Aromatic Gifts

Sunrise Industrial Co's aromatic products include candle burners and incense cone holders. They sell well in Europe and the US.
AROMATIC oils and fragrances have been used in Asia for centuries to relax and rejuvenate - and even to heal - users. The same principles are being used today in new and imaginative ways by Hong Kong manufacturers to delight a new generation of consumers.

Stressed-out workers will find comfort in the finely fragranced mouse pads made by Flamingo Gifts Creation Ltd. These pads are designed to freshen up the workplace and add colour and fun to the desktop. The pads come in a variety of shapes, colours and aromas. According to managing director Angela Lau, flower and fruit aromas are the most popular.

Flamingo once made perfumed pads to promote a new fragrance from a major perfume house. The company also made mint-fragranced Mickey Mouse pads for Disney Corp. For night owls, there are pads that glow in the dark and glitter on the inside.

Pads cost US$1 FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of 1,000 pieces. Shipment usually takes 3-4 weeks. "The price can come down to US$0.50 for a larger order," says Lau.

Flamingo also makes fragranced coasters. "We made some coasters for a tea company once and infused them with the same smell as the tea," says Lau. "We are a very flexible team. You submit the design and we will make it."

Flamingo's major market is Japan, but the company is keen to venture beyond, particularly into the European market.

Incense-burning is a common practice in homes and temples around Asia and has become a popular fashion trend in Europe and the US. At the forefront of this trend is High Prosper Int'l Ltd, a manufacturer and exporter of incense products for more than 30 years.

"People are increasingly burning incense at their dining tables and during meditations - even in the workplace. It is a new fashion and business is very good," says High Prosper's manager Carol Wong.

High Prosper makes the incense from wood powder and imported oils at its two factories on the Chinese mainland. The fragrance oil is imported from Europe, and this - according to Wong - ensures that the company's products are of the best quality.

High Prosper makes products under its own Incensia and SpiritCore brand names, but also welcomes customers' designs. Price depends on order quantity and the type of perfume and packaging required. Wong stresses that High Prosper's products range from the low price range through to luxury items. Shipment depends on quantities, but usually takes 30-60 days after order confirmation.

Wise Choice Int'l Ltd offers some of the best value for money in the aromatic gift market. This company produces a full range of gift sets, comprising bath lotions, shower gels and soap. These sets include sponges and brushes. The soap base is imported from Malaysia and France, while the basketry is sourced from the Chinese mainland. A set costs US$2-10 FOB Hong Kong.

According to manager Nelson Woo, economies of scale enable the company to keep costs low. "We ship 3-5 containers of our products to the US at a time. This enables us to import large quantities of manufacturing materials at a lower cost," says Woo.

Wise Choice sells mainly to the US, Europe, Japan and Malaysia, but is trying to develop the Middle East market. The company has its own in-house designer, who designs original products as well as working closely with clients on OEM projects. "If a client demands high quality ingredients, we can use natural-flower and plant extracts. We have a wide range of fragrances available, such as all the flower fragrances and even special aromatic sensations like chocolate and milk," says Woo.

Products are tested to US and EC approved standards before shipment. Minimum order is 10,000 pieces and shipment usually takes 45 days after order confirmation.

Lutex Co Ltd is a prolific producer of exciting toiletry goods. Lutex launches 13 ranges of new products each year, and this comprises nearly 500 new items. The company's success is a culmination of 60 years' experience in the business combined with a modern innovative approach and excellent customer relations.

The oriental-spa range of products combines sophisticated packaging with an exotic ethnic feel. "These gifts sets are particularly popular in such places as the US and Europe, where people are familiar with the spa concept," says marketing executive Yvonne Chu.

Lutex has its own laboratories and a highly trained team of designers and marketing and merchandising professionals. Production is carried out at the company's 1,000-worker factory on the Chinese mainland. "We are constantly updating our machinery and exploring new innovative production processes," says Chu. Shipment is normally 30-60 days after order confirmation.

Shaken And Stirred

Barware Premiums

Stainless steel beehive-design wine coolers and silver-plated champagne flutes from Trempest Ltd create perfect displays of bar-top elegance.

BARWARE premiums come in many different shapes, sizes and designs. They range from silver-plated goblets and stainless steel cocktail shakers to colourful plastic drinking straws, stirrers, multi-purpose bar-top gadgets and exotic coasters. Hong Kong is a leading centre for the design and manufacture of such premiums.

Trempest Ltd was founded in 1976 and has its headquarters in Hong Kong. The company's main manufacturing facility is its 100,000-square-foot, 500-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. The company produces a wide range of barware premiums made from stainless steel and plated in chrome and silver. These products include cocktail shakers, wine coolers, opener-stopper sets and goblets.

"Our most popular line by far is our silver-plated champagne flutes, priced at US$7 per pair FOB Hong Kong. This is because there are many occasions on which they can be used as gifts, including wedding presents. We make a range of more than 1,000 items from raw materials sourced from Japan and Australia. Our average monthly production capacity in value terms is US$500,000. Our minimum order value is US$15,000 spread over up to four items and we can ship to most markets 45-60 days after order confirmation," says Trempest's managing director Stephen Lam.

Trempest also makes a stainless-steel beehive-design wine cooler (US$9.05), a chrome-plated champagne opener and stopper set (US$1.05) and a silver-plated bar spoon (US$0.90). All prices are ex-factory China. Trempest's Queen Victoria brand is on sale in most of the world's major markets.

Established in 1982, Philip Lo & Co Ltd concentrates on making top-quality stainless-steel barware premiums for clients in Europe and the US. The company's 5,000-square-metre factory in Jiangmen on the Chinese mainland employs 300 workers and produces a broad range of matt-, mirror- and satin-finish items for OEM customers as well as products under its own Homelover brand.

Philip Lo sources its raw materials from the Chinese mainland and Japan. Products include a minibar set in matt-finished stainless steel (US$5.85), a 700ml satin-finish cocktail shaker (US$4.80 FOB), a 500ml mirror-finish cocktail shaker (US$4.20) and satin- or mirror-finish etched coasters (US$0.43 each). All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

"Our minimum order is for about 1,200 items, usually at a value of about US$10,000 per shipment. Goods are normally in the hands of our customers 60-75 days after order confirmation, but this depends on where we ship to," says Philip Lo's sales manager Emily Lee.

Chung Fai Metal & Plastic Fty Ltd, according to its sales manager Brian Ma, is one of the few true "one-stop-shop" producers of metal and plastic barware premiums in Hong Kong. "Our company handles everything from design and mould-making through to chromium-plating and packaging," says Ma.

Chung Fai started in 1967 and employs more than 350 skilled workers in its factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. The company specializes in two quality lines - chromium-plated, chess-style wine stoppers and handy three-in-one corkscrews.

"Our monthly capacity is about 70,000 wine stoppers and at least 15,000 corkscrews. The minimum order is 7,200 per item. Our major markets are in Europe and we can ship within 30 days of order confirmation," says Ma.

Chung Fai sources ABS from Japan and zinc alloy from Europe. The three-in-one corkscrew is priced at US$0.35 FOB Hong Kong and the chess-style wine stopper at US$0.60.

While many of Chung Fai's products appear in the market under the Voila brand, the company also undertakes OEM work and one-off promotional orders. Customers include such well-known companies as Phillip Morris. Ma sees barware premiums as a growth sector and Chung Fai will concentrate on developing a new range of wine and liqueur accessories.

Apoly Industrial Ltd has been producing moulded plastic barware premiums since 1985 at its factories in Shenzhen and Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

According to its general manager Edward Hung, Apoly's output is entirely OEM, and most of its customers are design shops, promotional companies and advertising agencies in Europe and the US. Products include coloured plastic stirrers priced at HK$0.10 FOB Hong Kong each without printing. Printing costs HK$0.04 per colour per piece with original mould-making at HK$4,500 (US$577) per order. Mould-making takes up to 30 days.

Apoly also makes a range of spiral drinking straws for HK$90 (US$11.54) per 10,000 pieces. Printing of logos pushes this to HK$380 (US$48.72) per 10,000 pieces.

"Our minimum order is usually 30,000 pieces. Shipment is after 21-25 days to Europe, 16-18 days to the US west coast and 22-26 days to the US east coast. Our average monthly output in value terms is at least HK$1m. Most designs come from our OEM customers, after which we provide a flexible, high-speed, quality tailor-made service," says Hung.

Sparing The Trees

Eco-Friendly Stationery

Wah Kee Tools Co Ltd puts old newsprint to use, turning it into pencils considered more difficult to break than traditional wooden pencils.

AS eco-friendly stationery products gain worldwide acceptance, Hong Kong stationery manufacturers are recognizing the potential of this market and offering attractive products.

Climax Paper Converters Ltd produces its Greenergy brand of eco-friendly stationery on the basis of its motto "reduce, reuse and recycle". Products are made from brown kraft paper. According to the company's product, design and development vice-president Chan Chong-fat, no bleach is used in the paper-making process.

In addition, Climax prints simple patterns to minimize the use of ink and does not use PVC or heavy metal chemicals in its production processes. The brown kraft is imported from the US, where timber mills use such environmental management systems as EMAS and ISO 14001 while sourcing wood from sustainable forests.

"Wear-resistant brown kraft paper is long-lasting, while the 100% waste-recycled boards can also be reused," says Chan.

Climax produces its stationery at two factories in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland. Major markets are the US, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. Shipment is 45-60 days after order confirmation. Minimum order is 3,600 pieces per item.

Climax's 12-pocket, A4-sized hand-wallet costs US$1.50 per piece. A CD holder with a ribbon handle is US$0.85. A memo pad with a pencil is US$1.20, and an index-card box is US$1.50. A stationery set packaged in a basket is US$2. All prices are FOB Hong Kong

The tabletop designs from Ijen Enterprises Ltd are "simple and practical", according to general manager Francis Leung. The main material is recycled paper made through an environmentally friendly process. "The paper does not undergo complicated filtration, de-inking, processing and reprocessing like prestige recycled paper," says Leung.

Some of from Ijen's eco-friendly products are corrugated, while the rest are plain. Ijen uses mainly natural colors for its collection and water-based or non-toxic ink when it prints or dyes graphic designs. Such detailing as string, shells and sticks are from natural and environmentally friendly materials.

Most of Ijen's recycled paper is sourced from the Chinese mainland, while special materials are imported from Southeast Asia and Europe. The company's Shenzhen factory on the Chinese mainland produces about one million eco-friendly items per month. Prices vary from US$0.30-2.00 FOB Hong Kong per item. Major markets include Europe, the US and some Asian markets.

According to Leung, most of Climax's products go to Europe. "This may be because Europeans are more concerned than others about the environment. Our customers in Europe are interested in both our tabletop stationery and our packaging products, like paper bags for wine in Germany," he says.

Focal Paper Products Fty Ltd has two main product lines in eco-friendly stationery. According to manager Anita Wong, the company's traditional products include photo frames, recycled notebooks, pencil cases, drawer boxes and memo-pad boxes.

Focal's second product range incorporates unusual designs, materials and functions. This range features corrugated cardboard, which can be printed with customers' logos using four-process color printing.

Focal also makes such desktop stationery as model GB021-PF, a cylinder-shaped memo-pad cabinet, which includes a memo-pad holder, a clip-holder and a penholder.

Most of Focal's raw materials come from Southeast Asia, South Korea, Indonesia and Japan. Its eco-friendly products are produced at two factories in Guangdong Province. Monthly production of eco-friendly stationery is about 200,000 pieces.

Focal concentrates on different styles and materials to attract customer attention and to popularize eco-friendly products, according to Wong. Minimum order is 3,000 pieces and shipment is 3-6 weeks after order confirmation. Prices are US$0.30-2.00 FOB Hong Kong per piece.

Greenworks Int'l Ltd lays claim to being a pioneer in developing eco-friendly, pulp-moulded craft and stationery products using 100% recycled paper. Innovative products include 3D painting kits, scrapbooks, palettes and stationery cases.

"Our products allow children to use their creativity and imagination, while at the same time educating them to contribute to a clean and healthy environment," says assistant general manager Peter Ng.

Greenwork's factory in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland was certified ISO 1400 in August 2000. The factory sources and recycles waste paper directly from the group's printing plant. Paint and other accessories are sourced locally. Monthly production of eco-friendly stationery is 100,000-400,000 pieces.

Greenworks has also developed an OEM and licensed range of eco-friendly stationery and engages in direct selling to major suppliers of school stationery and catalogue houses. Main markets are North America and Europe. Shipment time varies from 30-45 days after order confirmation. Minimum order requirement is 3,000 pieces. Prices are US$1-5 FOB Hong Kong per piece.
