Kwang Sung Electronics HK Co Ltd manufactures switching mode power supplies for use in DVD receivers, wireless speaker systems, set-top boxes and other home theatre applications

The current consumer electronics trend towards packing more powerful features into ever-smaller packages is fuelling increasing demand for better quality, higher frequency transformers.

Needless to say, highly experienced Hong Kong transformer manufacturers such as Kwang Sung Electronics HK Co Ltd are up to the task. "There is an increasing demand for quality, reflecting the stricter regulations for electromagnetic current and electromechanical interference within smaller packages," observes sales and marketing executive Pat Shum.

Kwang Sung manufactures a range of digital audio broadcasting modules, AM/FM tuner modules, transformers and switching mode power supplies (SMPS) at its 17,900-square-metre, ISO 9001- and QS 9000-certified facility in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.

The company's transformers are often included in SMPS, which are targeted at DVD receivers, wireless speaker systems, set-top boxes and other home theatre applications.

Its products include surface mounted devices (SMD) transformers, Baluns transformers, backlight transformers and SMPS for high-end DVD receivers produced by international names like Thomson, LG and Samsung.

"We have a number of standard designs, but customers will often provide us with specifications so our R&D team can modify one of our standard designs," Shum explains.

Kwang Sung, which has an annual turnover of US$77m, produces three million tuners a month for sale in major markets such as Europe, the US, the Chinese mainland, Japan and Korea.

Europe is also the major sales outlet for Vicco Industries Ltd's extensive range of high frequency and pulse transformers, although Hong Kong and Japan are also important markets.

Vicco's audio transformers are found in video compact disc players and audio amplifiers, its pulse transformers are used in computers, peripherals, cameras and telephones, and its AC line filters are indispensable in UPS, communication power and personal computer applications.

They are manufactured at the 11-year old company's ISO 9001-certified factory in Dongguan on the mainland, which covers 1,200 square metres and employs 80 workers, including three engineers.

Manager So Kwok Sum says Vicco has a minimum order quantity of 10,000 units delivered two weeks after order confirmation. "Business has been steady the past three years and we expect it to continue that way," So adds.

Traditional markets like the US and Europe are equally important for Click Technology Ltd, whose transformer offerings include power, encapsulated, bell, switching and communications models that carry the CLiCK brand.

"We offer one of the widest ranges of transformers in the market, including several leading edge products, which is why we have been successful in the US and European markets where quality is an important concern," claims sales director Jessica Xiao.

The 10-year-old company's transformers are manufactured to UL class B and F, VDE and CE standards at an ISO 9000-certified factory in Shenzhen that covers 35,740 square metres and employs 2,490 workers.

Click's factory is scheduled to become compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) lead-free directive in July. "Our transformers are available in minimum order quantities of 1,000 units delivered 2-4 weeks after order confirmation," Xiao adds.

A similarly wide range of transformers is produced by Ngai Cheong Electronics Ltd, which manufactures switching power supplies/battery chargers, R-Type and toroidal models as well as traditional EI laminations transformers.

Ngai Cheong's low frequency transformers are used in audio products, telephones and personal appliances such as ladies' shavers; high frequency transformers in telecom products, high-end audio, DVD players and LCD monitors; and toriodal transformers in amplifiers.

"An important trend is the increased customer demand for high frequency transformers because of the wide consumer uptake of DVD players and LCD monitors," says assistant marketing manager Nelson Cheng. "We expect this trend to continue in the foreseeable future."

Founded in 1981, Ngai Cheong has an 18,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan capable of producing one million transformers per month to UL, VDE and IEC safety standards. "Our minimum order is 1,000 pieces and delivery times range from 7-21 days after order confirmation," Cheng says.

SMPS in televisions, digital video recorders and personal computers are the primary destinations for the transformers manufactured by PCT Industries Ltd, whose products are also used in battery chargers, power inverters, digital cameras, printers and monitors.

The 21-year-old company's products, which comply with RoHS environmental protection requirements, are manufactured at a 14,000-square-metre facility in Dongguan that is ISO 9001-certified.

"Most of our manufacturing equipment is imported and close communication with our customers ensures compliance with VDE and UL standards," says marketing and development manager Ken Chan.

Techcon Electrical Ltd's strategy, meanwhile, is to focus on high frequency switching transformers for the SMPS used in DVD players, CRT monitors and household appliances.

The 19-year-old company's approach has seen it build an annual turnover of US$10m and a loyal customer base in Europe, Japan and the US.

Demand is met by Techcon's 60,000-square-foot, ISO 9001-certified factory in Zhongshan on the mainland, which has a production capacity of more than one million pieces per month.

"Our concentration on high frequency switching transformers enables us to deliver quality products at very reasonable prices," claims managing director Yu Kon Wing. "We accept minimum orders of 5,000 units delivered 45-50 days after order confirmation."

This complete commitment to customer satisfaction ensures that Hong Kong transformer manufacturers will continue to meet stringent industry demands for many years to come.
