Elegance says it all when describing gift bag designs by Samsam Productions Ltd and, according to managing director Simon Li, the word also sums up the way the 25-year-old company has managed to survive in a highly competitive sector.
"Each month, about 15 million bags, featuring bead and metal handles, die-cut windows, ribbons, bows, tags, PVC windows with screen-printing or models with iridescent film printing come off the production lines at our Guangzhou factory on the Chinese mainland," he says.
"Sizes range from 3x4-inch models to the giant 18x23-inch Christmas gift bags that hold enough candy to last little ones a full year," he adds.
Samsam plans to turn its attention to more variety in printing, and to extra ornaments and attachments for its bags. "The gift bag market as a whole is moving towards designs that are more elegant," says Li.
Claiming variety as an important slogan and vital to success, he says, "Our in-house team currently designs 200-300 new styles each year, to add to our stable of 3,000 styles for buyers to choose from."
In 2001, Samsam began adding gift-wrap paper to its range, and monthly production of this item now stands at four million rolls.
To make gift-wrap paper, the first step is to produce the metallic paper. This is then coloured, and the final step is the embossing.
"Our five designers often transfer ideas, some of which they may have used in their gift bag designs, into creations suitable for this new line," says Li. "Often, bags and wrapping paper match each other."
Holographic designs are the latest attractions to find themselves on Samsam's gift bags and wrapping paper. "Another popular item, in production for 18 months now, is the polypropylene bag. This is so popular that we produce 100,000 of them daily," says Li.
Where do these bags eventually end up? "Our main market is the US, which accounts for 50% of total sales. The other half goes to Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America in equal proportions," he says.
Samsam's early years saw the company taking slow and careful steps, and it was not until 1993 that the company had its own factory. However, the company has made giant strides in the past few years.
This year, production figures for gift bags have already seen a two-digit increase over the corresponding period 12 months ago. "As for gift-wrap paper, we have seen a 30% increase in production since it first started coming off the lines," Li claims.
"Plans are to join a new 105,000-square-metre plant and 5,000 employees to our existing 70,000-square-metre factory and 2,300 workers," he reveals.
The new plant, also in Guangzhou and expected to be up and running by the end of 2003, should see Samsam as one of the largest producers of gift-wrap paper in Asia.
"The additional three, 1.2-metre automatic gift-wrap production lines ups our total number of lines to nine, and we are hoping for another 100% increase in output once the new factory opens."
