Fit For Life
Sporting products from Silcon Enterprises Ltd include (left to right) a pedometer watch, thermometer key holder, four-hand alarm key holder watch and compass key holder
Apart from simply trying to stay fit, on weekends and holidays throughout the year people flock to the countryside in pursuit of leisure and life in the great outdoors. Happily, Hong Kong is able to supply them with all their needs - from sporting and fitness goods to tents and camping accessories of every description.
For example, there are specialised watches designed specifically for outdoor sporting activities. Silcon Enterprises Ltd, established in 1980, is primarily a watchmaker offering basic, classic and fashionable timepieces. However, Silcon also offers models with special features.
"We have watches with features relating to camping and sports activities," says marketing executive Grace Leung. "For example, we have pedometer watches and two-handed analogue watches complete with LCD stopwatch functions for runners. Then there are compass and key holder models, some also coming with thermometers and available with or without alarms."
Silcon employs movements and parts imported from Switzerland and uses alloy cases of its own design. The minimum order is 500 pieces per model and delivery is 30-40 days after confirmation of order. Silcontek is the in-house brand name, and production takes place at a factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.
For something quite different, Asian Resources Int'l Ltd, established in 1995, manufactures fitness, beauty and general household goods including a muscle toner belt. This comes in several variations for use on the trunk of the body or the arms and legs.
"While some people enjoy exercising and keeping fit, not all have the time and opportunity. So the theory behind our belt, which works while the user is sitting at a desk, is to send tiny pulses of electric current to the muscles to make them contract," says marketing officer Toby Cheng.
"We use aluminium flock with a conductive gel, or even a thin film of water, to form contact points between the belt and body. There are two basic models but many different variations, most of which are made according to clients' requests."
The minimum order is 500 sets and delivery is 30 days after confirmation of order. All materials for the belt come from the mainland, and a mercury battery is included. The company exports worldwide from its factory in Shenzhen.
For hot or cold drinks, Mobicool Int'l Ltd is a manufacturer of thermoelectric coolers/warmers and compressor coolers. The company has an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001-certified factory and a management team with more than 16 years' experience in the design of thermoelectric and compressor cooling units.
"We have electrical cooling and heating function boxes for campers, allowing food and drink to be kept hot or cold. They come in many sizes, with the smallest having a capacity of about five litres and the biggest thermoelectric type a capacity of 45 litres. They operate on 12V DC, typically from a car battery. They can simply be plugged into the cigarette lighter socket," says marketing manager Alton Wong.
FOB Hong Kong unit prices are US$20.50 for the CT-07-12; US$24.50 for the CT-08-12; and US$27 for the CT-20-12. Raw materials include PP and ABS sourced on the mainland.
Wong says there is a good demand for OEM products and that Mobicool is happy to place private logos. "We do not have an in-house brand, and sell our products with just the model name," he says.
Happy campers can also contact 11-year-old High World Industries Ltd, which produces camping equipment including tents, sleeping bags and, to special order, outdoor tables and chairs. "We even make a family-sized tent that has individual rooms, mosquito-mesh windows and an entranceway mesh," says product manager Lawrence Lam.
The range also includes two-person easy carry tents, a three-person dome tent and a four-person family tent.
Fibreglass forms the posts and frame, while polyester (with PE for the bottom parts to provide waterproofing) is the tenting fabric. Tapered seams are part of the design and tents come in various colours.
"We use plastic to make tents as it is light and packs into a small volume. However, pegs are made of steel and the guy ropes are PP," he says. Sleeping bags have polyester fibre padding and a polyester taffeta outer.
"An extra service for customers ordering our tents is the provision of camping chairs and folding tables in aluminium or steel according to request, usually in polyester fabric with an Oxford weave," he says.
Minimum orders are negotiable and the delivery time is about 60 days from confirmation of order. Production takes place at the company's factory in Hangzhou on the Chinese mainland. The major market is Europe.
