Trophies & Statues

Legacy Giftware Ltd's golfer figurine and bust display fine craftsmanship.

HONG Kong makers of statues and trophies carry on the millennia-old tradition of statue making in cooperation with skilled artisans on the Chinese mainland. Hong Kong exporters also combine modern themes and technology to produce contemporary and attractive gifts.

Legacy Giftware Ltd specializes in statues made of polyresin and fine pewter including a nine-inch golfer figurine and a bust. Set up in 1996, Legacy employs 1,200 workers at its six-storey, ISO 9002-certified factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

The company has no minimum order policy, and prices are available on request. Shipment takes place 4-6 weeks after order confirmation, and the company's main markets are the US and Japan.

Since its establishment in 1983, South China Development (HK) Ltd has supplied customers with crystal gifts and trophies. The processing and assembly of raw materials, sourced on the Chinese mainland, take place in the company's 500,000-square-foot, 1,500-worker factory in Shanghai.

South China's crystal products come either engraved or benefiting from three-dimensional laser printing. Prices range from as little as US$1 up to US$100, FOB Shanghai.

A minimum order is 100 pieces for crystal trophies and gifts with prices negotiable. The delivery schedule depends on the product and the size of the order. Major markets for this OEM manufacturer include Hong Kong, the EU, the US, New Zealand, Japan and Australia.

Giftsmax Co makes trophies and statuettes from polyresin -- including animal figurines such as a stretching giraffe and a school of dolphins -- which then undergo a final process of electroplating. The company, founded in 1996, also makes outdoor statues, fountains and photo frames.

"We were basically an electrical goods manufacturer, but have started to branch out into functional items including statuettes, thermometers, clocks and table lamps," says marketing supervisor Jean Yiu.

Prices vary greatly according to size and complexity. In the electroplated range of figurines, a small piece may cost US$2-3 while a larger item can cost US$50-60. "Our prices are FOB Hong Kong and we can negotiate depending on the item and the size of the order," says Yiu.

Giftsmax manufactures at an 11,000-square-metre factory employing 120 workers in Xiamen, Fujian Province, on the Chinese mainland. Shipment usually takes place 40 days after confirmation of order, and major markets are the EU, the US, Canada and Japan.

Another manufacturer, WIO Development Co, makes crystal trophies, gifts and premium ornaments. Production of the crystal items takes place at a 700-square-metre factory in Shanghai, which employs 50 workers.

"We chose to base our manufacturing operations in Shanghai because we had the opportunity to merge renowned and traditional Shanghai craftsmanship with modern techniques. We think we have done that successfully," says WIO's marketing manager Sophia Leung.

"We are concentrating on improving our products by using modern technology such as laser engraving and incorporating gold in our crystal products," Leung adds.

The engraving and individual gift-box packaging are included in WIO's prices for crystal products that typically range from US$27.00-37.50 based on an order for 100 per type FOB Hong Kong. Shipment is generally 45-60 days after order confirmation. WIO sells mainly in the UK, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Polyresin and wood form the black bears and wolves that feature in the figurine and trophy collection of Poly-Gift Co Ltd. "We also receive orders to make dolphins, whales and a variety of birds, all in sizes ranging from 3-12 inches," says director Edmund Cheung. "There is also demand for statues of religious personages and items such as crosses."

Cheung says that prices depend very much on the size of the item, and that production takes place at a 7,000-square-metre, 500-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. The polyresin used in the company's products is sourced from Taiwan.

Poly-Gift, founded in 1992, requires a minimum order of 1,000 piecesper item for shipment about 45 days after order confirmation. The company's major markets are the US and the EU.

A firm that specializes in making high-quality crystal gifts and trophies for major companies and event planners worldwide is BJ Crystal Hong Kong Co Ltd.

Company spokesperson Michelle Kok says BJ also chose to set up its crystalware operations in Shanghai "because in our industry Shanghai workers are renowned for their sophisticated skills".

She says prices depend on the order quantity, as well as the size and design of the items, but typically range from US$6-50. The smallest item is 40x40x40mm and the largest is 25cm high.

The basic materials arrive from sources on the Chinese mainland or in Europe, and the company manufactures under the Crystal brand name or to OEM specifications. Major markets are the US and Europe. Products are ready for shipment 3-14 days following order confirmation.
