Canada Updates Beach Robe Criteria under the Children’s Sleepwear Regulations

The Children’s Sleepwear: Flammability Requirement Guidelines1 provide manufacturers, importers and retailers help to identify children’s sleepwear products, and the guidelines help the industry to comply with the requirements of the Children’s Sleepwear Regulations established under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA).

Children’s bathrobes, dressing gowns, housecoats and robes in sizes up to and including 14X, other than those designed for infants up to 7kg, that are imported, advertised, or sold in Canada must comply with the “loose-fitting sleepwear” flammability, flame retardant and labelling requirements set out in the Children’s Sleepwear Regulations.

Health Canada has recently released the “Bathrobes Information Bulletin”2 indicating the update of the “Maximum Dimensional Criteria for the Length of a Beach Robe”. Under the section for "Children’s Bathrobes, Dressing Gowns, Housecoats and Robes”, it is recommended that any waistline belts, ties or sashes on these products should be stitched firmly to the centre back. Any type of cord that can be detached from clothing may be a strangulation risk for young children.

"Garments that resemble bathrobes, dressing gowns, housecoats and robes, are considered as such.”

According to the Children’s Sleepwear Regulations, there are exceptions for robes that are promoted as beachwear or beach cover-ups.  These items of beachwear or beach cover-ups must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Entire front length of the garment closes with Velcro, buttons, zipper, etc
  • No exterior belt
  • Maximum lengths (M-N) must not exceed those given in the table below.
