. "We have a good design team and a sampling room for research and development purposes, and so we can do both OEM and original-design work. Our own brand has its own product line which we renew each year," says export manager Frankie Lee.

"When it comes to reliability, you have to understand we are one of the oldest in this industry in Hong Kong, and we have more than 1,000 workers in China and in the Philippines - so quota is never a problem. Because of our long history, we are also financially stable. Because we are financially stable and quite big, we get good prices from suppliers. This results in benefits passing to our customers."

From Jing Jin Travelling Bags Mfy Ltd comes a stylish sports bag with trolley. Costing US$13.50 per item FOB Hong Kong, this striking product is from a range of sports bags, travel bags, rucksacks, snowboard bags, bikebags and body packs. These can be produced at a rate of 60,000 per month. Minimum orders should be 1,000 pieces, with deliveries after 45-60 days.

Sometimes branded Sport Power, the products appear mainly in Germany, the UK, France and Japan. An 800-strong workforce on the Chinese mainland creates from nylon and polyester.

"We have a very high quality regime. This is because we do OEM business for companies like Puma, Mizuno and Walt Disney. When dealing with such international brand-name companies, you must be sure of your quality," says merchandising manager Alan Lee.

"In fact, these customers come to check our factory environment and quality-control standards at least once a year. So we know we have high standards to offer other customers as well."

Stylish Computations

Computer Bags

COMPUTER bags may have one main function, but that does not stop them from varying in what else they can hold or how they can be transported - never mind in materials, colours and finishes. Hong Kong manufacturers pack variety into the purpose and designs of their computer carriers.

Jibsen Industrial Ltd applies its history of making handbags, backpacks and travel bags in the design of a computer-bag range. Model 502 is a 600D polyester bag with a large front flap. This style is mainly produced in black, but can incorporate wide, royal-blue trim on the flap. The cost is US$6.30 FOB Hong Kong.

Model 607 is a koskin PVC backpack costing US$7.83 FOB Hong Kong. The company also produces a briefcase-style, PU computer bag costing US$9.47 FOB Hong Kong. All three styles include a carry handle and shoulder strap.

Jibsen Industrial's minimum order for computer bags is 1,000 pieces per style and colour. Delivery time is usually 45-60 days after order confirmation, but merchandiser Fanny Wong says this can be accelerated. "If a customer needs an order quickly, we can help," she says.

The company sources 600D polyester from Taiwan. The koskin and PU come from South Korea. Production takes place at Jibsen Industrial's 600-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.

Wong says the company sells to the premium markets in the US and Canada. "Our prices are very competitive," she adds.

Masterise Co Ltd makes small travel items, such as handy, travel-carry and airline bags. Its computer-bag range includes style NY47-5702E, a multifunctional travel bag. This model doubles as an overnight bag, and prices start from US$15 FOB Hong Kong.

Model NY80-6094 is a smaller, handy organiser for documents, featuring a separate zipper pouch for a laptop computer. This product is priced from US$10 FOB Hong Kong. Other products in the range include a volume-carry tote and a briefcase organiser designed for use on short trips.

Although the company specifies a minimum order of 500 pieces for smaller products, there is no minimum requirement for these two models.

Masterise uses nylon from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. Delivery takes 30-45 days. "We can guarantee the best possible quality and ensure prompt delivery," says director Jennifer Tsang.

The company's factory in Dongguan, on the Chinese mainland, covers 5,000 square metres and uses 500 sewing machines. Bags made there are sold to customers in the US, Japan, and Europe, including England, Italy and France.

Kam Yin Industrial Co Ltd has been in the bag business for more than 15 years. It manufactures about 20,000 dozen handbags, computer bags, portfolios, backpacks and sports bags per month at its 1,000-worker factory in Shenzhen. Most are made from nylon, PVC or cotton canvas sourced from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.

The company makes a U-138 PVC trolley computer case with three sections: zipped compartments for the computer and for fan files, and a third snap-closure pocket for general purposes. The product, model TW10P1, costs US$21.33 FOB Hong Kong.

Another popular product is model AL-KY38, an 840D nylon computer case with a large front flap, featuring one main compartment and a fan-file section. This model costs about US$11.14 FOB Hong Kong.

Prices vary depending on quantity ordered. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces per style and colour.

"We offer competitive prices for quality goods," says sales manager Dawes Cheung, adding that the company's main advantage is good service. Filling orders generally takes 50-60 days. The main customers are in the US and Canada.

Tai Wing Luggage Ltd, a maker of travel bags since 1965, produces about 50,000 pieces monthly at its 100,000-square-foot, 400-worker factory in Shenzhen.

A 15-inch 600D polyester computer case with two main zipped compartments and a small front zipped pocket, grip handle and shoulder strap, model TW1372, costs US$9.50. The colour possibilities are brown, navy, dark green and black.

Model 8821TC is a 19 1/2-inch trolley case with computer bag suitable for hand luggage. It is made from 2520D high-density nylon with leather and costs US$31.50.

A 17-inch PVC computer case with trolley, model TW1718, costs US$15.90, while an 18-inch 600D polyester EVA computer case, model 9233, is US$17.50. These prices are FOB Hong Kong based on orders of one full FEU.

"We produce high-quality goods. Our materials come from Taiwan, and we have a highly trained workforce at our factory," says sales manager Irene Li.

Tai Wing Luggage delivers to customers worldwide. Its minimum order is 500 pieces, and delivery takes 50-60 days.
