They are essential ACCESSORIES all over the world, which makes name-card holders steady sellers in the gifts and premiums sector
A name-card holder says a lot about the user - a classic metal model is the mark of a serious, business-first professional while a funky leather option signifies a more laidback personality.
As such, the name-card holder is more than a business accessory, it is an ideal gift or premium item that impresses the recipient and makes a company stand out from the crowd.
Hong Kong manufacturers such as Winner Wise Ltd have been quick to spot the enormous potential in the name-card sector, manufacturing metal name-card holders that are popular with buyers looking for deluxe items.
The 12-year-old company, which also makes a range of metal gifts and desktop products, believes its flexibility is one of its competitive advantages. "We are able to do a customised design for as low as 1,000 pieces, with an affordable tooling charge," project engineer Ellen Tam claims. "Most of our items are conceived so that the designs can be changed readily, and the customer's theme or logo can be incorporated right into the item itself."
For example, she cites model NH-08, which measures 120x25x30mm and uses the letters O and X to hold the card and can easily be changed to become a company logo.
"The XO holder is unit-priced at US$1.50 FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of 1,000 pieces delivered 30 days after confirmation," Tam says, adding that equally popular is model CB-11, a combination block calendar and card holder that measures 67x59x40mm and is unit-priced at US$3.80.
Winner Wise's 2,000-square-metre, 300-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland has a monthly production capacity of 500,000 items. "Europe, especially France, Germany and Turkey, are our main markets," Tam reveals.
She believes that metal will continue to be a popular choice when it comes to name-card holders. "It offers advantages in terms of appearance and function," Tam maintains. "The finishing gives a high-end, executive and professional look, and metal is also more durable than other materials."
More eco-conscious users may prefer the leather name-card holders produced by Uni Industrial Ltd, which utilises "recycled" leather that is popular with customers.
"Recycled leather is about 70% cow leather and 30% chemical bonding agent, and uses the small pieces of leather that would normally be discarded," merchandiser Sonia Ngan explains, admitting that the five-year-old company's products also feature full leather and PU/fabric.
Two hot sellers are model number 484, a simple 65x100mm card holder, and the patented 216 version, an 80x100mm folded pop-up holder that features sections for easy filing. "All cards will easily pop up at the same time when the holder is opened," Ngan claims. "We are the only authorised manufacturer of the pop-up holder."
Uni requires minimum orders of 1,000 items, which are delivered 30-60 days after order confirmation from its Shenzhen factory that can produce 200,000 pieces per month. "Japan, Europe and the US are our main markets," Ngan adds.
Six-year-old le chino Ltd also has a minimum order of 1,000 pieces for its extensive selection of leather and electroplated zinc, iron and aluminium card holders and cases.
The company's philosophy is to create exquisite and distinctive premiums and gifts, claims director Carol Lee. "We currently have more than 250 card holder models and introduce new items twice a year," she says.
Themed collections are a specialty - for example, model MPL100357 is a name-card holder/memo pad combination that is part of the Joystick range of desktop items. "It's so named because the silicon used is movable and users enjoy the tactile experience," says Lee.
"Value-added is a trend for this type of product, especially desktop holders," she explains. "By providing items that have multiple functions, for example a memo pad and a holder, we add value and this benefits our customers."
The company manufactures at an ISO 9001- and TS16949-certified factory in Shenzhen that covers 300,000 square feet, employs 900 workers and can produce 120,000 items a month.
Many of le chino's products carry the Leatherchic and le boxy brands. "Our products range in price from US$2-3 FOB Hong Kong per item for minimum orders of 1,000 pieces delivered globally 25-30 days after confirmation," Lee says.
Focusing on colourful and fun card holders and cases made from metal and leather is Ben's Creation Int'l Ltd, which has an extensive selection from which to choose.
"Our customers are always looking for innovative quality products with trendy designs," claims marketing manager Wendy Woo. "We have an open mind when it comes to selecting materials and developing product designs."
For example, Ben's Creation's offers nine colour options, including a lime CS321 leather holder that measures 120x50x24mm, and an orange chrome-plated zinc alloy and leather version CS318 that measures 86x40x28mm.
The 12-year-old company's main markets for its metal stationery, desktop items and gifts are key sales areas such as Japan, Italy, Germany, Spain, France and the US.
Ben's Creation delivers minimum orders of 1,000 items 35 days after confirmation from its ISO 9001-certified factory in Shenzhen, which covers 300,000 square metres, employs 800 workers and is capable of producing 300,000 pieces each month. "We continually introduce new designs all year round," Woo comments.
Buyers seeking to make the best impression with their customers should obviously check out the exciting range of name-card holders available in Hong Kong.
