Terrific Trimmings(HKTDC Fashion - Fabrics & Accessories, Vol 01,2008)
Tapes & Webbings

Often overlooked by consumers, tapes and webbings are essential trimmings that add the perfect finishing touch to any outfit
They turn an ordinary piece of clothing into an item that reflects the owner's individual taste and style and also serve practical purposes on everyday garments such as underwear.
Whichever way you look at it, there is a never-ending need for the extensive selection of tapes and webbings available from Hong Kong manufacturers.
Fifteen-year-old Heng Li String and Braid Ltd specialises in fashionable trim, including lace, webbing, string and braid, that is keenly sought in Dubai, the US, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Germany, India and Italy.
"It is a competitive industry and therefore to be successful you must provide competitive pricing and quality," says marking executive Linda Kong, who adds that a quick turnaround time is also important and advises that the company delivers 5-10 days after confirmation.
Heng Li sources its raw materials, which include cotton, polyester and man-made silk, from a variety of countries such as Thailand, Pakistan and Korea. "We will also provide organic material choices, such as cotton, if the fabric is available because some customers may request this as concern for the environment grows," Kong comments.
The minimum order is 500 yards, products are manufactured at the company's Shenzhen factory and customer designs are welcome. "We put a lot of effort into promoting our products internationally so that we continue to develop and strengthen our position in the industry," Kong says.
Long-time player Wing Tat Haberdashery Co Ltd was founded in 1986 and has plans for major expansion. "We are expanding rapidly, and currently building a factory that when completed will be 10 times the size of the current factory," says export department manager Roger Or.
The company, which has three factories in Dongguan that cover 800,000 square feet, requires minimum order values of US$3,000 - though a special TEU rate is available.
Wing Tat's range includes fastener tape, woven tape and velvet ribbon, and new items are introduced twice a year. "Even though velvet ribbon is a deluxe product, it is currently a hot seller," Or comments.
The company identifies two product trends in the industry - an increase in ribbons that feature patterns and the use of wide ribbons as alternatives to belts and straps.
"The environment is also a big issue," Or adds. "We consider ourselves a socially responsible company and have selected only internationally accepted raw materials for our mass production."
He says materials are mainly sourced from Taiwan, Japan and the US.
"We put our emphasis on customers and quality, therefore, our mission is to provide the best service and highest quality," Or claims.
The Chinese mainland, the US and Europe are Wing Tat's main markets, and Europe is expected to post the biggest growth over the coming year.
Monthly production capacity of its three ISO 9001-certified factories varies depending on the product. "The estimated monthly production for velvet ribbon is 10 million metres, while for other ribbon it is approximately 20 million metres and for woven tape around five million metres," Or says, adding that delivery takes 7-10 days after confirmation.
Quantities determine delivery time at garment and furnishings accessory specialist K And K Trading Co Ltd, which counts several well-known international brands as customers.
Its extensive range includes webbing, cord, string and lace, which is a strong seller, says sales manager Kinny Wong. "Popular material choices are cotton, linen and metallic yarn," he says, adding that minimum orders depend upon the item selected. "We introduce new products at every important trade exhibition that we attend."
The company's 100,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan has a monthly production capacity of approximately 1.5 million metres. "One reason that customers source from us is that our products reflect current lifestyle trends and as such are popular with consumers," Wong claims.
Also focusing on quality control and quality products is Power Profit Elastic Fabric Ltd, which was founded in 1997 to manufacture elastic and non-elastic knitted and woven tape, cord string and velvet ribbon.
The Chinese mainland, the US and Europe are main markets for the company, which sources materials such as polyester, cotton and nylon from the mainland, Taiwan and Thailand.
The 11,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan has a monthly production capacity of five million metres and the minimum order is 5,000 metres, delivered approximately 2-4 weeks after confirmation.
The environment is a priority for the company, says marketing and sales executive Caroline Shek, noting that Power Profit has Oeko-Tex certification for many of its polyester and yarn-dyed products.
European centres test the materials for toxic substances such as formaldehyde, heavy metals and pesticides. "Customers can request Oeko-Tex products when making an order," Shek advises.
Proving yet again that quality comes first when dealing with Hong Kong manufacturers of tapes and webbings, who can always be relied upon to provide whatever the market demands.
