AMONG stationery items, pens and pencils are obviously indispensable. From home to workplace, there is always a demand for pen/pencil holders and Hong Kong manufacturers have writing instrument receptacles that are right-on.
Tiger Enterprise has been manufacturing and re-exporting novelty pen and pencil holders since 1972.
Today, the ISO 9002-certified company produces up to three million pencil cases, pouches and bags each month and in 2001 had a turnover of around HK$250m.
"Tiger Family is our brandname but we also manufacture pen and pencil holders to our customers' specifications. Our latest designs include 3D and animated pencil cases," says sales manager Betty Chan.
The company's Yummy Fruit oval pencil bags (Model 38062) are manufactured in brightly coloured PVC, each bag bearing the name of a fruit in a fun and funky design. Each four-piece unit is priced at US$0.77 FOB Hong Kong.
The Dyna Junior pencil case (Model 38042) is a very popular item with school-age children, says Chan, and is available with a complimentary range of pencils, pens, and other assorted stationery items.
The price per four-piece unit is US$2.18 FOB Hong Kong and the minimum order is 1,000 units. Delivery takes place 45 days after order confirmation.
Kenfield Enterprises Ltd is a 25-year-old company specializing in pencil-related raw materials and finished pencils. Brands manufactured and exported include Spectrum, Zodiac and Liberty.
The company has a 12-hectare factory in China as well as an office in Hong Kong. Monthly production reaches 12 million pieces of wooden-cased coloured-lead pencils and annual turnover is approximately US$450m.
Manager Charles Wun says, "We have an extensive range of pencil set products including water-soluable colour pencils, triangular colour pencils, HB or sketching pencils. We also have a wide range of pen set styles including sturdy cardboard packaging and attractively designed tins."
Wun adds that one of the latest developments on the market is a pencil with metallic coloured lead and Kenfield will soon be offering metallic-lead pencil sets.
In addition to its brand name products, the company produces on an OEM basis and experience yields rapid response.
"As much as 90% of our business is for OEMs. Most of our clients, who are mainly from the US, Western Europe and Japan, specify their requirements and we are able to produce samples quickly for them."
Minimum order quantity is 72,000 pieces and delivery takes 14-30 days following order confirmation.
Let-Win Plastic Products Fty Ltd manufactures up to 600,000 pencil cases and 200,000 school bags per month at its 100,000-sq-ft factory in Shenzen on the Chinese mainland.
Assistant manager at the Hong Kong office, Kevin Shea, says that because Let-Win has been producing pen and pencil holders for more than 18 years the company easily meets the demands of a constantly changing market.
"One of our latest models is our 'Save the Environment' A4 single-decker (Model 22116), which is a pencil holder that incorporates an A4 sized notepad. This is a popular item because it responds to young people's desire to be environmentally aware."
The price per three-piece unit is US$2.84 FOB Hong Kong.
Shea says that one of Let Win's most popular designs is the vehicles-style pencil pouch (Model 22308), which comes in a range of designs and costs US$0.52 per three piece set.
Let-Win manufactures using the brand name Zig-Zag and exports to markets around the world including Germany, the UK, Poland, Italy, Greece, the Domincan Republic and the UAE.
Approximately 40-50% of Let-Win's business is for OEMs. A minimum order of 1,000 units is required and delivery takes about 30-45 days.
PMP Industrial Ltd is a manufacturer of stationery products including pen and pencil holders. Its latest range includes an innovative array of plastic desk organisers designed to hold pens and pencils and other small items such as paper clips and erasers.
PMP has an office in Hong Kong in addition to a factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland and has been producing stationery items since 1987.
Model P997J is a modern, curvaceous design in tinted plastic and costs US$0.80 per piece FOB Hong Kong.
A more traditional, cylindrical shape is reflected in Model P986IG, shown here in a trendy shade of green. It costs US$1.20 per piece FOB Hong Kong.
Marketing manager Brain Yu says, "We find that this style of pen holder is very popular with our markets in Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan."
Yu adds that the company emphasizes quality, using imported GP-PS and ABS from Japan and Taiwan.
The company delivers within 30 days, and requires a minimum order value of US$6,000.
