Smart In All Seasons
|Ling Nam Neckwear Mfg Ltd produces classically elegant 100% silk ties and 100% polyester scarves for export to Latin America and the UK|
Shawls, scarves, and neckties are indispensable accessories for the well-groomed lady and the well-dressed man - and very much in demand -which is why Hong Kong manufacturers have so much to offer, season after season.
Take the range offered by Ling Nam Neckwear Mfg Ltd, for example. Ling Nam presents fashionable scarves and men's ties with a European flair - very much sought after items according to director Vincent Chong.
"We spoil customers with new in-house creations each season," he says. "We are also happy to produce according to buyers' specifications."
He says products may also bear the company's registered brand names of Luca Massei, Attacco and Umano.
Typical woven or printed silk items from Ling Nam cost from US$5.50 each FOB Hong Kong. A 100% silk scarf costs US$7, and a 100% polyester chiffon striped scarf US$1.55. Most of the raw materials come from the Chinese mainland.
Supported by a 7,000-square-metre, 150-worker mainland factory in Zhejiang Province, Ling Nam produces up to 150,000 neckties and scarves monthly. The minimum order is 100 pieces per design or colour, for delivery 30 days after confirmation of order.
"Latin America and the UK remain our major markets, and have been since our incorporation in 1996," says Chong. "We have our own agent in Latin America dealing with local wholesalers and importers, while we work directly with various chain stores in the UK."
For something a little different, fur accessories from Practical Int'l Trading Co provide a luxurious option that is both warm and charming.
Sales manager Dixon Chow says that, with the company utilising fine quality material from the mainland and Europe, the unit price of a cashmere shawl with peacock feathers is at least US$50 FOB Hong Kong. A typical multi-coloured/dyed rabbit fur scarf costs US$15 minimum, while brooches come in the range of US$1-3 per piece.
"We have 150 skilled workers at our 25,000-square-metre mainland manufacturing facility in Dongguan, which produces up to 50,000 scarves and 200,000 brooches each month. The rest of the capacity is occupied by our apparel and handbag lines," Chow says.
Practical Int'l has established a worldwide clientele since its incorporation in 1991, with Europe and Japan being the most important footholds. Just 12 months ago, the company launched its own brand name, Practical, targeting Europe and the domestic market in Hong Kong.
"We are very professional and customer-oriented," says Chow. "With our reasonable prices and prompt deliveries, we serve many international brand names and reputable department stores overseas."
Practical Int'l requires single orders to meet minimum requirements of 500 scarves or 1,000 brooches. Delivery is 3-4 weeks after order confirmation.
Another trading firm, Poontex Co Ltd, founded in 1969, offers scarves, shawls, and neckwear in a profusion of material including silk, cashmere, polyester and rayon - all sourced from the mainland.
"We collaborate closely with a network of manufacturers in Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces, some with more than 10 years' working relationships with us. All are very reliable in terms of quality and delivery," assures managing director Kenneth Poon.
Counting on these long-time partners, Poontex can produce up to 100,000 scarves and 150,000 neckties a month. "It's a very competitive market, yet with our comprehensive service and reasonable prices, we still manage to retain a number of loyal customers. We also acquire new ones through word-of-mouth and advertising," continues Poon.
The unit price of a silk and polyester woven or printed necktie from Poontex is less than US$1 FOB Hong Kong. A 100% silk printed scarf costs US$3.50-4.00, while 100% rayon hand-knitted scarves are US$5 each.
Working on an OEM basis, Poontex sells mainly to importers in the US, Canada and Europe. The company requires a minimum order value of US$5,000 and delivery takes place 45-50 days after order confirmation.
On the glamour front, with a full range of products encompassing bridal gowns, party dresses and evening bags, 20-year-old Champaign Int'l Enterprises Ltd also offers special beaded, embroidered and hand-crocheted shawls.
"We offer up-market, high quality fashion accessories that grace the shelves of prestigious department stores and boutiques in Europe and Japan and the shoulders of many elegant ladies," says general manager C M Chow.
Beaded and embroidered rectangular shawls (models 12479/12480) cost US$9.80 each FOB Hong Kong. A hand-crocheted, mixed-colour, dyed triangular shawl (model 1685) costs US$7.50, while a hand-crocheted, floral patterned triangular shawl (model 12015) costs US$11.80.
Champaign creates nearly 500 designs each year, with exports under private labels or its own brand name. "Sometimes, customers provide their own specifications," says Chow. "Most of our scarves and shawls are made from fine cotton and rayon sourced on the mainland, where we operate a 9,000-square-metre, 300-worker factory in Chaozhou. Production capacity is up to 30,000 shawls/scarves monthly."
He says that the minimum order is 1,000 pieces for delivery one month after order confirmation.
Fashions may be fickle but Hong Kong fashion accessories clearly have pleasing staying power.
