Silver Gifts(HKTDC Gifts, Premium & Stationery, Vol 02,2006)

Thanks to its brilliant white metallic lustre that can take a high degree of polish, silver has long been a popular choice for jewellery and silverware.
Add the fact it is vastly more affordable than gold and it's little wonder that silver-plated gifts remain perennially popular choices worldwide.
The myriad of Hong Kong companies experienced in supplying premium silver giftware include Kei Fung Metalware Mfy Co Ltd, which was founded in 1977.
Manufacturing an extensive range of more than 600 products that includes trays, dishes, candleholders and premium gifts, Kei Fung operates an 80,000-square-foot, 300-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.
"Silver-plated tea-light candleholders are among our most popular items and cost US$1.50 per pair FOB Hong Kong," export manager Lawrence Yeung advises, adding that the factory produced more than 15 million items in 2005 using iron imported from Japan as a base metal.
Kei Fung exports minimum orders consisting of either US$2,500 in order value or 10 cartons per item to the EU, the US, the Middle East and South America, with delivery normally 30 days after receipt of a letter of credit.
Equally prolific is 14-year-old Sky Pool Industries Ltd, whose product range includes handy hip flasks and stylish silver-plated trays and bowls, all finished with various elegant designs and patterns.
"Our model number 1032S-J round tray with dot edge costs US$3.20 per piece, while model number 1061S-L with a wavy edge sells for US$3.80 each, both prices FOB Hong Kong," explains managing executive Patty Leung.
Sky Pool utilises stainless steel, brass, iron and zinc alloy from Japan, Korea and Australia at its 200-worker mainland factory in Dongguan, which exports to Europe and the US. "We have more than 100 OEM customers," Leung adds. "Our minimum order is 10 cartons containing 24 items per carton, which are delivered 45 days after order confirmation."
Specialising in producing classic-looking items with a modern twist is Chun Kei Ltd, whose silversmiths have more than a decade's experience in enhancing base metals such as zinc alloy and aluminium alloy. "Many of our products can be scaled up or down in size in order to satisfy buyer requirements," explains manager Serina Kwong.
The 12-year-old company manufactures a wide range of silver products including premium gifts, candleholders, tableware and jewellery boxes at its 450-worker factory in Dongguan.
"We export minimum orders of 360 pieces per item to the US, Europe, Egypt, the UAE, Australia and Japan 30-45 days after receiving a confirmed order," Kwong advises.
One unusual product offered by Woo Fung Metal Mfy is the Block Bank, a money box decorated with fun motifs and letters that costs US$3.10 per piece FOB Hong Kong and complements classic baby gifts like brushes, spoons and tooth boxes.
The 36-year-old company manufactures silver-plated ladies' products, jewellery boxes, photo frames, tableware, wine and cigar products and candleholders at its 350-worker, ISO 9000-certified factory in Dongguan.
"Our main export markets are the UK and the US," marketing manager Kenneth Wong reports. "We require minimum orders of 1,000 pieces per set for delivery 45-60 days after order confirmation."
Sterling silver fashion jewellery is the forte of Super Star Jewellery Ltd, whose brooches, rings and earrings with sparkling synthetic stones and cubic zirconia bear the company's Aristar brand.
The 13-year-old company exports to Europe, the US, the Middle East and the mainland, and requires minimum order values of US$5,000. "However, subject to a US$200 administration fee we will manufacture up to 30 samples made to customer requirements," marketing and administrative officer Sherri Lam confides. "The fee is fully credited against the first order."
Super Star, which manufactures at a three-floor, 400-worker factory in Haifeng on the mainland, delivers 4-6 weeks after receipt of an order with payment.
Another company that has recognised the value of brand development is Golden Brilliant Creative Mft Co, whose 925 sterling silver fashion jewellery carries the Jinmibo brand.
Typical of the 21-year-old company's current offerings are stylish sterling silver rings, sets and earrings that are steady sellers in such key markets as the US, Europe and South America.
"We manufacture at a 15,000-square-foot, 800-worker factory in Shenzhen on the mainland, which produces minimum orders worth US$2,000 for delivery 35-45 days after order confirmation," explains sales manager Michael Yeung.
Spreading its net wider is Hunter Group Ltd, which has built a thriving business exporting gift and premium products to more than 40 countries worldwide since it was founded in 1978.
The 28-year-old company has its own Hunter Silver brand and manufactures 2,000-unit minimum orders at its 1,000-worker, ISO 9001-certified factory in Dongguan.
"We have recently added the Monisa range of ladies' jewellery boxes to our collection, and we expect it to be a big seller in our major markets -
Europe, the US and Japan," says director Vincent Yeung.
Quality, service and value are obviously the key ingredients that will ensure that Hong Kong's silver gift industry continues to sparkle and shine for many years to come.
