Tapes & Webbings
A leading international fashion centre, Hong Kong has long been synonymous with the essential extras
Nothing finishes a garment quite like elegant and fashionable trimmings such as the tapes, ribbons and webbings that come in a bewildering selection of materials, sizes and colours.
Given Hong Kong's extensive experience in the fashion industry, it's little wonder that many international buyers come to the city to source these final finishing flourishes.
There are many other good reasons why seasoned buyers prefer to source in Hong Kong compared with other countries that also produce similar products, if not of the same quality.
"We are a one-stop-buying shop for international customers," claims Landwell Corp Ltd Director Reuben Chu, whose firm has been in operation for the last 18 years.
"It is easy and convenient to source garment accessories in Hong Kong because we are located in one area - not like China or Vietnam, for example, where customers may need to spend a lot of time travelling around to find different types of products."
Landwell specialises in supplying all sorts of elastic or non-elastic webbing, cords and string - including button-hole elastic, grey or black anti-slip elastic, elastic with cord and woven twill elastic. "No matter whether buyers require woven, knitted, crocheted, jacquard, braided elastics or non-elastics, we can meet their requirements," Mr Chu assures.
The company's products include knitted webbing, a multipurpose material which Mr Chu says is "extremely cost-effective" and widely used in different industries. "Non-woven webbing is also available, in a variety of fibres including cotton, nylon and PP," he adds. "Solids, multis and jacquard patterns offer an unlimited array of looks to enhance a strap line."
Landwell's selection of fine-knitted webbings is popularly used in underwear and sportswear. "We have elastic or non-elastic strings or cords," Mr Chu advises. "Strings and cords are very useful for garments, shoes or fashion."
Equally prolific is Lucky Weaving Lace Co Ltd, which has spent more than 40 years in the haberdashery weaving industry and during that time has developed an exhaustive product range.
This includes lace, fabric, satin and rayon ribbon, torchon, jacquard and special variety tape, handcrafted items, bead and velvet tape, check ribbon, trimming, cord and reflective tape, organza tape, woven labels and elastic tape.
This diverse range of products is tailor-made to meet the demands of worldwide markets and finds its way onto the likes of fashion garments, toys and household products such as pillow cases and curtains.
"They are fashionable enough to meet the needs of the garment industry as well as shoemakers and handbag and gift suppliers," stresses Export Sales Manager Mike Hui.
He says that Lucky Weaving's advanced computerised weaving machinery imported from Europe ensures that the company's products are 100% top quality. "We welcome all kinds of customers, both locally and abroad, and can handle small or large order quantities," Mr Hui assures. "Quality and high standards are of the utmost importance."
He notes that the Hong Kong fabrics and accessories industry is changing as more international guidelines and standards are put in place. "We must adhere to them in order to maintain a high level of business," Mr Hui admits.
Lucky Weaving complies with the Oeko-Tex dyeing standards, which ensures that all dyes used are non-toxic and environmentally friendly. "Many overseas customers expect us to meet these new standards," Mr Hui notes. "For us, meeting them can only enhance our company and the Hong Kong industry's position."
Also committed to meeting the highest standards and quality control benchmarks is Sel Fung Enterprises Ltd, which is ISO 9901-certified and meets the Testex Oeko-Tex Standard 100 for dyed, printed and finished elastic webbings made of polyester, nylon, cotton, rubber and lycra.
Established in 1989 the company manufactures an assortment of textile products, particularly 'fancy items' for the garment industry, and works with many leading brands.
Key products include lace, cotton lace, polyester lace, nylon lace, computer lace, Taiwanese lace, elastic cotton lace, Japanese cotton and double face cotton lace, woven and knit elastic, cotton twill and piping tape, velvet ribbon and rayon grosgrain. "We are very concerned about quality control, so we employ Hong Kong staff as managers of different departments," explains Director's Assistant Rebecca Luk.
Sel Fung's factory on the Chinese mainland has more than 400 lace machines, including some 70 computer lace machines, approximately 120 woven lace machines and around 250 knit lace machines. "We also have approximately 12 dyeing machines, including eight big dyeing machines and some small dyeing machines," Ms Luk adds.
She says this sophisticated equipment helps Sel Fung guarantee its production quality and helps ensure it is flexible when it comes to meeting clients' requests when there is a short production time and changes need to be made swiftly.
"We liaise closely with our client and design team to ensure quick changes are made efficiently and correctly," Ms Luk assures, adding that the company may waive sample charges in order to satisfy both new and existing customers.
Given this product and quality commitment, it is obvious that no other manufacturing centre matches Hong Kong when it comes to providing the perfect finishing touch.
