Cookware Sets

BUYERS of cookware no longer simply choose between a big pot and a small saucepan. Hong Kong manufacturers are spoiling cooks around the world by turning out cookware in a wide choice of combinations, materials and coatings that cater to every need.

Supor (HK) Co Ltd, an eight-year-old manufacturer of traditional and electrical cookware, uses aluminium as its main material.

Unlike most companies, which manufacture out of Guangdong Province, in the southern Chinese mainland, Supor has its factory in the east coast province of Zhejiang. "Most of our materials come from this region, so it was natural for us to build our factory there," says sales executive Maggie Chen.

The factory covers 333,000 square metres and employs 2,200 workers who produce 1.6 million items a month. It was awarded ISO 9002 certification in 1997.

Supor's seven-piece aluminium hard-anodized cookware set (TG7-1) includes 16cm and 18cm saucepans, a 24cm casserole dish and a 24cm frying pan. An anodized set is US$27 FOB Hong Kong, while a non-stick set costs US$30.

"Glass is another material we pay attention to," adds Chen. The glass lids of the saucepans and casserole dish in the anodized set, for example, are 4mm thick.

The items are packaged in four-colour printed boxes. Minimum order is one FEU, with a delivery time of 45 days.

Silver Star Int'l Ltd, a manufacturer of stainless steel, non-stick and hard-anodized cookware, exports to the US, Europe and Asia. It is also targeting South America. "Our aim is to let 10% of our sales go to this market," says general manager Lorren Li. "One of our advantages is we are able to produce for low-end, mid-range and high-end markets."

Model JE-2QT-PAN-WL is an 18cm, non-stick, hard-anodized saucepan priced at US$6.83 FOB Huangpu. Model JE-10-FP-WL is a 24cm, non-stick, hard-anodized frying pan with lid, selling for US$9.09. A 30cm model (JE-12-FP-OL) without lid is priced at US$7.73. Rounding off the set are model JE-8-QI-STE-SET, a steamer unit priced at US$7.49, and model JE-10-CASS, a 24cm casserole dish priced at US$5.53.

Packaging is in a four-colour printed box. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces per item, with delivery in 35 days.

"By June, we will also start manufacturing tri-ply cookware - stainless steel cookware with aluminium inside," says Li.

Monthly production at Silver Star's two factories in Guangdong Province, totalling 11,000 square metres with 700 workers, amounts to 700 pieces per item.

Creating fashionable designs is how GSW (Hong Kong) Ltd attempts to stay ahead of its competitors. Its product range features all types of stainless steel cookware.

Its 11-piece, stainless steel Titanic fondue set (838108), which includes a fondue pot, glass lid, protection cover, stand, burner and six fondue forks, costs US$15 FOB Guangzhou. A 10-piece set (838115) is priced at US$6.40. Both sets feature capsule bottoms.

"We concentrate on the exterior, so our pots have a body thickness of 0.5mm stainless steel - heavier than most," says general manager Johnny Ng. The stainless steel is sourced from South Korea.

Fancy designs naturally drive up the price, but GSW, which targets mainly the high-end market in Germany, controls costs by outsourcing manufacturing. "We outsource to about five different factories. This way we don't have to worry about hiring labourers," says Ng.

Monthly production totals 15,000-20,000 pieces. Minimum order is one TEU, and delivery takes 45-60 days.

Cirlite Ltd, which has been manufacturing houseware and bathroom accessories for 20 years, stays ahead by keeping a sharp eye on quality control. "Each of our quality controllers is professionally trained in the production process, as well as the materials," says marketing executive Jack Chan.

Cirlite has an 8,000-square-metre factory in Guangdong Province, which employs 120 workers. It uses primarily stainless steel from Japan for its designs. Monthly production amounts to five FEUs per item.

Included in Cirlite's stainless steel range are a dishwasher-safe roaster pan (EA9005), priced at US$10.95 FOB Hong Kong; multifunction pot (EA2012), at US$13.95; fondue set (AA1248), at US$6.95; and butter warmer (AA1121), at US$2.50. All models are packaged in a colour gift box or, for mail-order customers, a mail-order box.

Main markets are the US, the UK and Germany, but Chan says the firm is looking to expand to Eastern Europe and Japan. Minimum order is one TEU, for delivery in 45-60 days.

The Way To Weigh

Scales

THE humble scale is now an ubiquitous item in many households around the world, indispensable in the bathroom, kitchen or home office. The heavyweights and light hands in Hong Kong's manufacturing industry together offer an extensive selection of scales. All the models mentioned come with gift boxes, which are included in the prices quoted.

Among the eye-catching mechanical scales from Q.C.V. Co Ltd is a tomato-shaped model (QS-1001), brightly coloured in red, green and apple green. "It's for household use. It can be used to weigh anything no heavier than one kilo," says general manager Sylvia So.

The manufacturer makes an array of mechanical kitchen scales with various shapes, colours and weighing limits. It also supplies letter scales for office use.

"Our scales have cute shapes," So says. The products are made with plastics such as ABS and PP from Taiwan. "We design most of our products. We can also do OEM."

Q.C.V. requires a minimum order of 1,000 units and delivers within 35 days after order confirmation. It sells mainly to Italy, Spain, South Africa, the US, Japan and the UK.

Established in 1990, the company makes 150,000 mechanical scales per month at its 200-worker factory in Dongguan, on the Chinese mainland.

Five-year-old V-Care Development Ltd produces an assortment of electronic scales, including an electronic kitchen scale with a circular tempered-glass platform (VC-10310). Powered by four AAA batteries, it can be used to weigh food or cooking ingredients. The item sells for US$14 FOB Hong Kong, based on the minimum order of 2,000 units.

An electronic nutritional kitchen scale (VC-10102) operates on four AA batteries and is priced at US$18, based on a 2,000-unit order. "It is for measuring the nutritional values of food, such as calories and cholesterol content," says company director Horace Chung.

Besides kitchen scales, V-Care has launched an electronic pocket scale (VC-10500), which is small enough to fit in a pocket. "It is for weighing smaller items, such as diamonds," Chung explains. The product, powered by two lithium batteries, is priced at US$25, based on an order of 2,000 units.

The scales are made with ABS, electronic components and load cells from Southeast Asia and the Chinese mainland. The firm runs a 2,400-square-metre factory in Shenzhen, on the mainland, employing 180 workers.

V-Care scales, which are "household-oriented", are priced at US$8-25 each, according to Chung. Delivery takes 35-45 days after order confirmation. The company sells mainly to Germany and the US.

Parkco Houseware Ltd offers a range of mechanical kitchen scales, such as a frosted round scale (M212) in yellow, light pink, dark blue, light blue, light orange, dark orange, light green or dark green. The scale can weigh cooking ingredients up to 2kg or 4.5lbs. "It is made with frosted plastic," says project engineer Alex Ching. The item sells for US$2.40 FOB Hong Kong.

A frosted scale with a transparent jug (M318) can be used for substances weighing up to 3kg or 6.5lbs. The scale is available in dark orange, white, light pink, dark green, dark blue or yellow. "The jug is made of plastic, while the base is made of frosted plastic," Ching says.

Parkco uses PP, HIPS and HPPS from the Chinese mainland and manufactures about 20,000 kitchen scales per month at its 100-worker factory in Dongguan. Set up in 1997, it requires a minimum order of 3,000 units and delivers in 35-45 days. Parkco counts Europe as its biggest market, especially Italy and France, but it also sells to the US.

One of Hong Kong's biggest scale manufacturers, Fook Tin Plastic Fty Ltd supplies a vast range of electronic scales. "Our products range from the consumer class to the semi-professional class," says export manager Holly Au. "The consumer line includes bathroom, kitchen and baby scales. The semi-professional scales measure weight to greater precision."

Among the company's latest designs are electronic bathroom scales with body fat analyzer, priced at US$27.71-31.14 each FOB Hong Kong, based on the minimum order of 1,000 units. Users input their height, age and gender, after which the scales will measure both weight and body fat. One model, FS-060, has won a local industrial award and can weigh a person of up to 140kg.

Fook Tin makes scales with plastics, metal parts and electronic components from various sources, including South Korea and Taiwan. "We design our products. We also take OEM orders," Au says.

The company delivers within 60-90 days after order confirmation. Its key markets are Europe and the US. Founded in 1963, this ISO 9001-certified firm operates a 20,000-square-foot, 1,000-worker factory in Shenzhen.

Tidy Up

Storage Items

DURABLE, inexpensive storage units that keep garments tidy and dust-free or otherwise help minimise clutter are just the thing for keeping everyone a bit more organised. And when they look as good as the models made by Hong Kong manufacturers, so much the better.

Transparent air-tight containers that are perfect for keeping moisture away from food or items such as camcorders or cameras are a top seller at Star Industrial Co Ltd. "An O-ring seals in the air," explains assistant marketing manager Veronica Leung.

Made of acrylonitrile, the containers are available in four sizes, from 170x115x172mm to 360x280x230mm. The units are priced at US$3.49-11.04 per piece FOB Hong Kong. All four containers can be nested together to save space when not in use.

For bigger jobs, the company's translucent PP storage containers can handle toys, clothes or tools. The containers come in seven sizes, from 483x380x224mm to 570x415x412mm, priced at US$5.83-9.83. Carrying handles made of PP double as lid locks.

"These are our standard sizes, but we can do any colour or size a customer wants," Leung says.

Minimum order is five cartons for items in stock, with larger quantities required for custom orders. Delivery depends on order size.

Star Industrial has been in business since 1949 and makes plastic houseware, microwave cookware and kitchenware. All manufacturing takes place in Hong Kong at the company's 250,000-square-foot, 300-worker production facility. The company exports to the US, Canada and Europe.

Frosted white or blue PP storage boxes with nickel handles and trim from Eastcross Int'l Ltd are popular in Europe and Japan, with silver frosted units coming on strong.

Eastcross offers several hundred storage box sizes and models for home or office, all made of PP, from small business-card holders to one-square-metre-sized units. Prices range from US$0.10 to US$11 for a five-piece set, FOB Hong Kong.

Foldable boxes have been especially in demand because of their space-saving qualities. "They're easy to ship and pack, and they save on sea freight charges," says manager Dickson Siu. Foldable boxes are available in sizes from 30x22.5x13.5cm to 16x28x14cm, priced at US$0.70-1.50 per piece.

Eastcross makes plain boxes, as well as two- or three-drawer units, magazine holders, CD holders and trash cans. Most customers choose from the company's existing stock, but about 30% of orders are designed to meet individual specifications.

A US$6,000 minimum order is required, with delivery 45 days after order confirmation. All production at the nine-year-old firm is carried out at its 9,000-square-metre factory in Shantou, on the Chinese mainland. Besides PP, customers may also order cardboard storage containers.

Hurricane Int'l Ltd's soft PEVA and PE underbed chest is handy for storing clothes and bedding. A large zippered opening makes packing easy. The seven-year-old company makes a standard 100x45x15cm unit with 0.1mm thickness for US$0.60 per piece FOB Hong Kong, but can accommodate any size or shape that a customer requests.

"About 70% of our customers use our standard size, and the rest give us their specifications," says marketing manager Keith Chan.

A foldable, 0.12mm-thick PEVA design wardrobe has a hard plastic base and fibreboard inserts. It measures 135x76x51cm and costs US$7 per piece. "It's ideal for camping or dorm rooms and can be carried from place to place," Chan adds.

Hurricane's 300,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan, on the Chinese mainland, turns out 200,000 underbed chests and 20,000-30,000 design wardrobes per month. Printing graphic designs on the units is one of the company's strengths, and suggestions are welcome.

Minimum orders range from 3,000-10,000 pieces, depending on the item. Shipments are sent on their way 30 days after order confirmation. The company's main export markets are Germany, the UK and the US.

Witex Industrial Co's foldable PP storage boxes have a fabric-like look and come in small, medium and large standard sizes, with prices from US$2.19-2.66 per piece FOB Hong Kong. The smallest measures 22.5x36x44cm and the largest 26x40x50cm.

"The boxes are light and durable. We can do any size or surface pattern that a customer wants," says Maria Mak, marketing executive at the 12-year-old company. A cut-out section with a fitted PVC window allows for a quick check of the contents inside. Snap buttons let the box fold flat in seconds.

Witex also manufactures PP mesh wardrobes for US$6-11 each. Smaller PP mesh storage bags for shoes and other items sell for US$5-9 per piece.

Minimum order is 3,000 pieces. All items are produced at the company's three-storey factory in Shenzhen, on the Chinese mainland, and exported mainly to Europe and Japan. Customers can expect delivery 4-6 weeks after order confirmation.
