Spinning For Success

Yarns & Threads

HONG Kong is host to a substantial garment and textile sector that is strongly supported by manufacturers of yarns and threads. Many of these companies are also exporting to a global market that is always on the look-out for good-value products.

Dor Tak Thread Mfg Ltd offers a large number of packaging choices for its 100% spun polyester sewing thread and its 100% polyester embroidery thread. They are available on cones of 5,000m; a box of 10 spools or blister-packed as six or 12 spools; and on king-sized spools of 1,000m in blister packs and 2,000m on transparent hangers.

Marketing executive Eva Chan points out the convenience of having a choice of packaging arrangements. "We offer this service, and we also offer prompt delivery for up to 200 colours. These are exclusive products and [part of] customer services that are not easily available elsewhere. The product itself is made in our Chinese mainland factory where we have 200 people involved in spinning, dying, lubricating, finishing and packaging."

This 15-year-old company makes sewing and embroidery threads, elastic webbing and heat transfers. Threads in more than 200 colours can be delivered in four weeks, and the company exports to Europe, South America, the Middle East and Africa. It sources raw materials in Taiwan, Thailand and South Korea.

Hing Ping Int'l Textile Ltd manufactures a huge range of yarn and thread, such as dyed yarn and 100% spun polyester yarn produced by ring twist and two-for-one (TFO) machinery. Threads include 100% spun polyester sewing thread, poly/poly and poly/cotton corespuns and bonded nylon thread.

Using the brand HP Hong Kong, Hing Ping delivers in about 30 days. This two-year-old company exports to Australia, Bangladesh, the US, Peru, France, Poland, Italy and Sri Lanka.

Manager Lo Kit Wah explains the company's operations: "We have an office in Hong Kong, we have finishing and dye works in Shenzhen, we have spinning and finishing works in Shanghai, and we have a spinning mill in Beijing. So we control all aspects of our business. This is important.

"We focus strongly on quality because we're principally interested in dealing with the top end of the market, although when you look at our range, you can see we offer products across the whole spectrum," Lo says.

The minimum order value is US$10,000. "We generally expect larger orders than that, and we frequently contract to supply thread on a rolling basis for long periods," says Lo.

Hung Fung Industries Co Ltd, founded in 1979, has a vigorous thread-dyeing business. It takes raw thread from the Chinese mainland and dyes this at its 70-worker, 20,000-square-foot factory in Hong Kong.

"We buy in raw yarn, dye and condition it, and then commit it to running production as either yarn or thread," says sales manager Patrick Lung. "As a result we can deliver a standard order from stock in seven days, or get something more special out of production in a maximum of 14 days.

"We have a flexible minimum order: one or two CPM depending on whether we can cover freight costs. Our prices are keen, ranging from US$2.50 to US$4 per kilogram FOB Hong Kong."

Hung Fung's markets include Australia, Canada, South Asia and the Middle East.

Shui Lam (Int'l) Textiles Enterprises Ltd offers 100% spun polyester sewing thread yarn with counts of Ne20-Ne80. A 40/2 raw white version on a paper cone is priced at US$2.49 per kilogram FOB Hong Kong.

Founded in 1990, the company operates a 148,000-square-metre factory in Tianjin on the Chinese mainland and employs 4,300 workers. Monthly production is 900 tonnes, and minimum order is one TEU of assorted items.

Shui Lam's principal markets are in Southeast Asia, Europe, South Africa, North Africa and Central America.

Marketing manager Edmond Tse says consistency is the key. "We buy raw fibre for spinning from Thailand. We always select the same type, so that we can keep a completely consistent product quality. That's so important. The other thing that gives us an edge is that, working with one fibre, we have developed a special expertise, and so we can offer various qualities and thus cover many markets. We offer a competitive price structure and the right product."

Buttons

BUTTONS, although only small, serve a big purpose. Not only do they fasten clothes, but as an accessory they can be the final touch that makes the difference to an eye-catching outfit. The diverse selection produced by Hong Kong manufacturers spans the practical and decorative.

Mei Bond Int'l Co was established in 1985 and specializes in buttons made from shells. "The company's founders recognized the potential in this niche market. There was not a lot of competition when it started," says Redy Kwok, assistant to the director. Shells from Indonesia and Fiji are turned into a diverse selection of button shapes, sizes and colours.

Prices vary, depending upon size and detail. Buttons are available in mother-of-pearl, river shell and abalone, among other shells. Monthly production is 100,000 gross and minimum order is 10 gross, with delivery two weeks after order confirmation. Main export markets are Europe and the US.

Wing Sun Metal Products Ltd, established in 1976, manufactures a range of metal accessories including snap buttons and jeans buttons. The line of buttons reflects the firm's policy of providing competitively priced, innovative, quality products that conform to international standards. The ISO 9001-certified firm operates an in-house mould-development department and R&D facility, and accepts tailor-made and OEM orders.

Monthly production is 500,000 gross and minimum order for buttons is 30 gross, with delivery in 2-3 weeks. Wing Sun's products sell worldwide. Materials are sourced from Europe, while production takes place at its factory on the Chinese mainland.

Cheung Hing Hoo Button Mfy Co Ltd has almost 20 years' experience manufacturing a huge variety of buttons, including buttons for leather jackets and coats, laser logo and patterned buttons. Monthly production capacity for each range is substantial and can reach up to 15 million gross. Main export markets are the US, Europe, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and South America. Minimum order is 50-100 gross and lead time is two weeks.

"The company's success begins with the people. It has taken the hard work of a dedicated team to achieve our company's goals, our quality products and our success. Many of the staff have worked here for more than 10 years," says export manager Elaine Yeung. The company has ISO 9002 and Oko-Tex certification.

Established in 1975, Unit Metal Buttons Mfy Ltd manufactures tack buttons, snap buttons, pearl buttons and metal accessories for the garment, shoe and handbag industry. It uses brass, steel and alloy and makes any design upon request.

South Africa, Singapore, Pakistan, India, the UK and the US are the main markets. Minimum order is 10,000 sets per button style, although smaller orders will be considered. Lead time is 10 days. Production takes place at Unit Metal's factory in Guangdong Province, on the Chinese mainland.

Brilliant Metal Button Fty & Co Ltd has been in the metal button industry for 10 years. "We pride ourselves on our quality and ability to deliver on time, regardless of where customers are located," says merchandiser Flame Chan. The company has a wide selection of metal buttons - including embossed-pattern models and coloured snap buttons - made from brass, alloy, stainless steel, tin and aluminium.

Minimum order is 3,000 pieces and delivery is 14 days after order confirmation. According to Chan, prices can range from US$1 per gross, for a sample style, up to US$15 per gross for complex designs. Main markets are the US, Europe and Pakistan.

Established in 1968, Luk's Brothers Metal Button Fty & Co Ltd's core business is manufacturing garment accessories, including jeans buttons and snap buttons. "We have a long history of success. We maintain our competitive advantage by offering large production facilities in terms of manpower and machinery. We also continue to innovate," says Judy Chan, personnel and administration supervisor. A professional sales staff, she adds, is another factor in the company's success.

The firm has an extensive catalogue of buttons made for OEM clients, which include many well-known international companies. Sizes range from 6.35 to 25.4mm. Styles, designs, colours, patterns and shapes are based on customers' specifications. Tailor-made buttons are a feature of the company's manufacturing capabilities.

Main markets are Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, the US, the UK, Canada and the Middle East. Minimum order depends on the model, but can be as small as one dozen. Price is determined by the style and quantity ordered. Monthly production capacity is more than 100 million pieces. Delivery takes three days to one month, depending on product type and quantity.

What A Frill!

LACE & MOTIFS

WHEN clothing designers are looking for ways to add a touch of glamour, romance or pure style to a garment, lace or motifs often fit the bill. With the variety in materials, style, design and price available, a customer is guaranteed to find just the right product from Hong Kong's many embroidery and label manufacturers and traders.

Winget CYC Industrial Ltd makes lace both by machine and by hand. The company uses rayon from South Korea and Taiwan and cotton from the Chinese mainland in production at its 50,000-square-foot factory in Shantou, on the mainland. The design is based on any one of up to 100 new styles released each season, and the lace is usually dyed to match a customer's requirements. Ex-factory prices range from US$0.30-1 per yard.

Company director May Leung says Winget CYC has a very strong service team. "We're a very aggressive company, and can adapt easily to the requirements of any client," she says. "We react fast to new trends."

Delivery normally takes 2-3 weeks. Minimum order value is more than US$2,000 for either one or two items. The main market is the US, but the firm also exports to Europe, Australia and Japan.

Cheong Wah Piece Goods Ltd has been making lace materials and motifs for brassieres and garments since 1978. The company has its own factory in Zhongshan, on the Chinese mainland, where it makes lace using nylon, polyester, rayon and spandex. Much of the material comes from Indonesia and Thailand. "We normally deal with man-made fibres," explains company director Chan Wai-sze. "We also make lace trimmings. The material for this comes from China and Taiwan."

A 100% nylon raschel lace fabric costs about HK$8 (US$1.03) per yard. Lace made of a mix of 90% nylon and 10% spandex ranges from HK$16-29 (US$2.05-3.72) per yard; a 100% nylon lace fabric costs HK$22 (US$2.82) per yard. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

Cheong Wah requires a minimum order of 500 yards. It produces about 3,000 yards of each model per month. Delivery takes 2-4 weeks.

The firm usually sells to Hong Kong-based customers, who export to Europe and Southeast Asia. Chan says since many customers have been with the company for many years, it is familiar with their needs. "They know we can offer good quality at a competitive price," she says.

Wing Tat Computer Embroidery And Labels Co Ltd specializes in all kinds of high-definition woven patches, woven labels, machine direct embroidery, embroidery patches and handmade embroidery and lace.

Embossed patches are made from fabrics, including genuine and imitation leather, PVC, PU and 3M reflective material.

"Our lace can come in any shape, size, design and colour," says sales manager Anna Wu. Lace prices range from HK$1-10 FOB Hong Kong per half-metre piece. Minimum order is 500 dozen pieces for each item, using up to five colours.

Wing Tat uses polyester and cotton from the Chinese mainland at its 200-worker factory in Shenzhen, on the mainland. "With the cooperation of well-trained designers and experienced workers, a sense of good quality and punctual delivery, we are one of the best choices in the market," says Wu, adding that all Wing Tat products are azo-free.

The company exports to more than 20 countries, while its main market is the US. Bulk production can be delivered in 7-10 days; samples take 3-5 days.

As well as making a variety of lace and motifs, South West Weaving Fty also produces braid, string, tassels, real leather cord, PVC tape, beaded trimming and fringes. While some products are manufactured in Hong Kong, lace and motifs are machine-made in the company's 10-worker factory in Guangdong Province, on the Chinese mainland.

Lace is made from either cotton or polyester, both of which are sourced on the mainland. Prices start from HK$1 per yard FOB Hong Kong.

Company manager Violet Hung says 100 lace styles are on offer at any time. "Our in-house design is seasonal," she says.

South West Weaving delivers to customers in Hong Kong and Macau, and overseas clients are mainly based in Thailand, Australia and Sweden. Hung says the minimum order value is about HK$3,000 for local customers and HK$30,000 for overseas ones. "The client can choose whether they want their goods shipped from Shenzhen or Hong Kong," she adds. Delivery takes 2-3 weeks.
