Fun Ways To Save

Trempest Ltd offers a selection of money boxes in the shape of shoes, cars and horses made with zinc alloy from Australia and Japan

It's never too early to learn how to save, and what better way to make saving fun than with today's latest range of delightful money boxes? Always popular and the handiest of gifts, money boxes come in all shapes and sizes and with features designed to appeal to children and adults alike.

Who wouldn't be delighted with one of the 25 designs of silver-plated zinc alloy money boxes produced by Hong Kong silverware manufacturer Trempest Ltd. Manufactured at the company's 100,000-square-foot factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland, the money boxes range in style from an Alphabet Block Bank to a Horse Bank.

"We are constantly developing new items," says managing director Stephen Lam. "While other toys may lose their appeal, money boxes remain stable."

Prices range from US$1.60-3.00 plus, per piece, FOB Hong Kong. Delivery of a minimum order value of US$15,000 - for assorted styles - takes 60 days.

"Silver plate is always popular as it has a high perceived value as a gift and is ideal for events such as christenings," says Lam. He also credits product appeal to high quality die-casting, polishing and plating of materials sourced mainly from Australia.

"Our major export market is the US, making up more than 50%, but we are well covered globally," says Lam. "In the past couple of years, Eastern Europe has also opened up as a market."

Another company expanding sales is four-year-old gifts company, WWW.4M2U.COM Ltd, which produces funky and colourful items designed by the in-house team.

The popular Piggy Bank is a 7.5cm-tall polyresin pig, hand painted on the mainland in five different, bright colours depicting cheerful designs of flowers, butterflies and clouds.

"Our Piggy Bank is a collectible item and suitable for children and adults," says marketing manager Annie Lin. The Piggy Bank comes in a display set of 12, with a minimum order value of US$3,000 delivered in 30 days.

Gift products range in price from US$0.50-15.00 FOB Hong Kong, and major markets include New Zealand, Europe and Asia. Lin also feels there is room to grow sales in the US.

"We will also produce other animal designs, such as cows and dogs, while keeping to our colourful, vibrant look," Lin says.

Animals also play a major theme in the design of money boxes at Everlast Industrial Co Ltd, which for more than 30 years has specialised in manufacturing wind-up children's savings banks.

"We produce some 200 styles of wind-up money boxes, and introduce one or two new designs every month," says export manager Joey Leung. These models come in numerous cute themes, amusing animations and cheerful colours, while many also offer realistic sound and music options.

"Children's coin bank toys are our main line, and all have added features that make them particularly attractive to children aged three years and up," adds Leung.

Some 200 workers at the company's Dongguan factory on the mainland produce such delights as the wind-up Puppy House Saving Bank. Available with a sound option, this features a moving puppy which, when a coin is placed on the "press me" tray, darts out of opening doors, retrieves the coin, then scoots back inside the house.

One of Everlast's latest designs is the Lovey Dovey savings bank, featuring a young couple moving towards each other for a simple kiss.

"Our models range in price from US$10-20 per dozen FOB Hong Kong, with a minimum order of 20 dozen per item for delivery in 21-30 days," says Leung.

Another company emphasising the added features of its range of money boxes is Fantasy World Enterprises Ltd.

Assistant sales manager Crystal Hui says money boxes must move with the times to stay ahead. As an example, she mentions the company's Piggy Bank, part of the in-house Angoozie brand. "Our plush piggy is an educational toy which produces an 'oink' sound when soft money is placed in the slot," says Hui. "This appeals to children and they are also learning how to save."

A minimum order for the Piggy Bank, made of boa, felt and tricot, is 3,000 pieces at a unit cost of US$4 FOB Hong Kong. Delivery is within 45 days.

The 16-year-old company, which has an annual turnover of US$20m, also uses attractive smells to lure children's pennies. Part of Fantasy World's Wellmark brand, the Aroma Bunny box set combines a sweet-smelling toy bunny with a birthday-month-themed tin money box.

"The Aroma Bunny comes in a number of scents, including rose, peach and jasmine," says Hui, "and costs around US$1.50 per boxed set FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of 10,000 and delivery between 30-45 days."

Hui believes money boxes will never diminish in popularity, but admits Fantasy World has to add special features to keep them attractive to children around the world. "Currently, the US accounts for 70% of our market, Europe 20% and Japan the remainder," says Hui. "We are also looking at developing new European markets such as Spain, Italy, Portugal and Turkey."
