A 10-shelf hanging shoe organizer (left) and a six-shelf hanging sweater organizer (right) from Potter Industries Ltd are made of see-through polyester mesh to provide good air circulation.
SPACE is often a premium in many households, with consumers looking for reasonably priced and simple solutions to get rid of clutter. Since this is especially true when it comes to clothes and personal effects, Hong Kong's household manufacturers have come up with attractive and functional organizers that are almost too good to hide in the closet.
Potter Industries Ltd has been manufacturing household and home storage goods, and laundry and bathroom accessories since 1990. When making its closet organizers, the company uses see-through polyester mesh sourced from Taiwan. "Using this mesh means air can circulate freely in the organizers," explains company manager Peggy Sin.
Potter Industries produces a six-shelf hanging organizer for sweaters, model ST191/M17; a 10-shelf hanging shoe organizer, model ST190/M17; and a revolving organizer, model ST165/M17. The standard colour for this range is light grey mesh with mid-grey piping. "We are also happy to produce other colours on customer request," says Sin.
Potter Industries manufactures in its 460-worker factory in Foshan on the Chinese mainland. Delivery takes place around 30 days after an order has been confirmed, with minimum orders being 5,000 pieces per item. The company's main customers are based in Europe.
Sin feels one of the company's main strengths is its flexibility. "We concentrate on providing good customer service while delivering high quality products," she says.
Clairson (Hong Kong) Ltd specializes in innovative solutions to storage issues. In its garment-rack range, the company makes a white washable fabric deluxe portable closet with black trim, model 1095. The closet's measurements are approximately 150x96.5x15cm.
"We can custom-make this product to a client's specifications," says marketing manager Charles Choi, adding that a minimum order for customized items is generally 3,000-5,000 pieces.
The company produces at its 131,000-square-foot, 450-worker factory in Jiangmen on the Chinese mainland. Minimum order is one TEU comprising a mixture of items.
Choi says the company provides a lifetime warranty for its goods in the US, its main market. "We also have a chat centre on our Web site, where customers can provide feedback and ask questions. This has proved extremely popular," he says.
Established in 1989, Gintex Development Co Ltd makes several kinds of closet organizers and garment bags with zippers. A nylon mesh man's suit bag, model PPM217(M), costs US$2.92 each, while a similar design women's dress bag, model PPM217(L) costs US$3.98 each.
Other products include a non-woven fabric shoe tidy with PVC cover, model NW611 (0152), unit priced at US$2.45; a nylon mesh shoe tidy, model PPM431-601A, priced at US$5.55 per unit; and a nylon mesh under-bed storage bag, model PPM612, priced at US$4.38 each. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.
Marketing executive Maria Mak says there are two minimum order requirements. "These are 1,000 pieces for nylon mesh products and 1,500 pieces for non-woven items," she says. Delivery takes 4-6 weeks.
Gintex sources its non-woven fabric from the mainland, and its nylon from the mainland and Taiwan. Manufacture takes place at a 400-worker factory near Shenzhen on the mainland. Many of the company's mesh products are sold to companies in Europe, while its main non-woven markets are Japan and the US.
Mak says customers like the fancy or unusual aspects of Gintex's products, adding that these can be produced in any colour. "We offer good service and high quality items," she says.
C&L Industrial Ltd's closet organizers are made at its 400-worker factory in Dongguan on the mainland, using non-woven materials from the mainland and Taiwan.
One product, model WG-9, is a 10-layer shoe tidy measuring 17.5x33x120cm. Model WG-10 is an eight-layer shoe tidy, measuring 23x30x120cm. The company also makes a wardrobe tidy, model WG-12, with dimensions of 32x32x115cm; and hanging sweater shelves, model PD0380, measuring 25x28x122cm.
These products come in a variety of colours - the main ones are navy blue, white, burgundy and hunter green. There are three solid-coloured sides and an optional clear-zipped front for shoe tidies and shelves. Prices are US$0.80-1.60 FOB Hong Kong.
"We pride ourselves on offering a reasonable price for our products and ensuring punctual shipment," says director Terence Choi. Delivery generally takes place 35 days after orders have been confirmed. C&L's minimum order is 50 cartons per size; Choi says a carton holds between three to four dozen pieces, depending on the product.
While mainly selling to customers in the US and South America, the company's third most important market is the EU, a sector in which Choi says C&L is looking to expand its sales.
