Best-Kept Memories

Chu Kwun Kee Metal Mfy Ltd's zinc alloy and epoxy photo frames decorated with floral-theme borders create a feminine feel

Valuable memories are best captured by photographs, and Hong Kong manufacturers excel at accentuating them in a wide assortment of picture frames and albums for safe keeping.

Tung San Metal Works Fty Ltd, founded in 1970, diversified out of imitation jewellery into photo frames five years ago, transferring its experience and expertise onto frame designs jazzed up with enamel and crystals.

The company has an established customer base in Europe and US. "Our workmanship is of high quality thanks to our prior technical skills in handling enamel and crystal," says assistant marketing manager Simond Lee. "However, our prices are very competitive as we buy stones in bulk to use in our jewellery production as well."

Among the company's latest items are zinc alloy frames encrusted with jet and topaz at US$1.83 each, and zinc alloy frames with crystal and epoxy at US$2.40 each. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

"We have a highly computerised system which empowers us to deliver the first sample in just one week, and bulk delivery within 30-45 days," says Lee.

The zinc alloy is from Australia, the crystals from Austria and the enamel from the US. Production takes place at an ISO 9002-certified, 400,000-square-foot factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland. Monthly production peaks at 200,000 photo frames, and the company requires a minimum order value of US$5,000.

Specialising in anodised aluminium photo frames is Asia Trading Co, established in 1969. Best-selling items include musical, aluminium photo frames with wind-up knobs, and a host of frames combining aluminium with leather, polyresin and MDF (medium density fibre).

The company sells to the US, Canada, Spain, Italy and the UK. It also successfully launched its own 21st Century brand about 10 years ago, and the name denotes the company's quest for innovative designs and quality.

"Customer service is also important to us," says senior marketing executive Fiona Kwong. "We work closely with buyers to ensure they get their opinion voiced and that we understand their needs," she says.

Raw material imports include anodised aluminium, and genuine and bonded leather from the US, Germany and Italy. Production takes place at a 350,000-square-foot, 1,300-worker factory in Guangdong Province and peaks at two million frames a month. The minimum order quantity is 1,000 frames per model for delivery 30-45 days after order confirmation.

Meanwhile, set up in 1981, Patrick Mfg Ltd has established buyers in Europe and the US for its PVC photo frames available in a variety of vivid designs and colours.

According to marketing executive Catherine Chan, the company's creative effort is very effective in drawing new buyers. "We offer at least 30-40 new designs for the three holiday seasons - Easter, Halloween and Christmas. Also, when we attend trade fairs we create more than 100 designs to display," she says.

Among this maker's latest products, the colourful 2R-size magnetic photo frames series, priced at US$0.42 each FOB Hong Kong, attracts a lot of attention.

"Apart from creativity, good prices and excellent quality are also our strengths. We also stress competent customer services, and are especially keen with after-sales follow-up to obtain customer response as to further improvements we could make," says Chan.

The company imports PVC from Japan and South Korea and production takes place at a 110,000-square-foot, 600-worker factory in Guangdong Province. The monthly capacity is approximately 1.4 million frames. The minimum order is 5,000 pieces for shipment 3-4 weeks after order confirmation.

Chu Kwun Kee Metal Mfy Ltd, founded in 1963, offers photo albums and photo frames made from metal, wood, steel, brass and aluminium. Besides its own CKK-branded products, the company also accepts OEM and ODM. Customers can choose from among 200 new and original designs each year.

Marketing executive Chris Law says metal frames decorated with stones and crystals are popular. "Our latest zinc alloy and epoxy frames with a foliage design, and albums with crystal, are really classic in appearance and very elegant," he assures.

Production takes place at a one-million-square foot factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland employing 3,000 skilled workers and producing up to three million frames a month. The plant acquired ISO 9001 certification in 1999.

"We target the middle-to-high market range, with North America taking 60% of the production and Europe the balance," says Law.

He says it is difficult to provide prices for specific products as they vary according to the materials used, the design detail and the quantity. "But we welcome enquiries and are very flexible with the minimum order quantity," he adds.

The company sources steel and zinc from South Korea and Japan, while wood and plastic come from elsewhere in Asia. Delivery is 45-60 days after order confirmation.
