Coloured Pens, Pencils & Crayons(HKTDC Gifts, Premium & Stationery, Vol 02,2005)
ISO 9001-certified Vanker Industries Ltd makes more than 300 items, including crayons, colouring pens, art sets, handwriting pens, fineliners, rollerballs, highlighters and glitter glue.
Production reaches more than one million pens per day - conforming to EN71, ASTM D-4236 and BS 7272 standards - at a 15,000-square-metre, 500-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.
Popular favourites include a wide range of colouring pen sets in all sizes, nib varieties and combination packages, and an extensive selection of jumbo, mega jumbo, water soluble, finger- and animal-shaped crayons.
There is also an interesting range of art sets in numerous sizes and colourful cases, comprising coloured pencils, pens, crayons, markers and other stationery items.
"Previously, customers wanted larger sets of one type of coloured pen, but now the trend is for smaller packages of mixed items such as pens, stampers and glitter glue," says marketing executive Anna Choi.
"Our latest products are a Desk Top Tidy and a Secret Colour Cottage, both of which include a variety of coloured pens, crayons, jumbo markers, glitter and glitter glue, watercolour paints, coloured paper and shaped sponges, all housed in attractive packaging."
Vanker sources ink from the US and Germany and nibs from Japan and Asia. Major export markets are Europe (70%) and the US, and FOB Hong Kong prices range from US$0.10-4.00 for a minimum order value of US$3,000 per shipment delivered 30-45 days after order confirmation.
Also offering a myriad of crayons, coloured pens, art supplies, art and craft accessories and play sets is ISO 9002-certified industry veteran Artrain Industrial Ltd.
More than 1,000 different items are made at its 15,000-square-metre, 600-worker factory in Shenzhen, and Artrain supplies full EN71 and ASTM D-4236 safety reports. The firm also produces wax and plastic crayons in a number of sizes, colour combinations and packaging options, including new plastic crayon sets of 12 mixed colours housed in cute colourful cat cases.
"Coloured pens and crayons are easy to play with, highly portable and retain their popularity with children," says marketing executive Arta Ting.
Other favourite items include art supplies and brushes, watercolour cakes, dry cakes and window art. "We have introduced many new products," notes Ting, "including Suncatchers, which is a line of easy-painting window decoration play sets."
The company exports to 30 countries, with the US accounting for 25-30% of shipments ahead of the UK and France. "We also hope to expand our business in Germany," adds Ting. Minimum orders of 3,000-5,000 pieces per item per order are delivered 30 days after order confirmation.
Speedy delivery is also key for ISO 9001-certified Glory Stationery Mfg Co Ltd, which produces more than 100 different items including crayons, markers, watercolours, and painting and art kits at its 250-worker, 3,500-square-metre factory in Huizhou.
Minimum orders of 10,000 units (depending on item) are delivered 25-35 days after order confirmation. "We cater mainly for preschool children," explains sales manager Jeff Ng, "and our most popular products are coloured markers and crayons that are also used as premium or gift items."
Glory's new products include the Chubby Marker with double or triple bullet nibs, which enable children to draw three different coloured lines in one stroke. "We have also expanded our watercolour sets to include 42 and 48 different colours," he adds.
Ng says that most of the company's DIY colouring sets include a jigsaw puzzle, colouring pens and stamps to enable children to make attractive personal cards.
Glory produces its own brands - Glory, Mr. Color (for the 3-6 age group), and Kids Creation - in a variety of painting, watercolour, window colour and glitter products. "We also cater for OEM brands with licensed cartoon characters, and offer luxury packaging such as fancy carrying cases and backpacks," says Ng.
FOB Hong Kong product prices range from as little as US$0.01 to US$7-8 for a fancy package or case including a full range of colouring items. The major market is Europe (60%) followed by the US (30-35%). "We are also looking at new markets such as Japan and Korea," notes Ng.
Another OEM/ODM company adding colour to young lives is Leader Art Industries Ltd, which produces a wide selection of crayons, markers, glitter glue and stamp pads at its 160-worker, 5,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen.
"Our most popular products are marker pens in 12, 24 and 30 colours, and wax and plastic crayons in PVC cases or printed boxes," explains manager Sam Law.
The company's large crayon collection includes regular, chunky triangular shapes, jumbo, mega jumbo, metallic colour, bi-colour, two-tone, glow-in-the-dark, glitter, neon and washable and stack-up crayons.
"Our new items include a colour-changing stamping marker, which has a different colour stamp on the other end of the main marker colour, and our washable stamp pads in square and hexagonal shapes," says Law.
Prices are available on request for minimum order values of US$3,000 delivered 40 days after order confirmation. Products are EN71 and ASTM D-4236 tested and major markets include the US (60%), the UK and Japan.
As more countries embrace the latest trends in innovative colouring materials, so Hong Kong responds with trend-setting ideas.
