The Name Of The Game

Jointak Industrial Co Ltd's product line includes a monofilament and polyester woven label (top), a "little angel" puffing label and a PVC patch of the number "8"

Bright and colourful or subtle and discreet, badges and labels are an essential component of the garment and fashion industry. They carry instantly recognisable brand names, create unique product characteristics, and provide essential care and price information.

Whether decorative embroidered patches or functional price hang tags, Hong Kong manufacturers such as Many Ways Industrial Co supply a wide range of fun, funky and fashionable badges and labels.

Established in 1997, the company makes a wide range of woven and printed badges and labels, paper hang tags and paper shopping bags from its 5,000-square-foot facility in Hong Kong.

"Manufacturing in Hong Kong is easier for our customers, produces better quality and enables faster delivery," says sales executive Mark Wong.

Reflecting a reputation for quality and service are labels for such major brands as Puma and French label BCBG, he says. "We create all sorts of designs either according to our customers' requirements or to produce our own paper bags."

Exports go to Europe, Turkey, India and the US. "But we are continually looking for new markets," says Wong. The minimum order is 100 dozen, while delivery time, depending on quantity, is 7-10 days. Prices depend on complexity, size of artwork and quantity.

"We mostly use polyester and cotton sourced from Taiwan, the mainland and Japan," says Wong. "Demand is seasonal and also varies with fashion trends. Harry Potter woven badges, for example, are very popular now."

Jointak Industrial Co Ltd is another company that has grown into a major label manufacturer. Starting out in 1984, with just two looms and five staff, the company has expanded to more than 500 workers and 240 weaving, printing and processing machines occupying more than 13,000 square metres in Hong Kong and Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

Jointak produces woven, printed and special badges, labels and hang tags using sophisticated computerised production and such materials as silicon, rubber, PVC, real and PU leather, polyester, cotton and paper.

"The trend now is for very innovative labels in multi-colours and complex designs, not just the old style of woven yarn. Also, today, silicon is popular, as are other threads, besides cotton and polyester," says company spokesperson Maureen Wong.

"We offer sophisticated computerised design, colour and co-ordination," explains Wong. "We provide a one-stop-shop for labels and hang tags, and can supply our customers with everything they require."

Key export markets are the US, the UK and Australia. The company is also looking at the mainland market. "There is a lot of potential there because of the World Trade Organization membership and increased trading with the US," Wong feels.

Prices depend on the materials used, while there is no minimum order requirement and deliveries take 3-10 days. Yarns come from the mainland, Taiwan and the UK, which also supplies ribbons.

Also busy is New Power (HK) Ltd, providing a wide range of badges and labels including rubber and PVC patches, real and imitation leather and embroidery badges, PVC and paper hang tags, elastic cord and tape, zipper pulls and metal accessories for the garment industry.

Founded in 1994, New Power's business stance is to develop strong relationships with its customers by providing product solutions to all their badge and label needs.

The company employs about 700 workers at its two factories in Guangdong Province on the southern Chinese mainland boasting advanced manufacturing equipment and ISO 9001:2000 certification.

New Power's reputation for combining materials with new designs helps keep it at the forefront of the fashion industry. "We use different techniques and fabrics, such as adding PVC to woven labels and using printed twill for hang tags," says customer service executive Millie Liem. "And we have a laboratory to ensure the PVC we use is non-toxic."

Exports go to the US, Sweden, India, Indonesia, Egypt and Canada, while in Hong Kong a New Power label can often be seen on leading brand name fashions.

New Power's focus on business relationships extends to its flexible ordering practices for regular customers. "Our minimum order is 2,000 pieces, while sampling takes about one week and delivery times range from 2-3 weeks," she adds. Prices depend on size and quantity. PVC and plastic come from Germany, Korea and Japan.

Strong suits at Trio Labels Co Ltd, which recently achieved ISO 9001 certification, are woven labels and tapes, printed labels, printed hang tags, paper shopping bags, computerised embroidery, handwork beading, embroidery and PVC rubber badges.

Set up in 1986, the company employs 400 workers at a 13,000-square-metre facility equipped with the latest computerised techniques and machinery for weaving, embroidering and printing PVC badges and sundry items.

"Badges are very popular," says assistant manager Grace Tang. "But while the market is good, it has become more price-competitive. There is also a trend for more complicated designs and so badges in metallic colours are popular. However, most designs follow the customer's requirements."

Main markets include the US, Europe and Hong Kong, while additional markets include India, Korea, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. Prices vary depending on order size and requirements. The minimum order is 6,000 pieces with a delivery time of seven days.
