Christmas Decorations(HKTDC Enterprise, Vol 02,2006)
These cuddly stuffed Santas, snowmen and stockings from Carobo Enterprise Ltd make indispensable decorations during Christmas
This is especially true of Boto Co Ltd, the world's biggest manufacturer of artificial Christmas trees, where natural-looking green trees are hot items always in demand.
Made of PVC or a PE/PVC mix, popular models from Boto are trees that are 6-7.5-feet high. "Also, we find that most people want their trees to look like natural pine or blue spruce," says sales and marketing director Anita Au.
The 23-year-old OEM/ODM firm produces more than 400 kinds of Christmas trees and exports millions of them each year to the US, Canada, Australia and Europe, says Au.
FOB Yantian unit prices for Boto's trees start at US$2 for a small 3-foot model and climb to US$100 for a luxurious 7-foot tree complete with more than 1,000 dazzling lights.
"The price depends on the number of tips (branches), the light count and the size," says Au, adding that cashmere tips are especially in demand. She also claims that Boto was first to introduce trees pre-strung with lights. "A recent model is our Staylit tree, which has long-lasting microchip lights already attached."
Au mentions a growing new trend for multicoloured trees, particularly from buyers in Europe. "Black, white and pink trees are selling well in Europe, while in the US they still want traditional green - although models in different shades of green are starting to catch on," she says.
Also known for its wreaths and garlands, outdoor silhouettes, tree stands and shatterproof ornaments, Boto requires a minimum order of one FEU and delivers 60-90 days after order confirmation.
Meanwhile, a cuddly stuffed Santa, a snowman and reindeer made by Carobo Enterprise Ltd look certain to add to the Christmas joy.
"These items are made of cotton and nylon and sell for US$0.10-0.20 each FOB Shenzhen/Hong Kong for small sizes and up to US$5-8 each for models that are up to one metre high," says supervisor Clement Chan. "The expressions on the faces are meant to be humorous rather than traditional."
Hanging items designed for trees or doors are made of cotton or wood and sell for US$1-3 each, while Christmas stockings are priced at US$0.50-3.00 per piece.
Carbo's minimum order is one TEU, for delivery 45-60 days after order confirmation. Europe, Canada and the US are the firm's major export markets.
With claims to being one of Asia's most important manufacturers of snow globes, Kiu Hung Industries Ltd has an inventory of thousands of models at FOB Hong Kong unit prices ranging from US$6-20.
The firm's patented SnoMotion globes, which swirl snow while Christmas tunes play, are strong sellers. "The snow keeps on swirling until the music stops, " says director Danny Hui.
The glass globes range from 100-150mm in size, and feature handmade, hand-painted polyresin figures and artificial polyester snow. "In the US, globes that also contain a snowman sell best," Hui adds. "Elsewhere, Santa Claus is a popular addition."
Kiu Hung offers both battery-operated and mechanical SnoMotion globes, and on some models the figures rotate as the music plays. For traditionalists, there are also globes that can be shaken.
In the spirit of fun, the company also makes battery-operated Christmas stockings that wiggle. These 20-inch-long stockings sell for US$5-8 each. There are also colourful Christmas flags made of nylon, which hang from wooden or metal poles, priced at US$3-4 each.
Minimum order value is US$10,000, with delivery 60-90 days after order confirmation. The ISO 9001-certified company aims its exports at the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
Alternatively, for sturdy Christmas decorations made of hollow iron-wire and iron-sheet, Welford Industries Ltd has just the range. There are reindeers at about US$3 each FOB the Chinese mainland, and seven- to 27-inch Christmas trees with or without colourful plastic beads available from US$2.50-4.00.
Established in 1989, Welford produces these items, candleholders and metal wreaths at its 65,000-square-metre factory in Jiangmen on the mainland.
"We can add pine cones and wooden branches to the wreaths," says marketing manager Patrick Leung. "Wreaths cost about US$1 each, while our candleholders sell for US$0.30-5.00 each. Other products include metal foil tree ornaments or free-standing foil items in shiny red and green or gold colours."
The ISO 9002-certified OEM firm exports to the US, the UK, Germany and Japan, and also hopes to explore new markets in Russia, Korea and Eastern Europe.
"We're looking for agents and open to any discussions," Leung adds, noting that the company has a minimum order requirement of 1,000 pieces for delivery 45 days after order confirmation.
To get into the holiday mood, and to source a wide range of Christmas products at competitive prices, Hong Kong is a terrific one-stop shopping centre.
