Garden Furniture

Tin Fung (China) Enterprises Co uses polyresin, metal and ceramic mosaics to make elegant garden furniture and decorations.

THE home garden is a peaceful, relaxing place and makers of garden furniture are improving the atmosphere of this outdoor retreat with increased styling in their products. From Victorian flourish to modern sleek, garden furniture beckons weary workers from living rooms and lounges to terraces and gardens.

"Fashion-forward designs are our primary focus at Boli Co Ltd," says manager Farrah Chan. "Reasonable prices are also very important."

Established in 1997, Boli exports steel and aluminium welded and folding furniture to the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia. High style is paramount and "most designs are created in-house", says Chan. OEM is a business option.

FOB Hong Kong prices range from US$3 to US$70. Annual production at Boli's 1,000-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland is about 10,000 TEUs.

Raw materials are sourced globally: steel from South Africa, Thailand and the Chinese mainland; aluminium from Australia; plastics from Japan and the US; and fabrics from Taiwan and the US.

Victorian grace best describes the garden furniture from Janton Enterprises Ltd, where delicate designs belie the substance of the materials. General manager Savio Chan says this balance is exactly the point: "The home furnishing business is full of contradictions: it is conservative and creative, long-lasting but changing all the time."

Janton's creations include wicker sofa sets and chairs, synthetic wicker and rattan dining sets and bedroom furnishings, wood-frame and wicker combinations, aluminium-frame outdoor furnishings, and wrought iron/wicker combinations.

Most designs are customized and an in-house design team is available to provide support. OEM arrangements are an option, because as Chan says, "We do our best to meet and fulfil all requests from our customers."

Wicker processing takes place in Nanhai in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland; other production takes place in Jiangmen, also in Guangdong Province. Annual output is 150-200 FEUs.

Janton sources raw materials from the mainland, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. Major export markets include North America.

Chan would like to expand Janton's presence in Central America and Western Europe, bringing style and leisure to gardens and terraces near and far. He says that the customer's enjoyment is Janton's focus. "We use our inspiration and imagination to create new designs for a harmonious home."

Colour is a significant design element at Rich Pacific Ltd, which merges elegant metallic designs with the pizzazz of colour in styling that reflects its 12 years' experience in garden furniture and decoration production.

Manager Vincent Cheng says most of Rich Pacific's fashionable designs are created in-house using metal sourced from the Chinese mainland. Production takes place at its factory in Xiamen. Some designs are OEM.

Rich Pacific exports primarily to Europe and the US, with shipment taking about 45 days following order confirmation.

Custom designs are at the forefront at Tin Fung (China) Enterprises Ltd, where manager Pao Kei says the focus is on ensuring that customers are completely satisfied with finished products.

Using polyresin, metal and ceramic mosaics, the in-house design team at Tin Fung specializes in elegant garden furniture and playful decorations, including water fountains, stepping stones, animal statues and inorganic "rocks".

More than 80% of the business is focused on garden decorations, with the remainder being seasonal garden and tabletop items. Pao says that designs number "in the thousands" and OEM requests are welcomed.

All production materials are sourced on the Chinese mainland and manufacture takes place at the company's 5,000-square-metre factory in Fujian Province.

Export destinations include Australia, the US, Germany, France and the UK. FOB Hong Kong prices for simple tables begin at about US$30 and for chairs at US$15.

Style is of high importance at plastic garden furniture manufacturer Lain Fung Int'l (HK) Ltd, according to managing director Fung Wai-hung. He adds that new designs are incorporated regularly. "Our polypropylene designs are as detailed and intricate as seen in heavier metal counterparts and our self-assembly keeps prices low."

Lain Fung uses a one-piece injection moulding process. "We are very different from other manufacturers. Our furniture is in classic European styles and in knockdown form. Customers can choose from three colours and seven sizes and designs," says Fung.

The company's table and chairs feature curved legs and lace patterns that extend to the tabletop, thus proving that lightweight materials can handle powerful styling. FOB Hong Kong prices range from US$6 to US$23 per piece.

"Customers are our kings!" says Fung, who accepts large and small orders and welcomes OEM arrangements. Lain Fung's factory is in Zhejiang Province on the Chinese mainland.

Fung also believes colour plays an important role and says that white and green are very popular in North America and Europe. Metallic bronze is in demand in the Middle East. Other markets include Central America, Taiwan, India and Australia.

In addition to garden furniture, Lain Fung produces vacuum flasks, which are exported to Nigeria, Ghana and Benin.

Music Mate

CD Racks & Cabinets

AC or battery-operated motorized CD towers from Daka Development Ltd can be connected to hold up to 225 CDs.

EFFICIENT storage is essential, given the lack of space in many households. Hong Kong companies produce a wide range of CD racks and cabinets to suit all needs and tastes and in keeping with the latest designs.

Daka Development Ltd, founded in 1993, has a 600-worker factory on the Chinese mainland producing its ROLODISCTM CD tower. Up to three of these motorized units can be connected to store 225 discs. The tower, which has an easy push-button access, is also available in a model including flashing lights that synchronize with music.

"The robot-like shape and bright colours create a fun, trendy look," says sales manager Joey Chung. The ROLODISCTM is manufactured to ISO 9001 and ISO 9002 standards and has been in production for two years.

The latest addition to Daka's range is a 100-CD tower built into an elegant wooden cabinet. "The wooden case is a more classic design," says Chung. "It also includes a built-in light so you can easily see the discs even in the dark or in low light."

Monthly production is just over 100,000 units and orders can be shipped within 45 days of order confirmation. The main markets are the US and Europe, with smaller markets in the Asia-Pacific region.

Wooden storage units for CD, DVD, game cartridges, audio and video tapes are the main focus for 16-year-old Charter Centre Co Ltd. Using wood products from Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand, its Shenzhen factory on the Chinese mainland employs more than 350 workers and produces over 200,000 units per month.

More than 100 audiovisual media storage products are available both in individual and stackable composite form. Regular additions to the line ensure that customers can choose from the latest styles. "New products are released each year - the present trend is for metallic colours and DVD storage," says marketing manager Andy Lee.

The company exports 95% of its products, mainly to Europe but also to Japan and Australia. "Each market has its own characteristics. Different styles are tailor-made for different markets," says Lee. Charter Centre also accepts OEM orders and has projects with customers in Japan and Italy. Minimum order is one TEU and production takes 30-40 days.

Established in Hong Kong in 1957, Sunhing Millennium Ltd produces a wide range of storage for CD/CDR, DVD, MD and video products, with more than 100 multimedia items under its AVEC brand. "There are two areas where we are different: our design capability which is closer to the European model and flexibility of production," explains marketing director Sam Ribet. "We have the capability to combine different materials and therefore offer a greater variety of items."

With an in-house design team and a network of in-house and freelance designers worldwide, Sunhing aims to create the highest standard of production. "We make original designs that are well thought out and of good quality," says Ribet. "We like to focus on a combination of innovative design and practicality."

Sunhing's factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland employs 1,000 workers and produces about 500,000 units per month using imported materials from different countries. These products are exported to customers in Europe, the US and Japan.

"Our products cover a broad spectrum from exclusive design to mass market," explains Ribet. "We supply big retailers worldwide such as Wal-Mart, Metro and Carrefour."

Minimum order is 500 pieces per item per colour, for shipment 30-45 days after order confirmation.

Established in Hong Kong this year, Power Speed Development Ltd has been manufacturing wooden products, including CD storage units, at its Chinese mainland factory since 1998. Seventy per cent of its wood products are designed in-house but the company is happy to accommodate requests from clients. "About 30% are produced to customers' designs but we can create a specific design for them," says marketing manager Frank Leung.

"We offer competitive pricing and good quality to attract new customers. It is very important to ship on time and follow customers' requirements."

Employing 350 workers at its 7,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, Power Speed uses raw materials obtained locally to complete orders within 40 days of confirmation.

"We use high-quality products and are very careful about quality," says Leung. Power Speed exports most products to markets such as the US, Japan, the UK and Australia.

Fook Tin Plastic is an ISO 9001-certified company established in 1963 and with production in Shenzhen. Major markets for its health-related electronics are Europe and the US.

Hong Luen Health Products Fty Ltd specializes in wooden massagers. "We have a wide range of styles. Almost all the wood is sourced from the southern Chinese mainland. Recently, we began importing wood from Canada too," says sales manager Mandy Chau.

Established nine years ago, Hong Luen Products operates a factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. The major markets are Europe, South Africa and the US.

"With monthly production of 200,000-250,000 pieces in different massager models, we can ship 30-45 days after order confirmation. Although minimum-order quantities vary from item to item, we generally require one TEU. Per-unit FOB prices for our wooden massagers range from US$0.10-2.00, depending on size and craftsmanship," Chau says.
