MATERIALS abound in the jewellery box sector, with choices ranging from PU leatherette and velvet to porcelain, polyresin and silver-plated zinc alloy.

Wellpute Industries Ltd's team of 10 designers focuses on OEM designs. Monthly production at the 10,000-square-metre, 800-worker factory in Chaozhou on the Chinese mainland is 400,000 pieces, and 90% of these are OEM designs. Why? The answer lies in Wellpute's choice of material - porcelain, which is popular in the premium sector.

Model FP-46203 is a porcelain jewellery box with gold-plated rims and hand-painted floral decorations, priced at US$1.20 FOB Hong Kong. "Hand-painting is our speciality," says director Eddie Ng. "As part of our QC, we check each product by hand to make sure the surface is smooth for painting."

For small orders, the eight-year-old company uses decals instead of hand-painting. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces, and delivery to the main markets of Europe and the US is 45 days after order confirmation.

Wellpute's product range also includes vases, water pots, tea sets and photo frames, all priced for the midrange to high-end sectors.

To survive in the polyresin sector, Heng Tong Int'l Trading & Consulting Co focuses on service. "We give advice on shipping and design to our customers and try to make them happy," says company representative K. Kan. Heng Tong's main markets are Europe and the US. Minimum order is 3,000 pieces, with a 55-day delivery lead time.

Aside from jewellery boxes, the product range encompasses photo frames, desk sets, money and music boxes and figurines. Figurines play an important part in the design of Heng Tong's jewellery boxes - not so unusual considering that the eight-year-old company started out manufacturing figurines.

Priced at US$0.60 FOB Hong Kong each are: polyresin jewellery box C3274, featuring a bear with a basketball perched on an open book; flower-and-butterfly model C3264C; and round model C3263C. "The rim is the only part of the design we outsource," says Kan.

Monthly production at Heng Tong's 500-worker, 20,000-square-metre factory in Fuzhou on the Chinese mainland is 300,000 pieces.

For 14-year-old Namford Ltd, design is of prime importance. Round, antique-style, silver-plated jewellery box 8541904 is made of zinc alloy and sells for US$3.03 FOB Hong Kong. For the inside lining, velvet or satin is available. Rectangular, silver-plated jewellery box 8535451 with a floral pattern is priced at US$4.14.

While Namford's jewellery boxes are elaborately designed on the outside, they are very simple inside - but this will change in the near future, according to director Grace Cheung. "We want to add more compartments and combinations to our models."

To enable Namford's designers to create 20-30 new designs annually, they are sent to gift shops around the world for inspiration. Monthly production is 5,000 jewellery boxes, with 40% being OEM designs.

The full product range at the 300,000-square-foot, 1,000-worker factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland includes compact mirrors, vanity sets, purse accessories, desktop stationery and tableware. Minimum order is 500 pieces, for delivery in 40-60 days.

Multifunctional comes to mind when looking at jewellery box S-700S3 from Yap's Industrial Ltd. Made of PU leatherette, the model features velvet-lined drawers and is priced at US$9.50 FOB Hong Kong. Velvet jewellery box S-711 with a lift-up compartment sells for US$6.50.

The main markets include Europe, Japan and the US. Minimum order stands at 1,200 pieces, for delivery 30-40 days after order confirmation.

When it comes to design, the company's emphasis lies in its choice of materials, according to design director Danny Yap. All sourcing is done direct. "Italy is always the first country we look to for materials," says Yap. "We will buy one lot of materials from Italy and send that to a [South] Korean factory."

Established in 1967, Yap's Industrial turns to Italy not only for materials but for design inspiration as well. The company's three designers produce 20-30 new designs for jewellery and musical jewellery boxes annually. The result is a monthly production of 200,000 pieces from the three-storey, 600-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.

TODAY'S umbrellas include a refreshingly wide range of designs in bright colours to keep users dry and smiling when the sun does not shine. Hong Kong companies produce mostly under OEM terms, with many well-known clients who demand a high standard of quality.

Established in 1986, Kwong Hing Umbrella (HK) Co Ltd manufactures a full range of umbrellas under OEM terms. Clients include many US-based fashion brands such as Nicole Miller and Anne Klein. Other main markets are Europe and Japan.

Says general manager for marketing K.C. Lo: "With many successful years of experience in the umbrella industry, we have the know-how to make leading products. We also have our own design team and are open to new ideas."

Minimum order is 1,000 pieces, for delivery 45 days after confirmation. Kwong Hing has four factories on the Chinese mainland employing about 3,000 workers. Three of these factories are ISO 9002-certified.

Ten-year-old Laserfund Umbrella Fty Ltd produces a variety of men's, women's and children's umbrellas for both dry and wet conditions, as well as beach umbrellas, which can all be branded for promotional purposes. One of its key customers is Disney.

The company's main export markets are the Chinese mainland, the US, Japan and Europe. It delivers in 25-35 days, with no minimum order required. Laserfund's total production capacity is more than 300,000 dozen pieces per year. Prices are available upon request.
Established in 1987, Ming Hing Umbrella (HK) Co Ltd offers automatic and manual umbrellas, super mini folding umbrellas and beach umbrellas under OEM terms. "Our umbrellas feature attention to detail and we understand the market. All the design ideas are generated by customers," explains company representative Finland Chan.
Prices depend on order size and printing requirements. A 23-inch manual straight umbrella, for example, with a wooden shaft, wooden crook handle and transform printing sells for US$2.60 FOB Hong Kong.
Minimum order is 300 dozen pieces, and delivery takes place 30 days after order confirmation. Ming Hing exports mainly to Europe and Japan. It can produce 80,000 dozen umbrellas a month.
Rainbow Umbrella Mfg (HK) Ltd has been manufacturing all types of umbrellas under OEM terms since 1986. Says manager Cynthia Li: "We are successful in the industry largely due to a combination of price and quality. We can do many of the processes ourselves, enabling us to control costs."
Minimum order is 200 dozen pieces per style. Delivery time to Rainbow's main markets of South America, the US, Europe, Africa and Japan is 45 days. The company has factories in Shenzhen and Fuijian on the Chinese mainland.

From Tai Wah Umbrella Industry (HK) Co Ltd comes a fun and colourful range of umbrellas made for OEM clients. Models include a bright-yellow duck-style umbrella, complete with a red beak, and a double-shafted lovers' umbrella.

Established in 1980, the company exports to the US, Europe and Asia. Production, which takes place in factories in Shenzhen and Fuijian, employing 1,200 workers, can reach a million pieces a month. Minimum order is 200 dozen pieces per style for delivery 40 days after order confirmation.
Although established only in 1998, World Trade Enterprises Co has made a colourful impact on the market. Its range is largely used for promotional purposes. The line of golf umbrellas is proving popular. "Our colourful designs are a combination of OEM clients' ideas and in-house experimentation to see what colour combinations look the most appealing," explains sales executive George Zian.

Prices vary from US$2.50 for a 24-inch square model in black and red, to US$3.60 for a multi-coloured, 30-inch, 16-panel golf umbrella. These FOB Hong Kong prices are based on an order of 500 dozen pieces.

Zian believes that World Trade's success is also due to its policy of requiring no minimum order, delivering in 1-2 weeks and giving free samples. The company exports to Europe and Japan and can produce more than 80,000 umbrellas a month.

THE design trends for stationery sets are never stationary. Companies are using different materials to set their products apart, employing the cool look of metal and the natural warmth of wood. Simplicity reigns supreme, and the interplay of colours gives users a visual break from the monotony of deskwork.

Joyas Mfg Ltd has launched a stylish stationery set, which includes a memo pad and alarm clock in a design that plays up the beauty of simplicity and curves. Marketing director Polly Chan says the items, part of the Artemis collection, are made of zinc alloy from Australia.

Manufacturing for the top end of the market, Joyas produces other stationery articles such as rulers, pens, card holders, letter openers, ink bottles, bookmarks and paper clips. "They are mostly executive desktop items," Chan says, adding that any combination can make up a set. "Depending on the combination required by the customer, a stationery set can be as simple as a writing pad plus a pen, or a clock, or a photo frame - you name it," she says.

Apart from zinc alloy, Joyas also uses brass, steel, wood and plastic for its stationery products. FOB Hong Kong prices vary widely, from about US$8 to more than US$30 per set.

"We do the designing ourselves. We are engaged in every production process, starting from the import of raw materials." Production takes place at Joyas's 120,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland, employing more than 800 workers.

Chan says the company, which has in-house designers but also subcontracts to overseas design houses, is closely monitoring design trends. "We want to convey the message that Hong Kong manufacturers can also do design," she says.

Using the brand name Joyas, the ISO 9001-certified company exports mainly to the US and Europe, including Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. It requires a minimum order value of US$6,500 per shipment and delivers about 35 days after order confirmation, depending on the quantity.

Winner Mfy Ltd targets the midrange-to-high-end stationery market. A zinc-alloy-and-wood stationery set comprises a pen holder, pen, name card holder, blotter, letter opener and key holder.
Another set combines zinc alloy and acrylic resin and consists of a quartz desk clock, letter opener, pen holder, pen and key holder. The combination of the metal's silver colour, the wood's reddish-brown hue and the acrylic resin's blue gives users a refreshing visual break in a work environment.
General manager Richard Luk says other metals used for the production of stationery sets include copper, brass and aluminium from different countries such as Australia. "Prices for our stationery sets range from US$7-60 per set FOB Hong Kong," Luk says. Minimum order is 500 sets, and lead time is about 30 days.

Winner has in-house designers but also works to buyers' designs. "We maintain high quality, and we've been around for some time," Luk says of the 22-year-old company.

Exporting mainly to the US, Winner runs a total of 20 factories in Shenzhen, which have a combined workforce of some 10,000 workers during peak seasons.

Producing for the midrange-to-lower-end market, Hui Hua Co Ltd prides itself on its rosewood collection, which includes letter trays, memo trays, clip holders, ball pens and pen holders. The firm also has items made of maple wood, such as name card holders. The stationery products can be sold individually or as a set.
"Our designs are simple. We use wood because it gives a natural look," says export manager Martin Tsang.
Hui Hua imports rosewood from South Africa and maple from the US. A typical stationery set is priced at US$9-12 FOB Hong Kong.

Minimum order is 500 sets, for delivery in 30 days. The six-year-old company sells mainly to the US, Canada and Europe. Its factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland occupies more than 10,000 square feet and is staffed by 200 workers.

P.M.P. Industrial Ltd specializes in midrange stationery items, priced from US$1.50-8 per set FOB Hong Kong. Among its open lines are desk organizers, which hold assorted stationery supplies such as pens, pencils, erasers, scissors, staplers, adhesive tapes, paper clips and pins. The organizers can come with or without the supplies.

"The desk organizers are made of GPPS, which comes from Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong," says marketing manager Brian Yu. The products come in different colours.

The company markets its open lines under the PMP brand name. It also takes OEM orders. P.M.P. Industrial exports primarily to Europe, including Germany, Italy and France.

Set up in 1989, the company runs a factory in Dongguan with 750 workers. Minimum order is 10 cartons per set per colour. Delivery takes 45-60 days.
