Electronic Security Products

Security and surveillance is big business at Protronic (FE) Ltd, which manufactures for such leading brands as Lorex and RadioShack

A blend of innovation, excellent design and quality manufacturing has established Protronic (FE) Ltd as a leading manufacturer of electronic security products.

A flagship company of the Protronic Group, Protronic (FE) was established in 1997 to diversify the successful business of the founding company, automotive products manufacturer Precision Enterprise Ltd.

Today, Precision continues to specialise in manufacturing electronic automotive products, while Protronic has expanded into monitoring and surveillance, with both sharing a manufacturing facility.

The group employs about 25 staff in its Hong Kong office and a further 250, including more than 100 engineering team members, in its factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

The major market for the Protronic Group's automotive electronic products such as car battery chargers, power inverters and parking sensors is Europe, where it has a number of strategic partnerships and has established its own Pro-User brand.

However, its security products are sold mostly in North America, where Protronics established ProVista Security Solutions for its own ProVista brand security products in 2004. "The majority of our business is with two major clients in North America which have their own brands - Lorex and RadioShack," Associate Director Benson Wong explains.

Business in security products is about 95% OEM/ODM and about 5% Protronic's own brand. "Automotive products comprise 15%-20% our own brand," Mr Wong adds.

Protronic's range of security and surveillance products includes CCTV systems, cameras, digital video recorders and security monitors including baby monitors.

FOB unit prices range are US$14-15 for a simple camera to US$300 for a digital wireless receiver bundled with four digital wireless cameras.

Digital wireless technology, according to Mr Wong, is one of the areas in which the company sees strong potential market growth, and on which it is currently focused.

"One of our newest items is digital wireless monitoring systems that are free from analogue interference, while the other is portable video recorders using Secure Digital (SD) cards."

The Protronic group launches around 80-100 new products annually, all of which are manufactured in its US$50m, 20-production-line Dongguan factory.

The plant is ISO 9001- and QC 080000-certified and has been completely compliant with RoHS since 2006 - one of the first manufacturers in China to implement the policy.

These initiatives helped Protronic's wireless power monitoring alert system win a Consumer Product Design Award in the 2008 Hong Kong Awards for Industries.

Protronic's CEO Steve Chuang was also recognised in the 2007 Young Industrialist Awards organised by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries.

Protronic continues to design and develop a wide range of new electronic security products in order to take maximum advantage of the eagerly awaited economic upturn. "We are confident about the future - things will improve," Mr Wong confidently concludes.
