Shui Lam (Int'l) Textiles Enterprises Ltd

Specialized in grey yarn manufacturing, Shui Lam (Int'l) Textiles Enterprises Ltd is now developing advanced yarns for the latest state-of-the-art fabrics.

SHUI Lam (Int'l) Textiles Enterprises Ltd has developed unique expertise from its devotion to producing 100% spun polyester sewing thread yarns. Founded in 1990, Shui Lam, now the largest supplier of such products to Hong Kong's substantial garments and textile sector, claims an almost 80% market share.

"Capitalizing on our special knowledge in grey (raw white and optical white) yarn manufacturing, we are now taking things a step further to develop advanced yarns that complement the latest state-of-the-art fabrics," says managing director Chan Chor Lam.

"These new raw materials are heat and static electricity resistant. They can also be put to use in uniforms for firemen, for example, and many industrial applications," he adds.

In 2002, in response to market demand, Shui Lam also launched corespun sewing thread yarns, which are made using an extremely tough polyester filament core, coated with polyester or cotton staple, with enhanced strength and softness for perfect stitching.

Chan says consistency gives the company an edge. "We buy the finest raw materials for spinning from Thailand Teijin, which is owned by our Japanese supplier, and we stick with the same material to guarantee reliable and consistent products. Finally, we have strict quality control procedures across the whole production process," he says.

The managing director believes that this dedicated approach leads naturally to a professional image and good reputation in the market.

"We supply first class 1.2DX38mm Bright High Tenacity and Low Elongation quality yarns in a wide range of counts and different packaging, ranging from Ne20 to Ne80 in single, double and multiple plies," he says.

Major markets for these yarns are in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Shui Lam is also striving to gain a foothold in Europe, Japan and the US. "Seeing an increasing demand for quality yarns on the mainland, we will also try to increase domestic sales and strengthen our distribution network there," Chan says.

Shui Lam employs more than 4,200 staff at its Hong Kong office and factory in Tianjin on the Chinese mainland. Production at the 180,000-square-metre factory amounts to 800-1,000 tonnes of sewing threads and yarns a month.

"Tianjin is one of the mainland's traditional production bases for textiles manufacturing and it is easy for us to find and employ the skilled labour and technicians we need," says Chan.

"Tianjin also has highly efficient port facilities," he adds. "The prime location of our factory allows easy access to major highways and we can assure customers of prompt and speedy deliveries."

Advanced equipment plays a crucial role in minimizing production errors. "Apart from our existing machinery, we continue to invest in highly advanced equipment to upgrade our production lines," Chan notes.

"With the growing concern over human ecological matters, we applied for and were granted Oeko-Tex Standard 100, for baby articles by TESTEX (Swiss Textile Testing Institute)," he says.
