Christmas Decorations(HKTDC Enterprise, Vol 08,2006)

Festive Favourites

Handcrafted, hand-painted porcelain or polyresin collectible buildings with Christmas accessories are a specialty of PEHA (HK) Ltd

Christmas continues to grow worldwide as a multicultural celebration of friends and family, with traditional decorative tabletops and ornamented trees adding colour and cheer to the festivities.

Experienced Hong Kong companies such as Kimbo Handicraft Co Ltd provide a huge selection of decorations that prove perennially popular.

"We manufacture all types of PVC Christmas decorations such as trees, baubles, metal work and hanging ornaments, candleholders, wreaths and garlands," explains marketing manager Celia Au.

The company provides OEM and ODM services, with clients often adapting Kimbo Handicraft's 1,000-plus designs.

"For decorations, each year we produce 7-8 colour combinations, each offering about 300 items," Au adds. "We also offer 7-8 different Christmas tree collections, each available in 4-5 styles, providing buyers with 40-50 tree options."

The most popular Christmas trees are red, green or black, and stand 61/2, 7 or 71/2 feet tall, Au notes. "While traditional styles are most popular, buyers are also demanding a more realistic look. In response, we mix different shades of green and add cones and small pines to the branch tips for a more natural look and feel."

Products are manufactured at the company's 10,000-square-metre, 450-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, which produces 30 and 60 TEUs of Christmas decorations and trees respectively per month.

FOB Hong Kong unit prices vary depending on style and detail, with trees costing from US$2 for miniature versions to US$200 or more for a large detailed tree.

"However, our most popular line is colourful baubles and mid-priced items," says Au. "Decorations are priced from U$0.20 for a simple bauble to US$30 and up for a highly decorative garland."

Minimum orders of one TEU are delivered 45-60 days after order confirmation. "Europe takes 80% of our exports, while other key areas include the US and the Middle East," she notes.

Buyers seeking something handcrafted and hand-painted should check out PEHA (HK) Ltd, a specialist in collectible, lighted Christmas village scenes with more than 1,000 house and accessory designs to offer.

"We launch 30-50 new model buildings each year, including houses, churches, flower shops, restaurants, schools, train stations and others," explains sales manager Julia Leung.

"Each collectible house has numerous figurines and other accessories such as trees and lampposts that combine to create unique tabletop displays."

When lit by electric light, the houses create a magical 3D effect. "All are detailed to reflect the festive season, featuring snow, Christmas garlands and skiing figures," Leung adds.

Products are manufactured from polyresin or porcelain at a 10,000-square-metre, joint-venture factory in Guangdong Province on the mainland that employs between 500-700 workers.

"Our own designs account for about 90% of production, but we also handle OEM orders," explains Leung. "The average FOB Yantian unit price is US$10 per house, with accessories costing US$0.50-3.00 each."

PEHA requires a minimum order of one TEU delivered 45-60 days after order confirmation. Approximately 80% of exports go to Europe, with other key markets including North America and Asia.

Taking a more traditional approach is Onfil Products Co Ltd, which has been manufacturing water globes and candles for more than 30 years in addition to producing artificial flowers. "We offer more than 500 styles," claims sales and marketing manager Jacky Tsang.

"Candles are our main business, and are available in plain, art and jelly as well as set in glassware," he adds. "About 70% of candle production is for the Christmas season - so red, green, gold and silver designs predominate."

Popular shapes are round and square, and include motifs such as Santa Claus, snowmen, trees, Christmas flowers and Yule logs.

The company offers unscented or scented candles - with pine the most popular aroma - and can include gift packaging if required.

Onfil's water globes are made of glass or plastic, and the current collection includes always-popular snow scenes, Santas, deer and snowmen.

The company's 10,000-square-foot, 50-plus worker factory in Foshan on the mainland produces minimum order values of U$6,000 per shipment, delivered one month after order confirmation.

Unit prices depend on design and quality required, with globes ranging from US$0.20 for a plastic version to US$2-3 for a high-end glass model. Candles cost US$0.40-5.00 per piece.

About 80% of Onfil's business is ODM, with the rest OEM. "We export 60%-70% of our output to Europe, and the remainder goes to the US and Asia," Tsang adds.

Also targeting the traditional market is Longwell Metal Products Co Ltd, which specialises in Christmas tabletop and hanging decorations and promotional items, all of which are manufactured at its 4,000-square-metre, 300-worker factory in Dongguan on the mainland.

"We have more than 100 designs and also handle OEM requests," says spokesperson Evelyn Wong.

"Most popular are our steel or brass Christmas ornaments, decorations and candleholders plated in gold and silver colours," she adds. "These feature cut-outs and etchings of traditional images such as Santas, sleighs, angels and trees."

Product prices start at US$0.20 per piece FOB Hong Kong, depending on details required, for a minimum order value of US$10,000 delivered 30-60 days after confirmation.

"Europe takes about 60% of our exports," adds Wong, "while our US business is mainly OEM. Buyers from Japan love our designs."

It seems clear that when it comes to Christmas decorations, Hong Kong produces festive favourites appealing to even the most discerning markets.
