Japan Announces Adoption of New Care Labelling Symbols
According to the News Release published by the Consumer Affairs Agency, Government of Japan on 31 March 2015, the new care labelling standard (JIS L0001-2014) is approved to be implemented and will replace the current JIS L0217-1995. The new standard is regulated under the Household Products Quality Labelling Law and will become effective on 1 December 2016.
The new JIS L0001-2014 “Textiles – Care Labelling Code Using Symbols” increases the care symbols from 22 (JIS L0217-1995) to 41 symbols. The expanded information will provide consumers with more detailed information on awareness of the method and cost of caring for textile products when they are making purchases. JIS L0001-2014 is harmonized with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 3758:2012 “Textile – Care Labelling Code Using Symbols”.
The care information must be permanently attached to the textile product, either printed directly on the product or on a sewn in label. The label must be visible, indelible and easily accessible to the consumer. The new standard contains 5 basic textile care symbols in the order of washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional textile care treatments of dry and wet cleaning, and also a number of additional symbols. The care instructions must be expressed mainly in terms of symbols. Words may be used to supplement the symbols in cases where they are needed.
Once the implementation of the new standard is effective, textile products must be labelled with care symbols according to the JIS L001-2014 in order to be accepted in the Japanese market.
Note: these examples do not represent the sequence of care symbols or the same handling method.
