The manufacture of Christmas decorations is a multi-billion dollar industry, and Hong Kong manufacturers are recognised suppliers of all things bright and beautiful to awaken the seasonal spirit at the turn of each year.
One veteran producer is Everwin Int'l Industrial Ltd, which began producing Christmas decorations 34 years ago. Founded by Lee Ting Chuen, three generations later this family-run business "has only got bigger and better", says Lee's grandson, and director, Angus Lee.
"We do all kinds of Christmas and Easter decorations, along with glitzy and fun decorations for occasions such as St Valentine's Day and Halloween. Our range includes hanging ornaments, Christmas trees, garlands and seasonal wreaths. While most of these are made of plastic, we also use natural products like pine cones and grape vine stems that we source from suppliers in the northern mainland," Lee says. Other raw materials used in combination with plastic come from Japan.
"We process the various materials into the appropriate parts using specialised tools and machines. Because of our extensive experience in this line, we produce new designs annually. Generally, clients like new designs and will not buy repeat items. However, there are also custom-made items based on clients' specifications," he adds.
Everwin, which sells its products mainly in the US and Europe, requires a minimum order of one TEU for shipment 45-60 days after confirmation of order. Prices are available on application.
Another producer of a wide range of Christmas decorative items is Golden Arts Gifts & Decor Fty Ltd.
"Each year, we create many new items and sometimes our products are based on specific orders from clients. We are also on the lookout for ideas from a variety of sources including direct feedback from our major markets. We export about 50% of production to Europe, 30% to the US, and 20% to South America," says manager Alice Mak.
"Our main items are table-top Christmas trees and hanging decorations, followed by garlands and wreaths. We also make coloured plastic balls, packed in PVC boxes, in a size range from 40-100mm. The range of colours depends on the customer's requirements," she says.
Golden Arts uses metal, wire, PVC, polyfoam and some natural materials to make a variety of products like candleholders, ornamental fruit and decorative pine cones. "The pine cones are real and come from the Chinese mainland," says Mak.
Another specialist in Christmas home decorations is Greenfields Int'l Designs Ltd. This company provides Christmas tree ornaments and other seasonal decorations for the table or home such as wreaths and garlands.
Production takes place at the company's contracted factories in the mainland's Shenzhen special economic zone, which process raw materials like polyresin, wood, porcelain, glass and clay. "In the past 10 years, natural materials have become very popular, especially in the US, which is our main market. In response, we use more rattan and jute to form various containers and wrappings. Both of these materials come from the Chinese mainland," says manager Christopher Sit.
"Every couple of years or so, new materials come on to the market. About 10 years ago, the most common was plastic. Today, the trend is for natural raw materials in combinations that are more diverse. We have to follow this trend if we want to compete," says Sit. "Basically, while Christmas demands traditional items, in the US market buyers also look for fancier items."
Designs for decorations may be either custom-made or off-the-shelf. "We can offer clients pre-assembled collections containing a variety of items, or make up special orders from different sources as required," says Sit. The company has a minimum order value of US$1,000 per item, which can be shipped 45-60 days after confirmation of order. Prices are available on application.
On a bright note, Neon King Ltd has been producing colourful indoor and outdoor lighting for home and professional use for 20 years. "Our indoor and outdoor decorative lighting is very reliable and attractive. These are year-round sellers that are also ideal for Christmas and other festivals," says senior marketing executive Fion Mak.
"We use pilot lights as they are more durable and of better quality. LEDs, in particular, are brighter and also consume less power," she adds. Recently, Neon King introduced a ready-made Christmas tree, called the Spark Light Tree, which is delivered with LEDs or ordinary Christmas lights. This tree is flexible and foldable, thus saving on transportation costs. It can also be tailor-made in various sizes, lengths and designs. Price depends on the size and complexity of the order.
This ISO 9002-certified company manufactures its products at an 8,000-worker, 35,000-square-metre factory in the mainland's Zhuhai special economic zone. Many products have international safety approvals like CE and UL.
So, for a bright and cheery line in Christmas and festive requirements, look no further than Hong Kong.
