Watch Gift Sets(HKTDC Gifts, Premium & Stationery, Vol 01,2005)
Presenting The Best
In line with this development, offering appealing gift sets of fashionable timepieces-cum-accessories has become a popular way to stimulate demand in mature markets.
Art Style Enterprises Ltd, for example, takes pride in producing 925 sterling silver watches and fashion accessories such as bracelets, pendant sets and earrings, which usually form the basis of a standard gift set.
"Sterling silver is a precious metal with a particular style, and is much more expensive and attractive than mass-market items like brass or alloy," notes general manager Jovi Chan.
"We have been making items from this metal for more than 10 years, and they now form our best-selling lines - especially in Europe, where silver always seems to be vogue."
The 14-year-old firm produces 10,000 sterling silver watches per month. "About 80% of our annual sales is generated by these watches and other silver products, usually tailored to meet the demands of OEMs," says Chan.
Orders start at a minimum of 30 watches per model, while delivery takes about 40 days after order confirmation. "They go mainly to wholesalers, importers and department stores in major markets such as Europe, the US and Asia," Chan says. "We also manufacture exclusive designs for some well-known jewellery boutiques in Europe."
About 200 staff at Art Style's factory in Panyu on the Chinese mainland offers one-stop services from design and sampling to moulding and finished product production.
Firmode (Int'l) Co Ltd is another firm offering ladies' and men's watch gift sets in styles designed to appeal to discerning buyers. Founded in 1985, this dedicated timepiece manufacturer offers a diverse range of alloy and stainless steel watch sets that are easily matched to fashion accessories.
"We have watch sets that sell from about US$4 FOB Hong Kong and up, while other items incorporate Czech crystals," says sales manager Sandy Lui. "Our major market is the US, and buyers there are especially fond of watch gift sets as they can generally bear higher retail price tags."
According to Lui, Firmode's minimum order requirement is 500 sets per model, usually shipped 45 days after order confirmation. The ODM/OEM manufacturer has a three-storey factory in Dongguan on the mainland, and a monthly production of 350,000 watches.
Meanwhile, Wah Tai (Far East) Development Ltd offers mid-range watch and jewellery gift sets for markets including the US, Europe, South America and Asia.
"To stay competitive, our products are made of high quality zinc alloy, brass and stainless steel imported from Australia, Korea, Japan and Germany," says sales manager Michael Yeung.
The company, which began making imitation jewellery and assembling watches in 1985, has a pool of more than 1,000 designs for men and women and produces about 30,000 units each month.
Wah Tai's ladies' watch gift sets usually go together with stylish jewellery items like necklaces, pendants and earrings. For men, the sets can mix-and-match with items of stationery or fashion accessories such as tie-clips and lighters.
The firm's 15,000-square-foot Shenzhen factory on the mainland employs 800 workers. Interestingly, Wah Tai can create its own tooling and moulds, thus avoiding the potential problem of copyright infringement.
"This approach is favoured by OEM customers," explains Yeung, stating that the minimum order value is US$2,000 for delivery 35-45 days after confirmation.
Accutime Watch Mfy Co Ltd, established in 1999, offers watch gift sets under its own Perucci brand in the FOB Hong Kong US$4-15 per set price range.
Usually sporting waterproof and long-life plating features, Accutime says its watches comprise alloy cases and Japanese movements. "Our factory in Guangdong Province on the mainland delivers new designs about two months before the start of each major buying season and can produce more than 20 new models each quarter," says manager Suleman Lakhani. "Our major product lines include classic, fashion and sporty looks."
Accutime's 200-worker factory accepts minimum orders for 500 watches per model for delivery 45 days after confirmation. Major markets are the US, Mexico, the UK, Austria, the Middle East and South America.
Fully supported by sophisticated watch and jewellery industries, Hong Kong manufacturers of watch gift sets have a handy start in fun, funky and formal presents for all people and occasions.
