The global spotlight once again fallS on one of the fashion world's most eagerly-awaited events

HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer is one of the most important trade shows on the international calendar for both exhibitors and buyers.

The proof can clearly be seen in the latest statistics, which show that last year's event attracted a record 1,147 exhibitors from 19 countries and regions.

Seven group pavilions from China, India, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan took part, as did first-time participants Russia, Spain and Turkey.

In addition, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) organised 64 missions with more than 2,250 buyers from around the world.

These included buying representatives from well-known fashion brands and leading chain stores and distributors such as Australia's Hathor Pty; Hungary's Antalok; Italy's MaxMara and Lotto Italian Sport Design; Japan's Senso Unico; Poland's LLP SA and Monnari Trade SA; Spain's Confecciones Mayoral, SA and Adolfo Dominguez; and Sweden's Make-Up Store.

Broad array

The four-day fair showcased a broad array of fashion, accessories and garment-related products, including apparel and handbags, shoes, fashion jewellery and fabric.

A must-stop for fashion professionals, last year's HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer introduced three new themed zones - Infant and Children's Wear Zone, Emporium de Mode and Spice Arena - to help buyers stay on top of trends and for ease of sourcing.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, HKTDC Garment Advisory Committee Chairman Andrew Leung said that the Infant and Children's Wear zone was created in response to demand.

"Emporium de Mode showcases quality clothing with outstanding designs," he added, while Spice Arena offers "a heady array of fashion accessories".

Popular attractions

This year's Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer will again be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 8-11 July.

Like previous events it will feature such popular sections as:

  • the Garment and Accessories Mart consisting of basic mass merchandise
  • Fashion Gallery, which will spotlight high fashion from Hong Kong and overseas
  • Emporium de Mode - a premium section dedicated to presenting stylish and distinctive garments in an elegant setting
  • Special product zones: Body & Intimate Wear; Bridal & Evening Wear; Infant & Children's Wear; Fabrics & Yarn; Spice Arena (handbags, footwear, hats and scarves)
  • International Fashion Designers' Showcase featuring designer collections and fashion design talents

A series of fashion shows and professional seminars has also been organised by the HKTDC to provide industry players with up-to-date market intelligence.

The highly successful hktdc.com customised sourcing service, which was introduced last year to help buyers locate the exhibitors and suppliers they need with precision and ease, will again play a prominent role.

Fashion award

The list of attractions at HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer rounds off with the Hong Kong New Fashion Collection Award, which encourages Hong Kong companies to work with local designers in building brand collections.

The award represents the increasing importance of one of Hong Kong's most important industries, which saw total exports of clothing and accessories increase almost 2% to more than US$28bn in 2007.

This year's HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer is certain to prove a real runway success and a fitting complement to HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Autumn/Winter, which is Asia's largest and the world's second-largest fashion event, and World Boutique.
