ALTHOUGH many companies in Hong Kong have moved production out to low cost centres such as the Chinese mainland, Star Industrial Co Ltd is committed to remaining in Hong Kong.
"We insist on staying in Hong Kong in order to maintain our high standard in quality and styles," says assistant marketing manager Veronica Leung.
Founded in 1949 with 12 employees, Star started out as a brush manufacturer. Today, it has grown into the largest plastics manufacturer in Hong Kong, consuming one million pounds of first-grade virgin resins a month. The company now has 250 employees and 250,000 square feet of factory space. Its products are recognized throughout the region under its "Red-A" brand name.
Star manufactures more than 500 stocked items including houseware, kitchenware, microwave cookware, tableware, furniture, heavy-duty containers, lamp/lighting fixtures, medicine bottles, storage items and stationery items. Clients can select from a variety of patterns to customize the look of their chosen products or they can design their own. Imprinting methods include silk-screening and hot stamping.
Leung notes the company also has customized production capabilities and welcomes clients with their own designs. On average it can produce a customized mould in about 90 days depending on the complexity of the product. In addition, customized packaging services are also offered.
As a part of Star's commitment to quality, Leung points out that many of its products are manufactured in compliance with widely recognized industry health and safety standards. For example, says Leung, "All items that come into contact with food meet the FDA requirements of the US and use 100% virgin raw materials, and our baby products comply to ASTM standards."
The export market is an important part of Star's business: the firm counts export companies and trading partners among its more than 700 clients. Leung believes the US should be one of its most promising regions of growth. A sales office in New York has been set up to support that market.
In addition to a skilled workforce, computerized design and manufacturing processes and high quality imported manufacturing equipment are used to ensure product quality. The mould design departments use CAD/CAE/CAM technology and EDM processes are used in manufacturing to realize exacting tolerances.
Production is facilitated through 14 blow moulding machines and 75 injection moulding machines. The blow moulding machines are imported from Germany and Japan with 5-100 litre capacities, using parison control for uniform wall thickness. The injection moulding machines weigh from 10-1,300 tonnes with 15-100 MT clamping force.
In addition to a commitment to quality, Leung says the company is also committed to the environment. Machinery is well maintained to reduce noise and equipped with oil filters to reduce waste of engine oil. Welding is performed without the use of toxic chemicals and spurs are recycled or sold.
As for the future, Leung says the company will continue to focus on quality instead of low prices and concentrate on creating added value for customers through innovative designs.
