Lee Handerson (HK) Ltd finds that investing in R&D pays handsome dividends in terms of winners like its clocks
An enterprising Hong Kong manufacturer has found that investing in R&D and producing attractive electronic multifunction items for daily life pays handsome dividends.

"All products are our original designs," says Lee Handerson (HK) Ltd Managing Director Homer Lee. "We have been in the business for some 33 years, and we are well known as an original designer of products with impressive concepts and features."

An early product line was electronic calculators with different functions, such as the dietary calculator. "We gradually built up our range, and now have a wide selection of health-related models available," adds Mr Lee.

In 1996, Lee Handerson introduced its one-touch currency calculator. "We were already selling ordinary currency converters and, when the Euro currency was introduced, decided to convert the usual three-button model to a single push-button type," Mr Lee claims.

In terms of clocks, Mr Lee claims that the firm's Chameleon Clock was the forerunner of the modern-day "mood-light" clock. The firm was also a pioneer in Hong Kong, combining clocks with in-demand features such as mood lights and colour-changing light clocks.

"We also offer radio-controlled clocks [RCC]. These models receive signals from an observatory or government institution to automatically synchronise the time," he says.

"In 2007, we brought out the Sunrise Clock, which has a pre-alarm lighting up function and many natural sounds as alarms. These types of clocks quickly find favour in the market because their operation resonates with the mood for a better environment and personal life enhancements."

The firm continues to research and add more functions, such as one that allows the Sunrise Clock to commence lighting up about 5-25 minutes before the set alarm time.

"This pre-alarm lighting mood function is a major selling point right now, and the clock is a hot-selling item," Mr Lee smiles.

Other optional features include very bright white light or quieter colours. "We also have new sounds of the sea, birds and even rainfall. One special sound is the heartbeat, which can be used to soothe a crying baby and even help it to fall asleep," he adds.

"For this summer we have a Sunrise Clock that projects different hues of light on to a wall. For a young person's bedroom you can choose pink, or for a sitting room you might choose a green or soft blue, to make the environment feel comfortable, according to your mood. You can also have colour-changing lights in sequence."

A 'stars in the sky' model uses a light source to project pinpoints of light onto a ceiling. "We use LEDs and can produce interesting sequential lighting characteristics, and the batteries last for more than 100 hours."

Lee Handerson has a range of pharmaceutical products, such as its cardiovascular risk calculators, fat checkers, pulse monitors and pedometers. "Our one-touch pill timer is very popular," Mr Lee describes.

He states that Lee Handerson is also releasing more environmentally friendly and energy-saving products.

It is commitment to R&D such as that demonstrated by Lee Handerson that ensures Hong Kong's success.
