Stiletto Shoes

For Grand Pacific Int'l Ltd, dressy, open-back stilettos decorated with buckles or bows, like this all-red model, are especially popular in Europe.

SPIKY, stiletto shoes command a proud place in fashion history. Women enjoy wearing them for the way high heels can give their calves a shapelier look and attract admiring glances.

With the popularity of stilettos again rising, Hong Kong suppliers offer a spirited array of sandals, pumps and boots to satisfy every taste and price requirement. Buyers choose among materials like leather, fabrics and synthetics, with the designs reflecting European trends.

The lush look and feel of calf leather are evident in strappy, summery stilettos from Shoes Gallery Export Ltd. Priced at US$12.50 per pair FOB Hong Kong, these feature understated designs for broad market appeal.

"Our styles are classic, yet contemporary. Some have accessories, like bows or bits of decoration on the front. We want to keep the designs simple to appeal to the largest number of buyers," says director Jeffrey Ng.

The eight-year-old company exports mainly to Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia while expanding recently into Japan. "We want to focus on high-end quality, making us different from some competitors," Ng says.

At Shoes Gallery's factory in Zhongshan on the Chinese mainland, 150 workers produce 20,000 pairs per month, mostly for women. About 30% of these fall into the stiletto category. Along with leather, the materials include lambskin and PU.

Half the production arises from OEM work. Remaining products carry the company's own brands: Sagittarius and J'esjimo. Minimum order is 500 pairs per style for shipment 30-45 days after order confirmation.

At Sunbo (HK) Ltd, this year's most popular materials are denim and PU, says director Matthew Kwong. Buckles, bows and flowers are frequent design accessories, and a new-look slim heel attracts attention while providing stability without chunkiness.

An OEM manufacturer, Sunbo has 250 workers creating 150,000 pairs of shoes for men, women and children each month at its factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. Stiletto styles, accounting for 20-30% of production, cost US$3.50-4.20 per pair FOB Hong Kong.

"Some customers like basic styles. Others want more fashion-oriented designs. We follow the designs our customers request," says Kwong. The five-year-old company concentrates on spring and summer styles, mainly for the US and Europe.

The minimum order is one TEU of mixed items. Customers can expect shipment 45-60 days after order confirmation.

Open-back or sling-back stilettos are sure ways to keep feet cool in summer. In response to customer demand, OEM supplier Grand Pacific Int'l Ltd has stepped up production of these models, says merchandising manager Teresa Ou.

"These models are especially popular in Europe. We sell many open-back shoes and dressier styles." One striking creation is an all-red open-back number. Buckles and small bows are popular accessories on the company's PU stilettos, which have 7-9cm heels and cost US$4-5 per pair FOB Hong Kong.

Each month, 1,500 workers make about 100,000 pairs of shoes in casual-to-dressy styles, mainly for women, at Grand Pacific's two factories in Dongguan. Stilettos account for 10%. Japan and Europe are the leading markets. Minimum order is one TEU. Shipments depart 50 days after order confirmation.

Risen Footwear (HK) Co Ltd, a specialist in women's casual and business-wear shoes, is relatively new at making stilettos. "We had requests from one customer in the US and two in Russia so we began making them," explains assistant general manager Dorothy Goh.

The shoes, sporting 8-10cm heels, are mainly for evening use. Priced at US$9.15-11.50 per pair FOB Hong Kong, they can be ordered in summer or winter styles. Risen Footwear also offers suede stiletto boots that stop just below the knees and cost US$12 per pair FOB Hong Kong.

Stilettos account for 20% of the company's monthly output of 30,000-35,000 pairs. The trickiest part is the heels. "You have to make sure the heels are high quality and properly centred on the shoes," Goh says.

For stilettos, a minimum order is 200 pairs for shipment 45-60 days after order confirmation.

Although cowhide and kidskin are the most popular materials, denim and printed fabrics are also available. All production is at the company's 350-worker factory in Dongguan.

Most of the company's shoes are designed in-house, with OEM production constituting the remainder. The company has three brands of its own: Che Sera, Ungharese and Bon Giorno. Europe is the main export market, followed by the US, Japan and elsewhere in Asia.
