Candles & Scents(HKTDC Enterprise, Vol 06,2006)
|Kobo Enterprises Ltd's Phodle range of printed scented candles, available in more than 20 images, sells particularly well in Europe and the US|
An example of such creative thinking is seen in Kobo Enterprises Ltd's PHODLE range of photo-quality imprinted scented candles that burn indefinitely. The exterior of the candle is made from wax, while in the centre is a heat-resistant holder wherein a tea-light candle is placed. The PHODLE maintains its shape as only the interior candle burns.
There are more than 20 different images to choose from, and customer designs and scent suggestions are welcome. "The PHODLE has proved a very popular item," comments business development manager Stanley Ng. "We receive many orders from buyers in Europe."
Phodle FOB Hong Kong unit prices are US$1.80 in any of three styles: Abacus, which stores three tea-lights in the body; Bosom, with just the plastic holder and one candle, and Classic, which is a traditional melting candle. The products measure 3.5 inches in height and diameter, and come in a polybag with a printed box. The minimum order is 600 pieces and delivery time is 2-3 months after confirmation of order.
The company was established in 1975, and its major markets are the US and Europe.
Office Communications Co, established in 1979, is also an experienced manufacturer of candles, candleholders and oil burners - usually bearing the Allstar brand name - as well as a supplier of aromatherapy essential oils.
Latest products include the bamboo range, which features woven bamboo and glass candleholders or oil diffuser holders in natural, walnut and tan shades.
"Our range is ideally suited to the spa and health-centre market, and appeals to both men and women," says president and general manager Joshson Lam.
The firm has individual items and boxed gift packs available, while the minimum order depends on the item. Prices are available upon application and delivery is 45 days after order confirmation. Major markets are the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, the US, Australia, Austria, Sweden, Germany, France and the UK.
Albatross (HK) Co Ltd is targeting the gifts and premiums market with its range of fragrant products.
"Our clients are mostly overseas advertising agencies or marketing companies," says general manager Jessie Lee. "High efficiency and product quality are very important to them, and we pride ourselves on our level of service and the consistency of the products we provide."
Presently popular is the firm's scented floral cushion, which is priced at US$0.72 per piece for a minimum order of 5,000 pieces, and its scented beads priced at US$8 per kilo for a minimum order of 50 kilos.
"Many fragrances are available, including apple, baby powder, cedar, cherry, chocolate, cinnamon, citrus, coffee, floral, garden, green apple, kiwi, jasmine, lavender, lemon, lime and new car," says Lee.
The UK and the US are the company's main markets and delivery is usually within 30 days of confirmation of order.
Also offering a wide range of scents is Mensonic Development Ltd, which manufactures a variety of scented candles in addition to candleholders made from metal or glass.
"To stay competitive in the candle market it is important to provide unique products, which is why our candleholders show such attention to detail in their design," says manager John Chow.
Typical popular examples include two metal candleholders, one with a fabric flower lid and the other with a delicate butterfly lid, while a glass candleholder features fine floral detailing.
"The FOB Hong Kong unit prices of these items range from US$1-2," says Chow. The minimum order is 3,600 pieces with delivery 45-50 days after order confirmation. Key markets are the US and Germany.
"The latest trend in scents is for milder aromas, such as green tea and lavender, as well as traditional favourites like vanilla and new floral-inspired fragrances such as sunflower," says Chow.
Meanwhile, Sunrise Industrial Co has almost 60 fragrances available for its range of candles and incense sticks and cones. Among the more exotic offerings are chocolate and orange and Indian gardenia, while traditional scents include sandalwood, patchouli and lavender.
"In order to remain competitive in this market, we needed to build a strong reputation, which comes from providing good quality products, on-time delivery and a reasonable price," says assistant merchandiser Lowell Luk.
"We also supply oil burners and incense holders, and a wide range of candle and incense gift packs," she adds.
Prices are available on application and fluctuate according to the cost of raw materials, while the minimum order for individual items depends on the product. For combinations, the minimum order is usually 5,000 sets. The firm delivers to main markets - including the US, France, Italy and the UK - within 30 days of confirmation of order.
As can be seen, experienced Hong Kong manufacturers are able to lift the mood and light the way with sweet, soothing aromas.
