Jewellery Storage(HKTDC Gifts, Premium & Stationery, Vol 03,2006)

Treasure Chests

Win Seng Mfg Fty Ltd's porcelain jewellery boxes - in oval, round, hexagon and heart shapes - are decorated with charming pastoral scenes

The enormous worldwide demand for jewellery of all kinds is fuelling an equally insatiable need for attractive, stylish storage options specifically designed to keep precious items safe and secure.

Not surprisingly, as one of the world's leading jewellery producers Hong Kong is a treasure chest that offers buyers a dazzling selection of jewellery storage products in a myriad of designs, materials and prices.

For example, take the elegant wooden jewellery boxes manufactured by 14-year old Charming Products Enterprises Ltd, which has shipped to Japan since its debut and is now targeting the US, Germany and Australia.

"Our jewellery boxes are crafted from quality wood fashioned into a variety of finishes, from natural to high grade piano polish," enthuses director K.C. Chan.

Charming Product's two factories in Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland cover 140,000 square metres, employ 1,000 workers and utilise timber from the company's 4,000 hectare forest there. "This gives us an edge in controlling both material quality and price," Chan stresses.

The ISO 9001-certified factories include kilns to ensure the pine timber is properly dried before use, which is especially important for shipment destinations that have very low humidity.

Charming Products also uses medium-density fibre (MDF) from the mainland to produce up to 5,000 pieces of jewellery boxes per month, most of which are OEM orders.

"Minimum order is 500 boxes per model, with delivery 30-45 days after order confirmation," Chan adds.

Also producing a wide range of jewellery boxes is Eastcross Int'l Ltd, which introduces more than 500 new styles each year and also makes to customer specifications.

"We offer boxes made of paper, fabric and plastic," says marketing manager Dickson Siu. "Most of them are sold as consumer products and some are used for jewellery packaging.

"Our latest fabric models featuring embroidery, beading and sequins have been well-received in Spain and Japan, while the paper prototypes in glittering material or accented with UV spot effects are popular in other European countries, the US, Japan and Australia."

The 14-year-old company's products are manufactured at a 600-worker, 80,000 square-metre factory in Shantou on the mainland, using cotton, polyester, paper and PP plastic.

Siu notes Eastcross Int'l can produce up to 30 FEUs of jewellery boxes per month. "We only require a minimum order value of US$4,000 per shipment, and delivery is 45 days after order confirmation," says Siu.

Equally committed to meeting buyer needs and demands is Top Elegant Industrial Ltd, which adds 50 new and fashionably elegant jewellery boxes to its catalogue each year for customers in Europe and North and South America.

General manager Ringo Chan says that Top Elegant's recent monogram pattern models use jacquard fabric or silk screening on leather or PVC to achieve a modern effect.

"We also have very thoughtful designs with a travelling kit inside a big jewellery box or smaller hand-carry designs, all perfect for busy ladies," adds Chan.

Incorporated in 1999, Top Elegant Industrial's 80,000- square-foot, 600-worker mainland factory in Shenzhen produces 50,000 items a month using split cow leather from Korea, and PVC and fabrics from Taiwan and the mainland.

"OEM and ODM orders share equal weight with us," Chan claims. "Besides shipping to importers, we also manufacture for many in-store brands."

Top Elegant requires a minimum order value of US$7,000 and 300 pieces per model for delivery 40 days after order confirmation.

Similarly progressive is 18-year-old Yuen Hing Trading Co, which began making jewellery pouches but quickly diversified its range to include fabric and paper boxes.

"We offer more than 10 new designs in various categories each year," explains manager Clara Yeung. "They come in a range of materials and themes geared to the preferences of different markets."

Yuen Hing's latest collections feature an upbeat metallic PU model enlivened with rivets and eyelets, and a satin design accented with subtle cord details.

Yeung notes that the company is always ready to modify its original designs according to customer requirements, and claims its strength lies in sourcing new materials.

"There may not be much variation when it comes to the inside compartments of jewellery boxes, but a new material does alter their appeal quite drastically," Yeung insists.

Yuen Hing's two factories in Shantou total 20,000 square feet, employ 200 workers and produce 20,000 jewellery boxes and pouches a month utilising polyester satin and PVC sourced from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the mainland.

"Today a jewellery pouch or roll is a staple category as many US importers are buying for jewellery houses that use them as gifts," Yeung notes.

Yuen Hing, whose other markets include the UK, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Russia, requires a minimum order quantity of 1,000-3,000 pieces per style delivered 30-45 days after order confirmation.

With such an enormous array on offer, Hong Kong manufacturers can be relied upon to keep providing the quality jewellery storage products that keep buyers returning year after year.
