One veteran maker, Silver Art (HK) Ltd, has an annual turnover of US$3.5m and produces more than 20,000 glass, ceramic and polyresin gift items each month. It accepts minimum orders for 1,200 pieces per item, for delivery 45-60 days after order confirmation.
"Our exclusive line is mosaic glass for wine glasses and goblets, and our products sell well around the world," says manager Peter Wang. "We have been producing glass gifts for more than 12 years at our 6,000-square-metre, 600-worker factory in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland."
Silver Art produces almost exclusively to customers' requirements. "We do not have our own brand name," says Wang, "and most of our production is OEM for buyers in major markets such as the US and Europe."
Most of the glass gift items range in price from US$2-4 FOB Hong Kong each and are fashioned from materials sourced on the mainland. "We are always ready to work out the practical details of a customer's idea, and our advanced production facilities ensure reliable delivery dates," Wang assures.
Meanwhile, China Moon Enterprises Ltd claims to be among the first in Hong Kong to perfect a new system of personalising glass gifts.
"The client can simply take a picture with a digital camera, email it to us, and we will incorporate it into a glass gift item together with a desired slogan," says manager Dennis Shiu.
"We are currently producing many such items for retailers and large corporations, but we can also accept private customers as there is no minimum order - we will take an order for a single item, but with a small surcharge."
The glass tablets and photo frames produced in this way also carry sandblasted slogans with romantic sentiments such as You Are My Life, To My Love and Do Not Forget Me.
Established in 1991, China Moon produces some 100,000 items a month at its 3,500-square-metre, 200-worker factory in Guangdong Province for delivery about 35 days after order confirmation.
"Europe and the US are our main markets, while we also have some customers in Asia and a few in Hong Kong," says Shiu. "We use our own Cuplus brand name, and FOB Hong Kong unit prices start from less than US$1 and rise according to the intricacy of the design."
Blown-glass gift items, including drinking glasses, ashtrays and paperweights, are specialties of Coastal Enterprises Ltd. "We make lots of ashtrays and drinking glasses that often carry the names and company logos of some famous breweries," manager Terri Ho says.
Coastal Enterprises, which was established on the mainland 12 years ago and opened its Hong Kong office in 2000, has major markets in the US and Europe and also sells in Asia - including Malaysia and the Philippines.
Contracted factories do some of the glass blowing, but most of the work is done in the firm's 12,000-square-metre, 130-worker plant in Guangdong Province.
"Creativity and unique designs are our main strengths," says Ho. "So, while we do not have our own brand, we supply to some very famous international names. For example, we make nude female figures in glass for a famous US magazine and many other unusual items."
Ho says FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$0.20-3.00 for minimum orders of 2,000 pieces (negotiable) for delivery 45 days after order confirmation.
Meanwhile, glass teapots with matching glass cups in plastic holders are among the attractive gift items made by Goodmark Mfg Co.
"Our glass teapot set is very popular with customers in Asia and overseas," says manager Kwok Wong. "We also have many ornamental glass items, and we make ceramic mugs decorated with logos for the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the Hyatt hotel chain and many commercial companies."
Production is also on a large scale, and the firm turns out 30,000 items a month at a 100,000-square-foot, 600-worker factory in mainland Shandong Province.
Wong says the minimum order is negotiable and that the company will discuss any order amount. Delivery is promised within 45 days of order confirmation. "Our highly competitive FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$0.05-6.00," says Wong.
"While we were only founded in 2000, we already have a worldwide reputation," claims Wong. "Our market is truly international because we export to North America, Europe and Asia. Of course, we are looking to expand our markets and we expect good growth next year."
It seems almost crystal clear - Hong Kong leads the field in adding grace and beauty to fancy glassware and helping to personalise attractive glass gifts.
