Man Cheong (Chong's) Development & Trading Co offers beaded flourishes, handmade buttons and decorative frog beading.

COMPANIES in the fashion industry must run hard to keep up with the latest trends, which change with each new season. The makers of trimmings for clothes and other fashion items are no exception. Fortunately, trends come in multiples so producers can cater to different tastes. The latest hot items include lace, beads and fancy bra straps.

Powick Ltd has a wide range of products to meet different customer demands. The company uses quality ribbon from the US and other materials from South Korea and Japan, and has an extensive network of sources on the Chinese mainland.

"Our customers keep coming to our office with different requirements so we keep on top of the trends," says company director Rita Au Yeung. "We've done a whole series with lace and fur as this has been the trend for a couple of years now. Lately the direction has been towards fusion where you use different kinds of material in one piece."

Trimming work is usually labour-intensive. Although machines can do some of the cutting and sewing, buttons and other items require a human touch to come out right. "A lot of our products are handmade because that makes them look better, especially patchwork," says Au Yeung.

Powick keeps its prices competitive, requires a minimum order value of US$3,000 and ships in four weeks at the latest. In addition to trimmings, the company makes crocheted items, puffy items, sequin and bead items, ribbon bows and roses, and corsages for export mainly to the UK, Italy, Spain and the US. Factories in Shantou, Foshan and Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland employ 2,000 workers.

Apart from lace, fur and fusion, another popular item is beadwork. Man Cheong (Chong's) Development & Trading Co has received a lot of orders lately for bead trimming. Each month the company produces more than one million pieces of handmade buttons, frog beading and bead trimming at its factory in Xiamen on the Chinese mainland.

"Bead trimming is a very hot item in the market now. The beads come from Taiwan and Japan, subject to the customer's request," says Man Cheong spokesperson Cynthia Cheung. "If a customer wants a certain type of material, we will find what they want and produce either to their design or our own design."

Man Cheong sources basic materials, such as nylon, rayon and polyester from the Chinese mainland but will look elsewhere for materials, depending on the customer's preferences. Major markets are the US, Europe and Japan. Minimum order is 2,000-5,000 pieces, depending on the product, for shipment 2-3 weeks after order confirmation.

Another trendy trimming item is fancy bra straps. Garland Industries & Haberdashery Co Ltd produces many types of products, including ribbon bows, Chinese buttons, frog beading, rhinestone trims, crochet work, embroidered lace and ultrasonic lace. But the bra straps are growing in popularity. The straps, filled with oil and containing glitter and other eye-catching items, are clearly not meant to be hidden under clothes.

"Many people have started ordering these shoulder straps. It started happening last year and orders are increasing this year," says Garland spokesperson Tina Cheung.

The orders are coming from around the world as Garland has markets in the US, Europe, Indonesia and Israel. The bra straps are a new line but have not eclipsed some of Garland's other specialities, in particular Chinese buttons, beading and lace.

"We produce traditional Chinese decorative buttons and also normal types of buttons. We get our raw materials mainly from Taiwan," Cheung says.

There is no minimum order, though special orders require a minimum of 3,000 yards. Shipment is within two weeks. Garland Industries has two factories on the Chinese mainland, in Fujian Province and Dongguan, employing a total of 1,500 workers.

Pacter Mfe Ltd also produces a wide range of fashion accessories including woven labels, hang tags, badges, boxes, tape, lanyards, belts, bags, patches, bracelets and chokers. It puts a strong emphasis on quality and trains its staff in quality control.

"Our products are 100% quality-assured. We do not just produce good samples but good products as well," says general manager Andy Fung. "We visit exhibitions to look at what the market lead is in Europe and Japan and we make use of these ideas in our products."

Fung says Pacter exports worldwide and provides good prices and fast delivery. Shipping time and minimum orders depend on the products. Founded in 1989, the company has a 4,000-square-foot factory in Guangdong on the Chinese mainland, employs 500 workers and sources materials from Japan, Taiwan and Europe.

Jazzing Up Garments

Power Profit Elastic Fabric Ltd is adept in manufacturing elastic tape including this blue woven model with logo.

GARMENT tape plays an important role in the clothing industry. With the development of more complex forms and designs, its applications have multiplied from being a mere practical fastening to decorating apparel, accessories and other fashion products.

"We offer a profusion of elastic tape, crocheted string, metallic braid and cord which is suitable for garments, handbags, shoes, sporting ware, and even for toys, furniture, stationery and mobile phone holders," says William Tong, spokesperson for Heng Li String And Braid Ltd.

Founded in 1993, the company counts Europe as its main market and exports to the US and the Middle East as well.

"We work mainly on OEM orders, with prices ranging from US$1.60 to US$76 per 100 metres FOB Hong Kong. It all depends on the design and the raw materials, with models using metallic yarn usually more expensive," explains Tong.

Heng Li uses polyester, nylon and rayon yarn from Taiwan, Japan and Malaysia and manufactures out of its 5,000-square-metre, 200-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. It requires a minimum order value of US$1,000 and normally delivers in 2-4 weeks.

Many Ways Industrial Co specializes in woven tape that jazzes up apparel. OEM orders come from factories in Hong Kong, as well as buyers from Japan and the US.

"We have our factory here in Hong Kong which occupies a floor area of 4,000 square feet. We can achieve a monthly capacity of 15 tonnes," says sales executive Karen Ng.

Setting itself apart from many of its counterparts that have established their manufacturing bases on the Chinese mainland, Many Ways believes its niche lies in quick response.

"Hong Kong is a fashion hub where we can stock raw materials speedily, and labour has the technical capability and is more dedicated. These factors enable us to achieve prompt delivery," says Ng.

She points out that since Many Ways' sole material, polyester, is imported from Taiwan, it makes no cost difference where the production takes place. "With manufacturing in Hong Kong, the cost structure is more straightforward; there are more unforeseeable costs involved with offshore production lines," says Ng.

Its Hong Kong production has not weakened Many Ways' competitiveness in terms of pricing - a 10mm woven tape is priced at US$0.30 per metre on average. Minimum order is negotiable and delivery takes 2-4 weeks.

Established in 1997, Power Profit Elastic Fabric Ltd manufactures a wide array of jacquard tape, elastic bands, woven tape and cord, which are widely used in garments and accessories, from underwear to sports bags.

"We are the manufacturing arm of Hang Seng Trading Co, which was incorporated in 1962. Therefore we already have an established customer base in the US, Europe, the Chinese mainland and Australia," says director Samuel Chan.

Processing polyester and PP from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Chinese mainland and elastic thread from Thailand, Power Profit's 1,000-square-metre, 250-worker factory in Dongguan on the mainland produces 80,000 gross (11.52m yards) of tape a month.

"Our factory is well equipped with different machinery, which allows us to offer a variety of products. Though we work solely on OEM orders, we are known for our efficiency in product development and comprehensive sourcing network for raw materials," says Chan.

Power Profit requires a minimum order of 30 gross per style and delivery takes 1-4 weeks depending on the complexity of design.

"Pricing also varies with designs. A 40mm jacquard elastic costs around US$0.25 per metre FOB Hong Kong on average," says Chan.

Sunrise Textile Accessories (Trading) Co Ltd works closely with its buyers to develop different products, ranging from webbing tape to elastic straps and fastener tape.

"Currently, webbing tape in contrasting-colour stripes is very hot, as well as tape with embossed effect motifs that are done by ultrasound machines," says managing director Victor Law.

Though incorporated only three years ago, Sunrise Textile Accessories has expertise in garment tape manufacturing through its mother company, Wing Cheong Hong Int'l Ltd, which has been in the business for the past two decades.

"We source our raw materials, mostly polyamide and nylon, from Taiwan. They come reasonably priced, and most important of all, with quality that is acceptable to our buyers from the US, Canada, Mauritius, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Africa and the Chinese mainland," says Law.

Sunrise has a 300,000-square-foot, 2,000-worker factory in Shenzhen on the mainland. Garment-tape manufacture makes up only part of production as the company also produces shoulder pads and bra cups. Monthly production capacity for garment tape is 10 TEUs.

"The average price of an embroidered cotton tape varies from US$0.21 to US$0.28 per metre FOB Hong Kong. We require a minimum quantity of 3,000-5,000m per style and deliver in two weeks," says Law.

Vibrant Closures

SBS Zipper (HK) Co Ltd designed these durable plastic zippers ideal for use in sports bags and fashion items.

THE humble zipper has undergone a major facelift. Dowdy colours are out. Bright colours, patterns and special features are most definitely in. Hong Kong manufacturers are at the forefront of this makeover, creating new designs and lively products to whet the appetites of buyers around the world.

SBS Zipper (HK) Co Ltd is at the cutting edge of zipper technology. The company was one of the first zipper manufacturers on the Chinese mainland to gain ISO 9002 certification. Its two factories on the mainland employ 3,000 workers and produce 30 million pieces per month. This huge capacity enables the company to produce a full range of zippers and pullers in nylon, plastic and metal in sizes ranging from No. 3 to No. 30.

Moulding, plastic injection and tape knitting are all carried out on site. "We don't use subcontractors so we can easily maintain high-quality work and keep prices down," says merchandiser Heidi Ng.

SBS also keeps a close watch on market trends. "Fashion trends change quickly so we are always looking for new ways to grab people's attention," says Ng.

This season's special items feature a bumper size No. 30 plastic zipper suitable for a sports bag and a zipper with transparent teeth and puller. "We can make any design or logo according to a customer's needs," adds Ng. Minimum order is 3,000 pieces per colour and the lead time after order confirmation is 7-14 days.

Hang Sang Zipper Co Ltd makes all types of zippers at its 350-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. "We do everything in the market," says manager WP Cheng. "Quite popular at the moment are water-resistant zippers."

These zippers are ideal for bags and clothing designed for outdoor use. They have the added advantage of being very durable. The US is the main market for the water-resistant zippers. All the zippers meet ASTM standards.

The company buys polyester yarn from Taiwan and knits the tape at its factory. PVC and plastic chips are also sourced in Taiwan while zinc alloy, brass and aluminium are mostly purchased from the mainland. "The materials are good quality and the supply is stable," says Cheng.

Hang Sang boasts a full production line. "We have our own machines so we can put patterns on tape and make transparent and reflective zippers," says Cheng. "We can make moulds for zinc alloy and soft plastic pullers too." This enables the company to make any pattern or logo according to a client's specifications.

Cheng also has his eye on the fashion market. "The zipper is only an accessory and must follow fashion trends - so we must respond quickly and flexibly to our customers' needs," he says.

Cheng adds that about half the current clientele have been loyal customers for more than 10 years.

There is no minimum order and delivery is usually one week after receipt of a confirmed order. A pre-production sample can be ready in one week.

Beauty Bond Ltd has 20 years' experience in the zipper business. During this time the company has established an impressive sales network with branch offices in Europe, South America and Hong Kong. The company's factory on the Chinese mainland employs about 1,000 workers and has ISO 9002 certification.

Beauty Bond produces a full range of zippers, fasteners and other garment accessories such as multi-coloured PVC patches (single- or double-sided), 2D and 3D plastic patches. The company carries out die-casting and injection moulding on site.

"We can make any mould to suit the customer's requirements," says company representative Steven Lam. A pre-production sample takes about 10 days to produce.

Lam is reluctant to give a fixed price, noting that quantity ordered affects cost. "We can give a discount if we receive cash payment in advance." Once an order is confirmed, the products are turned around quickly. "If the goods are sent by air, we can usually deliver within three days," says Lam.

Flexibility is the key to success at Luen Hing Ho Material Supplies Ltd. Fashion products form a core part of the business and the company catalogue bursts with vibrant colours and creative designs.

"Colours and designs may be in fashion for just one season so we must be very adaptable," says sales executive Rebecca Leung.

Special features include zippers with different colours on opposing sets of teeth, transparent teeth and different coloured threads. "We can also print wording on the reverse side of the zipper, making it suitable for reversible clothing," Leung adds.

Luen Hing Ho sources most materials from the Chinese mainland. Moulding and plastic injection are carried out at its 300-worker factory in Dongguan on the mainland. Delivery time depends on quantity but goods are usually ready to leave the factory 7-10 days after order confirmation.
