Fashion - Fabrics & Accessories Vol 2, 2010: Supplier Spotlight: Ribbon Accessories
Sometimes it is the little things that make all the difference, and this is exactly the philosophy behind the success of ribbon accessories producer Beta Wealth Co Ltd.
The 23-year-old enterprise prides itself on its handmade items such as bows and rosettes, which are often intricate, delicate and very small.
“Basically, you get a better product by doing it by hand, and designers love to come up with different shapes that you might not be able to adapt your machines to,” explains Assistant Marketing Manager Jobia Keung.
About 80% of Beta Wealth’s bows and rosettes are made by hand, with the balance by machine.
These items are sought by customers in the US, Europe and Asia for use on various types of clothing including bridal gowns, lingerie, knitwear and children’s wear.
“We produce our own designs, but as most of our customers are garment and underwear manufacturers with their own ideas we also work with them to develop the accessories they need.”
The company uses mainly polyester satin ribbons, but also grosgrain and organza — all of which are sourced on the Chinese mainland.
“We offer a wide range of standard colours — about 196 of them,“ advises Ms Keung. “The most popular are what we call the basics — black, white, pink, cream, light blue and nude. These are our ‘bread and butter’ and we always keep quantities in stock so that we can respond to orders quickly.”
She adds that Beta Wealth also meets customers’ requests by matching the Pantone colours or swatches they send. “Sometimes we use more unusual styles, such as gingham checks or prints of floral designs, or, as we did recently for a customer, of dogs.”
Closely monitoring fashion trends, the company has observed the popularity of purple, gold and silver colours for fall and winter 2009.
“We continue to develop products in gold and silver for 2010,” advises Ms Keung. “We are also developing a lot of tiny bows in narrow ribbon, such as 1/16th-inch width, for the coming year. This contrasts with the bigger bows that were fashionable last year.”
Beta Wealth, which did 70% of its business with US buyers when it first started, has seen a big change in its customer base in recent years.
“Today, our biggest market is Europe, particularly Italy, Spain, France, the UK, Poland and Latvia. We also have customers in Israel and Mexico, as well as the US,” Ms Keung notes.
The manufacturer seeks to expand sales into the Middle East and Asia — particularly the Chinese mainland and Malaysia — in the coming years, employing various marketing channels.
“We participate in trade exhibitions, especially in Europe, and we advertise in Hong Kong Trade Development Council publications, which we have found to be a good platform to promote our products,” says Ms Keung.
The firm is positive about its future. “The fashion world will continue to demand these beautiful adornments to a wide range of clothing, and we are confident we will continue to expand our ribbon business,” Mr Keung remarks.
Beta Wealth’s ribbon accessories are without doubt little beauties that look likely to add lustre to apparel items as well as buyers’ ledgers.
